The N64 would have been completely unbearable were it not for Rare.

Alas, I highly doubt anyone doubts that...or is referring to the N64

Rare has been a worthless addition to MS. Most of their talented artists were gone before the purchase, and as of today they bear no resemblance to the developer that created such games as GoldenEye. In fact, many of their "talented" developers who worked on Grabbed by the Ghoulies are gone.

Viva Pinata utterly failed, and now Rare plans on entering that franchise into the shallow waters of the "kart racer that's not Mario Kart" genre. Good luck with that. People who expect them to magically bounce back by reviving one of their old franchises (IE Killer Instint) need to stop living in a big eyed, gold coin filled fantasty world. They have been left behind, and their current employees seem intent on living in the past to compete with the future. It didn't work for Perfect Dark 0, which could have been great but turned out an absolute joke when you consider the time and money invested into it. It didn't work for Kameo, which was a pretty yet extremely shallow title. It won't work for Banjo Kazooie.

Viva Pinata looks good, but it was on the wrong system. Put it on the Wii, PS2, or PS3 and you have an instant hit.

MS got hosed no doubt about it. They certainly haven't gained anything from that $350 million purchase. PDZ was a bust, Kameo failed, and Viva Pinata flopped HARD.
