Gamestop to actively obfuscate state of used games

Quote
Canada's EB Games, which is part of the US retail giant GameStop, is making plans to remove the distinction between new and used games.

According to internal documents sent to Kotaku by an employee of EB Games, used games will soon be priced with the same white stickers applied to new products.

The source also claimed that, for games where new and used versions are available, EB employees are being instructed to "hide" new copies behind used copies.

Kotaku has approached EB Games for comment, and the story has been corroborated by a separate source within the company.

"We were told that we were to merge all used games with the new games and have them sectioned off by one of four specific genres they gave us," the source said.

"They told us that the new copy must be on the very bottom of the pile and the used ones stacked on top and that we were to change all price stickers to the white ones."

The source said that the price stickers still feature the words "New" or "Used", but suggested that these new measures will make it more difficult for the average customer to tell them apart.

Bastards.

It's just not surprising, it's so underhanded.

I tried to buy Infamous at Gamestop, they only had the used one on the shelf. "Excuse me, do you have any new copies of this?"

"Sure, we do, behind the counter. But it's $3 more."

"That's fine, give me that."

"But it's $3 more! And the used one is guaranteed to work."

"Yeah, I know, I would like the developer to see some of my money."

Why the hell do I have to fight to get a copy of what I want?

Stopped going to brick and mortar stores ages ago. I find the people that work there are often not knowledgeable about games and it annoys me. That and shit like itt has put me off.

The new/used text will probably be in 4pt Sans Serif font a while before they get rid of the distinguisher all together.

Besides the sticker colour thing they do that almost all the time here in Australia. Unless something is in its first 2-3 weeks of sale you can never find it new.

As soon as I found out you could use your Best Buy game trade credit for anything in the store I effectively quit going there. The trade -in prices are usually better, and they run "extra credit" promos all the time, like right now they are running 30% extra if you trade 3 or more (40% if you are a member of their paid gamer club thing). After trading, I paid a grand total of $59.90 for two Kindle Keyboards the other day.  I'll go back to Gamestop every once in a while during a B2G1, but that's about it. For new games, as long as K-Mart keeps pumping out the coupons I'll stick with them.

Same here.  I barely go to Gamestop as is, but now that Best Buy is doing trade-ins, I just go there instead.  The clerks also -surprisingly- don't try to push anything on you there.  Getting an extra $26 just for pre-ordering a $40 game I was going to get the next day was awesome.

I've been thinking about getting a newer small HDTV to replace my current little 19" and may just go there with a shit-ton of games to get it.

they really don't seem to push the used games, either, at least not at the BB near me

all of the used stuff is either in a dump bin or on shelves at the very end of the new games

I bought a "new" copy of Mass Effect at gamestop the other month. It had no manual and had one of their shitty gamestop cases. Yeah, I'm done with gamestop.

i don't get this...didn't you have to pick up that shit case from the rack, bring it over, pay for it, etc.?  It's not like they tricked you.

can't say I hate GS too much.  I always know what I want before I go in and know I'm gonna put up with 5 minutes of pre-order shtick when I pay.  The trick is to browse online to check the store inventory so you don't have to make decisions at the store, cross check it with CAG to see what deals you can get, then cross check it with amazon to see if you can get away with less without leaving the house. They always have enough deals and sales and discounts that I can take good advantage of.

Who the fuck buys new games like that at gamestop? You go to the counter, ask for the game new, and they take it out of the cabinet.

just saying, 99% of "fuck gamestop" posts are the poster's fault somehow.  It's never "they tied me down and forced me to buy it"

Stringer appears to be saying he went to the counter, asked for a new copy and they sold him a used one instead

Yeah, they were like "we have it new, but we don't have a case" and at that point, I couldn't be assed to go to Wal-Mart or some shit just to get a copy of Mass Effect fucking 2 so I bought it. This does not change the fact they are selling new games without cases.

At that point, I'd have answered, "That's funny, because you had a customer, but no sale."

So does this mean there's a chance of someone picking up a $60 game only to realize he to pay for an Online Pass? :lol

No, of course not. It's a used copy so it'll only be $57.99.

Considering how often I found "new" GBA and DS games to have saves when I bought it from Gamestop, I'd say that this policy has been in existence except for name only for at least a decade.

Not to defend GameStop completely, as I do disagree with some of the shit they make us do, but...

Generally speaking, if the game has an online pass, it will be less used.   I.E. Battlefield 3 for 47.99, etc.

GameStop makes more money off used.  Show me a corporation that doesn't promote the thing that makes it money, and I will show you a bankrupt company.

Through GameStop, used product has a better warranty.  If you are the same person that wants to bring back a new game because you "didn't like it" (aka you beat it and it was short), then don't whine to me about not having a copy in shrink wrap.

We've been using white labels at my store for almost a year now.  I always double check with the customer, asking if they wanted it New/Used, just to be sure they're getting exactly what they wanted.

People steal.  If they didn't, I'd be happy to put this shrink wrapped game case on the shelf.  Sadly, this isn't the case.  So yes, to protect our product, we have to remove the game from the case before putting a new game out.  Yes, the game is still new, as it hasn't been played*.  I'm sorry you don't get the fun of taking the plastic off yourself, though if you really want to I will find you a plastic bag for it.

If I wasn't told I would be fired if I didn't promote the PowerUp Rewards card, used product, GPGs, and reserves, I wouldn't fucking bug you with them.  However, since the economy is kind of in the shitter, I'm just doing what is required of me at my job so that I can continue to purchase food to eat, and pay my bills.  I'm sorry if this upsets you.  I try my best to not shove it down your throat.

Yes, unfortunately sometimes cases break in shipping.  While I do apologize that the freight was incorrectly handled somewhere between the warehouse and my store, I'm afraid there isn't magic video game case dust that I can sprinkle on it to make it all better.  All I can do is make a new case, and apologize.  Someone that actually cared for customers, such as myself, would have apologized profusely for this, and offered a discount.  What can I say?  Come to me next time.

No one forces you to shop at GameStop.  Yes, the prices are usually better with used product, so maybe that's why you come there.  No, we aren't infallible or perfect.  I don't think anyone was claiming to be.  But those of us that care, we do our best to help you, the customer.  All I ask is that you don't lump us all together.

We're not supposed to talk about working at GameStop on gaming forums, for whatever reason.  But I don't really care.  I love my job, I do.  There are things that I disagree with, and I try my best to not harass people about them.  But when people come into my store and practically spit in my face when I try to help them, I'm sorry, but I just can't do that anymore.  The majority of us do NOT deserve that.  If you have worked retail, you know how it is.  I do EVERYTHING I can for a customer.  No matter how much of a dick they are to me, I still do my best to try and help them and let them know about the best possible deal.  If that's new, awesome.  If it's used, I'm gonna tell you.  We don't make any commission off of new, used, reserves, whatever.  We make minimum fucking wage, most of the time because it's what we could find.  You know what keeps me going?  The knowledge that some mom that wandered into the store looking for a christmas present for little Johnny actually got quality service because she talked to me, and I knew what she was talking about when she said "that army game that he played so much of".  I helped that person, which doesn't always happen anymore.

That's my piece.

*: Some stores do allow employees to check out new games.  This is the store manager's call.  I completely disagree with it.  I have never done it myself.

I always say the same thing. I get why some people intellectually have some issues with Gamestop policies. I certainly don't like all of them. But from my shopping experience I'm perfectly fine with them. I never have any issues and I've personally gotten some amazing deals from the place and the people who work in them tend to be very friendly to me. I never have these horrible experiences that others always seem to have on forums.
