Going from 1080p to 720p = looks like vaseline on the screen
« on: November 24, 2011, 04:03:43 AM »
So I'm playing Oblivion on my new laptop in 1080p on high with AA and things runs decent (prob on par with 360 version) and I try to fiddle around with settings and turn the resolution down to 720p and now the game looks like somebody smeared vaseline on the screen.

It's as bad as going from 720p to 480p  :-X I checked out Diablo 3 Beta and sure enough same effect going to 720p.

Is this because the screen native rez is 1080? Or because my eyes are now used to gaming in Full HD and HD Ready just doesn't cut it?

Probably this. PC Monitors are such a bitch.

I guess you can hook that laptop to your HDTV, their scalers are much better.

Or perhaps you can try to mess with your GPU (AMD/Nvidia) scaling option? I never messed with them so I have no idea if they will help or not.

Thanks will whine again when I can't play in 1080p.

For nowSkyrim runs good in 1080 and so does Diablo 3.  All that matters :)

1280x720?

I guess not.

The closer to the 1080p(native res) the better.

This kind of rains on the parade of buying a new laptop with a great screen but oh well.

That is normal with any fixed pixel display(almost everything except CRT).There is no way around it.

Try to put your OS resolution to 720p and cry :(

Sigh.

I never knew about this, since I never encountered it before and I did extensive research on which laptop to get.

Anyhoo Diablo 3/Skyrim works in 1080 so I'm safe for the next 3/5 years.

I had my previous desktop hooked up to my 32" telly. Always at 720p.

try playing games in windowed or borderless mode while keeping desktop setting at native res

its like a crazy "ocd must fix feeling" pet peeve of mine when i see people not using native res, even worse when they are aware that it exists and actively ignoring it

basically my pet peeve is old people

I've never really known how big the difference is because I've had a 1080p laptop for 3.5 years, but it has never really able to handle any games at that resolution. So I've been playing games at 1280x800 the entire time on it. :'(

That's pretty wild.
