game is awesome. it's not quite Mario Galaxy good, but it's more different than worse. it's NSMB with more directions to move in.

the 3D gimmick is great too. I turned it off because the 3DS hardware sucks with the double image problem, but when it worked, it worked really well. game is totally playable in 2D.

I'm so hyped, but I'll have to wait until Wednesday. Maybe I can finish Dark Souls by then.

Is there any type of MP in this one? Any motion controls, AR cards, or any of those gimmicks?

I've been on a total black out on this one.

Having more fun with this game than I did with Galaxy or NSMB. Real talk. There's no bullshit here; after a several-second cut scene you jump right in and start playing some fuckin' Mario platforming with some clever stage designs. I generally hate having to search for coins, but in this game it's all been a blast to play. So far stage 2-3 is my favorite. Old-school pixel awesomeness.

The game also saves after every level; no needing to clear multiple stages just to log your progress crap here!

only motion control stuff I've seen are for cannons or binocular aiming, and like OoT 3DS, you can just aim with the circle pad. also, when I started it there was a message about streetpass. I don't know what that is so I skipped past it.

Midway through world 3 right now As expected early on in the game it's quite easy (I'm at 30 lives right now), but I'm very much enjoying it. I'm not sure why people were expecting an innovative, epic Mario game like Galaxy. It's a handheld Mario game. They've all been pretty generic affairs. One thing I am very happy about is the lack of bullshit. Very little story and NO tutorials on anything. If only the Zelda team can learn from this.

One thing I also like is the lack of world themes. There doesn't seem to be a world devoted to desert stages or ice stages. Those stages are still there but are mixed in with other level styles to keep it from getting monotonous.

yeah, the game is easy, but every modern Mario game is. I'm on world 6 (with every coin) and have 107 lives. Usually the post-game stuff is more challenging, if this game has it.

It does.

And getting lives is no big deal. You can exploit those Goomba-generating boxes with a raccoon suit and keep stomping them for 1ups.

This sounds like something worth buying a 3DS for... but I havent played Galaxy 2 or NSMB Wii so I'm not really too excited to play it.

I've been really thinking about getting a 3DS with Mario Land, Zelda OOT, Starfox 64, and Samurai Warriors. How well Mario Land turned out will be the deciding factor between owning a 3DS or not. If Mario Kart 7 turns out well, then I'm definitely there.

After playing more, this game is both different and worse than the galaxies by a good bit. There's a whole lot less care put into making everything feel right. Controls feel really stiff, digital (wall jumping feels bad) and the camera is finicky. It's also pretty bland in the same way NSMB is. Ideas are recycled straight from Galaxy 2. Having said that, it's still pretty awesome. If I judged this on its own I'd be more positive, but there's no reason to.

I'm impressed with how efficient they've become at pumping out solid to great 3D Mario games. Galaxy 2 and this are from the same group, right?

That's true. This is the first and only original 3DS game worth a damn (now that Ghost Recon is liberated to iOS).

the main game is pretty short but the post-game content seems as long as the main game.

Anecdote of the day:

Every day I pass by this small video game store on my way to work. I decided to visit it for the first time today, to see if they received 3D Land.

They had a nice selection, and sold every console and handheld out there... Except 3DS software.

I asked the clerk about it and he replied: "What do you mean? These are the games..." *points to DS selection*

I told him that while it's true that the the system runs all these games, it has unique software of its own.

"Oh... You're the first to bring this to my attention. I'll look into it."

Even though a small Store in the middle of India isn't a solid statistical indicator; Good jon, Nintendo.

Just finished the main game up with all coins. Took me about 5:30 hours and was TOTALLY FREAKING AWESOME. Level design was just so much fun. The best bits of Mario and it just felt FAST. Like you'd be speedrunning through every level grabbing the coins. The boss fights were a fun take on the old ones and the final boss fight was super awesome (the bowser fights in the last few games have been really great). And now there's a ton MORE levels with the secret levels! Cool. The 3d was nice though it hurt my eyes to play in 3d for over an hour+ tonight when I was finishing it. Loved some of the uses of it like the level with the clock parts and you go inside the clock with the molemen. Game has a lot of that Mario Galaxy genius in the art and level design.

My only complaint is the momentum is still weird 3d Mario. If I'm at a standstill, making a running jump to a flagtop is always weird and hard to pull off just right. And sometimes it's hard to judge distance like on tightropes. So occasionally I lose a few lives on a part, but since the game gives you like 100+ it's not a big deal and most of the game is very very tightly done.

Otherwise, maybe portable GoTY for me. When I do my GoTY list and look back on 2011 titles, this will definitely be up there since it's about as 5/5 star as they come for a handheld platformer.

I think it's leagues above NSMB DS & Wii. And technically it's a more fun game than Mario Sunshine and Mario 64, though those are much richer experiences imo so I don't think it's necessarily "better".
