I don't find Grave of the Fireflies that depressing. I mean, it's a sad story but...
It just made me angry, and when that went away I laughed at the absurd choices Seita makes. Seita is pretty much a stubborn dick.

You laughed at Grave of the Fireflies?

I don't think I could take any of your recommendations then! The movie broke my heart so bad there's still a scar!
The problem for me is I never identified nor felt a connection to Seita, he just made me angry.

You keep bringing up depressing and wah wah, but like Spencer said, sometimes nothing tops a good downer story. I don't understand why people gravitate towards happy feelings all the time. A good story is a good story, and Now and Then, Here and There is leaps and bounds above most common anime due to its realistic approach to drama and the subject matter it entails.

Nothing against depressing, though I'm not really one for rewatching such shows/movies, but Spencer did specifically say he wanted lighter fare which Now and Then, Here and There is decidedly not. You've definitely got to be in the right mood for it.

Making Setsuko live in a hole in the wall and eat shit/nothing when he had the means to feed her properly. He should have had her checked out earlier, he should have got the money/food earlier.  surely you notice your little sister turning into a no energy zombie and wasting away into a skeletal figure? Instead of going gung ho with the food at the end he could have at least given her a fruit or two a day with the money they had and supplement that with fish he catches. Instead he basically ignores it till its too late

The guys that did Time of Eve have another project in the works:

Quote
The official website for Purple Cow Studio Japan's Sakasama no Patema (Patema Inverted) revealed details about the anime film's plot and main character on Tuesday. Time of Eve creator Yasuhiro Yoshiura is writing and directing the anime film for release throughout Japan this year.

The story will take place in an underground world where tunnels extend everywhere. Even though they live in dark and confined spaces, people wear protective clothes and lead quiet and enjoyable lives. Patema, a princess in her underground village, loves to explore the tunnels. Her favorite place is a "danger zone" that her village prohibits people from entering. Even though she's scolded, Patema's curiosity can't be held back. No one ever explained what the supposed danger was. On her usual trip to the "danger zone," Patema faces unexpected events. When hidden secrets come to light, the story begins to unfold.

Yoshiura previously wrote "This new animation is … a story about girl-meets-boy, and boy-meets-girl. It is an extremely righteous, but also extremely strange, story."

Moretsu Pirates is SO GOOD. It's not moving at some whiz-bang pace or anything, nor does it feel like it's just twiddling its thumb with meaningless stuff, but it's keeping things a bit slow to build up the characters that will be important for the rest of the 26 episode run. It's also got a nice balance between being light-hearted at its core and also having little dramatic moments to deepen the characters. It's a modern big-budget series injected with the soul of anime at its height.

Here's some good news for magus:

Quote
The North American publisher Digital Manga is raising funds through the Kickstarter website to publish Osamu Tezuka's Barbara manga in English. Digital Manga gave the following description of the story:

Barbara opens with famous author Yosuke Mikura wandering the packed tunnels of Shinjuku Station, where he makes a strange discovery: a drunk woman, her rags caked in mud, who can quote French poetry. Her name is Barbara. He takes her home for a bath and a drink, and before long Barbara has made herself into Mikura's shadow, saving him from egotistical delusions and jealous enemies. But just as Mikura is no saint, Barbara is no benevolent guardian angel, and Mikura grows obsessed with discovering her secrets, tangling with thugs, sadists, magical curses and mythical beings - all the while wondering whether he himself is still sane.

Digital Manga aims to release the manga in large paperback format (5 7/8" x 8 1/4") if it receives US$6,500 in funds by February 12. As of Saturday, it received over US$5,000. Contributors will receive various rewards, depending on the level of their pledge.

i knew about the game but i had no idea it was a tezuka manga originaly

and uh... it was a little disappointing, the main character goes slaying a bunch of demons and all it's cool, story happens, then *BUM* the ending come without any sort of advise and is totaly anti-climatic and goes... "and then he went searching for the remaining demons"... i heard the other versions have a proper ending? how does it end?

i've readed a bit of it and i just didn't feel it... but i might finish it later
besides while i like the guy,he seems fixated with the theme of discrimination and racism (astro boy = everybody hates robots, black jack = everybody hates blackjack scarred face) so in that regard picking a manga about nazism seems like overkill

@GR The movie has a bit of a darker tone and features a dude in black as I recall. I recall it being good but cant remember too many details.

It was okay, but 3/4 of the movie was just getting the gang back together. Once that happened, it was basically over. Ultimately disappointing and pointless, still not a bad movie though.

Aria the Natural

I'm watching this again because I got the DVD sets for Christmas, but I could probably watch it a dozen times and not get tired of it. What Aria does really, really well is to immerse the view in a wonderfully realized and idealized world. No other anime I can think of does this so well. And that soundtrack [those acoustic guitars = love], easily one of the best. I like the second the season the most because it had a lot of episodes that dealt with the more supernatural side of the world [especially with Cait Sith].

I watched the 2 movies ages ago when they aired on the Scifi Channel. They're really great examples of late 70's/early 80's Japanese scifi, they've got that whole world-hopping adventure through a strange galaxy going on. And they're both directed by Rintaro, so plenty of weirdness going on. I'm definitely interested in watching the series.
