Naruto was cute again.  It's sort of like Eureka Seven except instead of Naruto kicking ass with the power of LOVE from an alien girl, it's from the power of LOVE from a giant fox inside him.  Hokage final form Naruto is pretty boss looking.  Guess manga is really ending soon since I don't see any further forms left for him.

Hunter x Hunter was really good again.  This arc has been pretty solid and all the boring political talk finally makes sense as he was using it as a counter to the exciting violent storyline going on in the other story.  It's good to see Togashi back as an interesting manga writer again.  After Greed Island which was just ok and Ant arc which sucked, I thought HxH was done for, but this arc gives me hope it might pull itself back together much like Togashi's health.

At least it's not a total fuck up like the E7 movie was.  Escaflowne movie definitely has things going for it like the animation and music.  Story is rushed and weird and maybe passable.  Characters are rushed and weird and underdeveloped.  It's very watchable.  I need to re-watch it on BD.

Movie is way tamer than the book and especially manga.  There're only really hints at sexual stuff in the movie.  I read the manga a while back, and I could be mistaking it for another manga, but there was fingering bullet holes and shit like that.

Movie changes a lot of details because it's too much story for the run time.  Kiriyama is a totally different character.  Aforementioned sex stuff is barely mentioned.  Kitano.  In a lot of ways its better than the manga for it.

You guys all NEED to watch Thermae Romae.  This show is hilarious in a comic strip way I haven't seen since Cromartie.  The art and comedy sort of reminds me of Slam Dunk style.  The first ep is just alright, but after that each ep is hilarious.  And the episodes are only 13mins!  Sad that it's only 6eps long.  Hope it gets another season down the line.  It's great stuff.  I saw on wikipedia that the manga it's based on won some awards for best short story manga and I can see why.  The premise is so outrageous and the execution is fantastic.

Plus the show has ZERO creepy animu crap and is actually educational as it teaches you about both Roman history and how modern bathing technology works.

Nisemonogatari ep2 - Show continues to be disappointing beyond all words.  Not only is it disappointing when compared to the incredible timeless anime classic show that was Bakemonogatari, but it's not even an entertaining show standing on its own.  It's just boring.

Apparently, when the staff had no money it forced them to be creative and put together the show in stylish Evangelion style dramatic still usage and creative animation techniques.  But now that they have money it's just non-stylish and bland with lots of animation frames :|  Plus I haaaate the character designs in this.  Everyone looks terrible and nothing like they are supposed too.  Especially araragi who looked cool in Bakemonogatari and now he looks like bad art guy.  The editing and dialogue and scripts feel much slower and less clever.  Huge lack of puns and sharp jokes.  And the music is so much worse as well.

Nisemonogatari lacks the charm of the original.  Almost every aspect of the original had a certain charm to it.  Even the next ep previews with his sisters waking him up in SD form were charming.  There's nothing like that in this show.

The show feels like if they gave it to someone other studio and said "hey, make the sequel imitating the style of bakemonogatari".  Just feels like a cheap imitation.  Have no faith that I will enjoy this show.  Reaaaaaaally hoping the movie is more like Bakemonogatari.  Otherwise I'll just go and rewatch Bakemonogatari, which is what I feel like doing now after watching this poor imitation.

I mean just compare this scene in bakemonogatari which is hilarious and clever in all its references to anime/manga/pop culture even without understanding the dialogue (which is clever as well).  Really tight editing/directing:

Then they try to remake the scene in nisemongatari with a bigger budget and all its soul is lost and it's just boring:

Plus in Bakemonogatari when they actually put money into episodes we got cool looking animation like this:

Went back and watched some bakemonogatari again.  Still so good.  Show never gets old.  Wish there were more dialogue exchange clips on youtube as the dialogue exchanges are the best parts of the show.  There's an exchange in Ep3 with Arraragi and Senjougahara where they are hanging out in a park and she's offering him favors and it's just amaaaaazingly well written comedy that keeps upping the ante.  Every ep has lots of "spit your drink" moments.

