Currently watching Space Dandy season 2. It's a fun series but it is really uneven : the art and animation are often sub par, the tone is all over the place, the characters are one dimensional. Really disappointing coming from Watanabe.
Also the fuck with how long the opening credits are ? Are Bones padding this shit to save some money ?
What episodes had substandard art and animation? I recall a number of them that looked as good as anything that's aired in recent memory. The fish episode in particular was some sublime shit.
There's some very lazy / outright shit models in the zombie episode for instance (mercenary team getting killed in the hospital, look at the zombies) and also in the robot uprising one. Not the only instances, there's some too in the second episode. I'm less specific with the animation but I was never too impressed with it. The high school musical episode for instance, that rely on his musical numbers, left me very cold in this regard. If by the fish episode you mean the one with the giant eel and the old fisherman, yeah the art was good in that one (pace not so good). That said, I am not an avid watcher watcher in current anime so in that context Space Dandy might shine compared to its peers (My impression is that the technical standard for good shows has declined, or that I have trouble coping with the computer assisted look).
I understand that it's an exercice of style but it really falls flat often. Bebop and Champloo were already somewhat of a simple plot redline to accomodate brutal tone shifts, I don't think it works well here.
The music is good for the most part however.
