I never got more than about 2 hours into vanilla Oblivion. After I went mod-crazy about 6 months ago, I was able to play it for about 20 hours before I got bored. I've already put that much time into Skyrim.

My general rule of thumb is don't trust anyone's opinion about any game within the first couple weeks of release.  Gamers are particularly bad for "love you today, who the fuck are you tomorrow", so I like to see how things settle before I take anything into account.

how's that a bad thing? you saying you wouldn't have a love-in phase with a great game, either? or do you prefer a more abusive relationship, ala nights 2

seriously, it's not like any of us boretards aren't acknowledging flaws in these games. are you saying that YOU'D go into playing skyrim looking for flaws -- and if so, wouldn't that make YOU the one getting played? if it doesn't interest you, it doesn't interest you, so don't force yourself onto any bandwagons on OUR account, muchacho

I really have to be in the mood for a massive openworld game like Skyrim (and of course the traditional WRPG lord of the rings art style/setting is a turnoff), so I'm holding back on it till I can get it on sale.

Skryim basically fixes Oblivion's worst flaw: a world that felt kind of bland and samey.

And actual fun quests!

Oblivion had some good quests [Thieves Guild, Dark Brotherhood, and the Daedra princes], but, Skyrim's quests feel like the'yre deeper and more closely integrated into the world.

And the NPCs don't look like deformed mutants.

Oh, I'm as guilty of it as the next person, but NiGHTS 2 should illustrate exactly why it's dangerous to listen to someone in that love-in phase.

oh christ, now you've got sand in your vagina.  okay, let me explain this: some people make recommendations without considering the preferences of the person they are recommending to.  they are most likely to do this when they are in the love-in phase of the game and really want other people to feel the love.  this can lead to some iffy recommendations.

I'm not forcing myself onto any bandwagons here.  I haven't played a single open world game that I liked, so I know I won't like this one.

who's recommending this to *you*? not i, mang. plus if you know it ain't your thang, why "wait a couple weeks"

Quote

So, I wait a couple weeks.  If that somehow bothers you, too fucking bad, butthurt gametard.

I'm being pretty broad in my use of the term "world". It encompasses characters, art, quests, dungeons, cities, ect. Just about everything you see and do in Skyrim is far more interesting than in Oblivion.

I don't think anyone in here is saying "IF YOU DON'T BUY THIS REGARDLESS OF YOUR CAPACITY TO ENJOY LARGE OPEN WORLD GAMES YOU ARE A DOUCHENOZZLE", more along the lines of "MAN THIS GAME IS FUCKING GREAT I LOVE IT"

Granted, trolling bebpo and methodis is fun but yeah other than that not really.

I agree with Oscar about release hype, though I think he's mistaken in regards to some people. I think the folks here are an honest bunch. We realize the games we love often have flaws and we're accepting of this. Despite my love for Skyrim, Saints Row 3 and Portal 2, I've well documented some well grounded complaints towards the games. I don't blame the people who don't believe the Skyrim accolades for being skeptical, because I was when I picked up myself. The only reason I bought the game was because I really REALLY enjoyed Fallout 3 and I was gambling, but I felt in my gut that I would enjoy it, and came away blown away.

So i can't really blame anyone being skeptical towards all the love towards Skyrim, because Bethesda's past reputation has kinda made that a guaranteed thang.

Honestly, I'd rather talk about THQ gimping Saints Row The Third's content in favor of dlc shenanigans.

i was HOPING some jappaweeb or ninthing would get all hot and bothered over the lack of ds games on the list, even though the ds doesn't even really qualify as relevant gaming hardware any more :-(

(although etrian odyssey 3 was good. or at least was a [really] good soundtrack. that was this year, right?)

i can pick at skyrim all day. hell, tvc15 and i nitpicked it for hours at lunch on monday. i might start nitpicking at it here, because it's fun to deconstruct things and discuss what sucks amidst as the occasional fugue of grating positivism. does that mean i now think it's shit? no. i'm no etoilet, and i'm not getting paid. i don't sink 30+ hours (probably a lot more) into a game and then go "well, that was actually shit." even with oblivion, although i think i had some kinda ocd thing goin' on with that game.

I'm not sure if we can blame dlc here though, I could be wrong.

The main issue I take is that many story missions are just side activities. Thankfully, once you get past that part of the game the campaign is better served.

Honestly, I think it's a testament of the game's high quality that the only big issue I have with it (aside from not allowing us to replay missions for co-op fun!) are ALL story-related, but that's mostly the inner Saints fan in me talking and probably isn't really negligible to anyone who hasn't played Saints Row 2.

But I get why other people love it. I love LA Noire. I get why most people on here hate it. No one really gives a shit which is the way it should be.

Well, Radiant Historia I thought was really cool, nice music and battle system... this year was really dry for the DS though.

Man, reading threads like this just makes me really want to get back into videogames. I could sort of justify it now that I work for a game publisher and all, but they take up SO MUCH TIME! somebody needs to invent a way to package games together with the time it takes to play them.

Posted this in another thread but I played a lot of games this year and really enjoyed an unusually high number.

Arkham City
NBA 2k12
Dead Space 2
Portal 2
MW 3
Gears 3
Battlefield 3
Deus Ex
LA Noire
Crysis 2
Bulletstorm

Not all goty contenders but I legit enjoyed large aspects of them all.

And that still leaves Renegade Ops, Witcher 2, Child of Eden, & Saints Row 3 all of which I've barely played or own and haven't played at all. Best year overall for me in awhile.

Probably Dark Souls. Skyrim a very close second, might change my mind and Deus Ex comes real close too. Feel spoilt and a little overwhelmed having back to back fuck awesome RPGs. When I'm done with Skyrim I'm going to start with Deus Ex again then go through Dark Souls, I'll probably just end up grinding out my Skyrim character to 50 and maxing out skills, no point starting a new character unless it's worth going through the Empires questline as well. I find replays of Elder Scrolls games really hard though, they're always amazing the first time through but once the immersion of the setting and story have been removed because I've seen it all already I get bored because of the incredibly average gameplay.

The main thing I like about the bore is that everybody is an opinionated asshole and when it comes down to it everybody likes what they like anyway. I hate Dark Souls. But I get why other people love it. I love LA Noire. I get why most people on here hate it. No one really gives a shit which is the way it should be.

Damn I thought I was the only one!

Nup, I liked it too, even got all the DLC with the season pass. Good game if you play it with a guide and treat it like a movie.

Best I've played this year is Portal 2 with Limbo being right behind. Still have to play Skyword Sword, Rayman and Bastion.
