I recently played GameDevStory for iPhone since I remember people were saying it was a really good game sim-type game. I played it for a few days and it just made me want to play an old game company sim from several years ago, Gamebiz2. GDS is kind of fun at first when you're strapped for cash and have to make important decisions, but after a few years you get so much money and resources that it's just about doing the same thing over and over again to get bigger numbers, I got bored.
Gamebiz2 is a much better sim of the industry, where you start with a small company and slowly build yourself up. The game is pretty complex and you get control of almost everything related to game development, hiring staff, production, etc. The interface is kind of bland and looks more like a bunch of spreadsheets, but it's really addicting and I spent many nights playing it back in the day. It's also pretty challenging, even if you have good cash reserves you can blow a lot of money on bad projects and end up in the red. Higher difficulty levels raise the stakes by having you worry about competitors courting over your best employees among other things.
After finishing off GDS I decided I wanted to play gamebiz again, so I go to their website and see that they released a 3rd game last year. I know what I'll be doing for the next few nights!
Anyway, check if out! The second game is free and has plenty of content to keep you busy. Anyone who liked GDS but wanted something meatier should enjoy it.