Haha, I expected that reaction from you :P

The thing about Bakemonogatari is it's really not as perverted harem show as it seems on a casual glance.  The show doesn't pander or emphasize or glorify sexual fetishes, it just uses them as humor.  I think a western comparison is Archer which is extremely vulgar in sex jokes and stuff, but it's using them as exactly that, jokes.  Not pandering in a sexual way.  Just cultural differences where in the west we make jokes about jerking off and bjs and in the east they make jokes about lolicon and siscon and sorocon.

I actually knew you'd post that too.  I'm on top of everyone's take on Bakemonogatari here :P

It's definitely not for everyone.  It's not an action show, or much of a story show.  It's an entirely dialogue-based character show.  Like a stage play set in 1 room with 2 characters.  You have to like that sort of thing.

siscon is just the oniichan thing of lolicon with a little sister that you see in a million anime and it's always creepy.

sorocon is something I think the bakemonogatari author made up based on this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_marriage#Sororate_marriage.  The dialogue is something like:

[A = guy, B = girl]

B: You always dote on your sisters, could you possibly be a siscon, perhaps?
A: No, falling in love with your sister...it's just a fantasy by those who don't have sisters.
B: Fine, you're not a sis-con.  So you won't fall in love with your sister?
A: How could I!
B: That's right.  You seem more like a Soro-con
A: Soro-con?
B: The abbreviation for sororate marriage, also known as inter-marriage inclusive of all sisters.  It means marrying the older or younger sister of your wife whose passed away.
A: And why am I soro-con?
B: In your case, you'll most likely marry the younger one rather than the older one.  You'll get your wife's younger sister to call you "oniichan" and then you'll kill your wife and marry her younger sister and still have her call you "oniichan" afterwards.  Thus you can love your sister without loving your sister.
A: Now you're saying I'll kill my wife??
B: Well, because you're a soro-con.
A: I'd rather be a sis-con than a soro-con in that case!
B: I thought you said you wouldn't fall in love with your sister?  Then will you fall in love with a lover who is not blood related?
A: Like I said...!!!  Huh?  I lover who is not blood-related?
B: Haha, you're so easy to tease.  Small jokes get you so riled up.
A: These aren't small jokes!
B: I was just testing you now.
A: Why am I being tested?  You mean you're not even going at me with everything you've got?
B: To use my full potential I would have to transform (henshin)
A: YOU CAN TRANSFORM!?  Wow!  I'd really want to see that! [sarcasm]
B: You make such huge reactions to everything, but you're always so petty.  Still, regardless of how petty you are, I will never abandon you.  I will cope with you and your pettiness until the bitter end.
A: Deep.
B: So, besides your pettiness, is there anything else I can help you with?

Obviously some of the dialogue rolls are lost in translation but the entire show is like 200 of those conversations non-stop with excellent directing and acting to pull them off in a fiendishly clever way.  It's why Bakemonogatari is one of my favorite anime.

You are clearly underestimating the ability of manga/anime publishers to stretch things far past the point of viability.

yeah, pretty much.

The one thing is that Naruto seemingly has his final upgrade, or at least the one that's been teased since the beginning of the series.  But this is the same magazine that hosted Dragon Ball aka SUPER SAIYAN 3 what the fuck.  Naruto's current final boss has more or less been pulled out of thin air.  Ignoring him, there are two other major bad guys running around.  There's a lot more milking to be done.

That argument makes sense if Naruto is as popular as Dragon Ball was. But it isn't. Toriyama was forced to stretch his story by publishers. I highly doubt publishers would give a shit if Naruto ended any time soon, not to mention, Naruto has lasted longer than Dragonball's Shounen Jump run. Dragon Ball lasted in Jump for 9 years and Toriyama wanted to end the series after Freiza. Naruto has been in jump for 11 years, comparatively.

It was the second-best selling manga from last year, sold 6.8 million units. That's pretty popular.

Not Dragon Ball popular. Why would a publisher want to draw out Naruto with sales like that? It has lasted 11 years. That's a long time. If Naruto is over soon, I doubt jump executives will give a fuck, especially since Toriko is rising up the charts, which is relatively fresh.

Naruto is ending with this arc.  There will be a sasuke epilogue, but that's about it.  Orocihmaru guy is going to die this arc.
