Was Bandai Entertainment losing money? Also they are 100% independent from Namco-Bandai right?

They're both owned by the large Bandai megacorporation, but considered independent from each other.

One Piece is all about story. That's what separates it from other shounen crap where every fight is just a fight because we need a fight because people like fights. In One Piece, fights are mostly used for plot extension and character development on top of being fights. Comparing One Piece to other shounen is silly sense it has completely different goals; One Piece is a pre-planned story that continuously unwraps as you go through it, other shounen like Naruto or Fairy Tail are made up on the fly to appeal to people who just want action. If you want action, don't read or watch One Piece, though it has action-packed moments, it is not about the fights and never has been.

There will be an interview with the CEO of BEI tomorrow at Anime News Network.

I'm wondering what's going to happen with UC 5 and 6 here? They're released by Bandai Visual (JP)/Honneamise, but BEI distributed them.

I actually kinda of liked Wonderful Days. Of course, I haven't seen it in more than seven years, so I probably just thought the animation was cool or something. And it was an imported DVD, so it had that added element of making me feel like I was watching some amazing, obscure movie. I probably watched the trailer for it at least 20 times.
It was that trailer that I remembered from way back when, and the only reason I picked it up instead of a million more recent things, or much, much older ones. It was pretty impressive, IIRC. Then again, The Lost Boys had a pretty epic trailer, and wasn't very good.

Bandai Entertainment is shutting down. Turn A DVD release canceled.

Time to order the First Gundam collections while I still can.
Wow. I knew the anime boom was winding down, but I didn't think a major player would be taken out. Or is this just corporate restructuring for tax purposes?

ADV Video, THE previous major player, was taken out a few years back. It's nothing new. This is most unfortunate but I think Bandai-Ent could have saved themselves  a bit if they marketed Gundam properly in the past. It's a gold mine for kids and toys and they fucked up.

ADV went away in name only, most of the major players/licences/assets emerged a few minutes later at the newly-minted Sentai Filmworks.

Funimation bought some of their licences in 2008, but everything that was left after that [including licences, production, The Anime Network, and staff] were picked up by Sentai Filmworks and its various arms in 2009:

Once again, the typical disconnect between Japanese corporate expectations and American market reality. Despite the best efforts of Japanese companies to force the American anime market to accept 80$ single DVD/BD releases, such a price point is well out of the range the majority of American fans are willing to pay.

Now, instead of admitting to their own folly, they'd rather close up shop and take their ball home before they lower their prices.

who actually releases anime at reasonable prices!

Man, if they cancel the 2nd half of Star Driver I'm going to be REALLY pissed off.  Don't want to own half a series.  Glad I picked up Xam'd from Rightstuf the other week.

Guess I'm never buying Unicorn unless they sell all Gundam licenses to funimation (which would actually be AWESOME because I'm sure they'd release every gundam in the US at reasonable pricing).

Ok, did some searching and luckily SD vol.2 makes the cutoff of pre-February BV releases.  Crazy they are releasing it so soon after the first half.  Put in a pre-order for it for $30 at Rightstuf and ordered Escaflowne Movie from there since Amazon is sold out.

Grabbed Darker Than Black S2+OAV set from Amazon as well just because I don't trust anime in the US at this point.  The market is going to be gone any day now.  At least I can get Eva 3.33 from HK if Funi tanks.

Funimation recently went private again [breaking away from Navarre] after Gen Fukunaga brought in some rich sugar daddies to put up some big money. No idea what they're profits look like, but they did recently partner with Nico Nico Douga for increased streaming and home video licencing.

The days when almost every show that aired in Japan was available in the US for purchase.

there's a lot of shitty movies out there, doesn't mean they should stop releasing movies.

I don't even understand your argument.  What is the alternative, the current anime market where 95% of shows are never brought over and released in english?  Where the only way to watch anime anymore is to pirate it?

Hulu itself has like 500 billion anime series. Hell, look at funi's online site. Hulu has every localized episode of One Piece for example, and I get to watch One Piece one hour after it airs in Japan, FOR FREE, localized in English, and LEGALLY.

Yeah, all those HD fansubs look great!   ;)

The REAL TRUF here is that I'd buy some anime IF:

1. What I wanted came out here.
2. What I wanted came out here on blu-ray.
3. It was priced decently.

I'm okay with there being less and less stuff that suits me these days.  I got into anime when I was *11*.  I'm 30 now.  I can accept that I'm no longer part of the target audience.  Despite that, some stuff I like still comes out, and there's plenty of great comics out there.  So whatever.

What happens when you can't buy your "top 20 shit" because they don't release it in the US?  And why can't you accept that this is more important than YOU and that some people like to own anime in English.  You are saying the same thing as "why release dvds/blurays of hollywood movies?  I only own a few and don't care if they went netflix streaming only".

There's a reason why people prefer to watch something on a bluray than watching it on netflix streaming or hulu plus.  Quality is still way better on a disc.

As am I.

@Beb Fansubs are usually in HD+ resolutions so the quality is there. I kinda hate dubs anyway so this is not affecting me in the least. I have media devices capable of playing euro and jpn content so nothing is lost for me. Jizz media and UnFunimation and the like have always annoyed me with their premium markups so I usually just get it from JPN stores when I buy.
