Ipad 2 or 3?
« on: November 29, 2011, 09:58:02 PM »
Thinking about getting an ipad but not sure if I should just wait until the next model. For those that have the ipad 2 do you love it so much you recommend it without hesitation or would you wait for the next revision in hindsight?

i have 1, skipped 2 but gasping for 3. It needs a resolution/screen upgrade pretty bad now, IMHO. I prefer reading a lot of things on the iPhone vs iPad now.

I play with my sis' Ipod 2 and it's pretty nice already.  OTOH, Apple's probably gonna release the 3 pretty soon.  So either wait or get a used I2 for cheap.

does anyone even use their ipad on a regular basis? other than when i'm traveling and the nights i can't sleep, it see's very little to no use. than again i'm not the type who walks around with headphones needing a soundtrack to accompany my every move  nor even have a smart phone so i can check facebook and make twitter updates.

i'll be hoarding my ipad1 for a long time.

3.  Resolution bump will be sexy, especially for reading.  Anti-aliased fonts FTW.

This is kind of a toughie as the question is largely dependent on what updates the iPad 3 will actually see. If the iPad 3 is just a minor spec bump plus Siri à la the 4S then sure go and buy a 2 now. But if it ends up with a major performance increase and quadrupled resolution I'd say you'd probably want to wait. Personally I'd wait unless you a have a serious need for an iPad within the next couple of months.

Wait for 3.  3 is going to be fundamentally different.  I really love my iPad but getting a 2 right now doesn't make sense IMO.

And by all indications it will have retina display which will be gorgeous.   :heartbeat

Ditto. Basically everyone I know with a tablet it has replaced almost all PC/Laptop use outside of work. Laying down on a couch or bed and browing the internet on a tablet is way way way more relaxing than sitting at a desk or hoding a laptop. The only drawback is typing but I got a keyboard docking station for that. I have little to no use for my home laptop anymore. I am starting to think I don't need a home computer anymore, I have my work laptop for work and tablet for all personal use.

Thanks for the advice. I don't really have a burning need for the device or anything. I just kinda want one. But I'll probably end up waiting for the 3.

Maybe I'll get a kindle fire or something in the mean time if I must have one or something.

I want an iPad 2 for Christmas.  The iPad 3 will most certainly be a big upgrade, of course (mostly screen rez and memory – I can't seem them improving much else hardware wise), and it won't be long before it comes out, but I'd like one for my internship and for school – I wanna chuck all my textbooks on there.

it's not like the iPad 3 will be the last one ever made. Getting a 2 now just secures your place in line for an iPad 4 in another year or so. I've used a 2 and it's awesome - light and fast. Much better than 1, probably not as nice as 3.

Yeah ignore my waffling. It's just my nature.

If I got one now I'd be lamenting all the time that I should have waited. And if I did wait, I couldn't stop myself from everyday reading about cool stuff and apps I could be playing on 2. That's just the way I am. I'm one of those lame people who's never happy about the decisions I make and is always second guessing it.   :-\

I'm leaning towards just getting one now and then selling it and putting it towards 3 if I really think its some big leap or something.

Just wait...if not for the iPad 3, then for an official announcement/unveiling and compare it to the iPad 2.

I still find no reason to bother with an iPad when I have an iPhone.  Yes, the larger screen would be nice for comic reading, but that's not anywhere near enough of a reason for me to bother with one.

I like my iphone but the screen is just too small to be enjoyable with games or video. I use to be very anti the notion of an ipad until I used a friends and really liked it. I still debate between an ipad and just getting a better laptop but they kinda serve different purposes for me at this point.

It's hard to explain until you have one. I thought the same way since I had a iPhone but its become essential. The larger screen helps it act is much better for web browsing (tabbed browsing alone does wonders). Watching videos as well. Gaming is way better on the bigger screen too I think.

I use it mainly for facebook/web/games/streaming video/comics- have a nook touch for book readin'. I like having a tablet because guess what- dont need to use the PC for everything- dont need to leave a laptop lying around. Yes I could use my phone, but for how long- id rather keep that charged for what I REALLY need it for, work mail? On the other hand the battery life on an ipad is NUTS.

Transformer Prime looks sick and I really like that your able to dock it to a keyboard that is also an external battery. With that said, the supposed resolution bump in the iPad3 sounds like its going to leapfrog the Prime. Either way, it sounds like either is "good enough" for browsing the internet and media.

I mocked the iPad. Laughed at the friends that purchased one. Then I picked one up (maybe while drunk) and I learned that I fucking LOVE having an iPad. I'm sure you do. I just can't bring myself to spend a large chunk of money on anything without thinking I'm getting the most out of my money or that I truly "need" it. I make up for this by blowing small amounts of money frequently.

It's really cool. I mean if you have a decent laptop some of the feature set is redundant but it's a great sit on the couch/toilet/bed device. It also replaces what tiny interest I had left in getting a portable gaming device.

It's a fair bit faster, lighter/thinner, front facing camera which also allows for auto brightness which solves the reading in the dark issue. The difference in weight is significant IMO, worth hitting a store and giving it a lift.

Other than that not much else. 3G is handled through Verizon instead of AT&T like the 1st gen iPad

Gaming on ipad is something that I am suprised how well has taken off. Early ios games were just bad bland flash game rip offs or cheap console ports using on screen d-pads. If you know what games to find through the endless titles (look at sites like TouchArcade.com) it's a nice little portable gaming device.

A lot the games on it fill the GameBoy void that went away when Nintendo & Sony portables basically became mini verisions of their current gen consoles.

I was a fairly early proponent of iOS gaming back in the day on gaf. One of the problems that the iPad solves is simply screen real estate. My fingers were too fat and either blocked the screen or made touching the screen more complicated because of the size on the iPhone/Itouch.

Get the 2 now. NO reason to hold back until the 3 that isn't even announced yet. And if the 3 comes out in a year, you'll be able to sell the 2 for about $100 less than you bought it for.
I don't see the 3 being as huge a spec bump like it was going from the 1 to 2.

I think everyone is assuming the screen will get a massive upgrade since apparently Apple has switched getting their displays for the iPad 3 to Sharp. And it wouldn't make sense to waste the money to start over with a brand new partner to build the iPad displaysif there wasn't some sort of large change the old producer was not able to handle/meet demand for. We will know pretty soon either way what changes there will be. It'll probably be out in March.

I am curious to see what effect the Kindle Fire has on how much Apple puts into upgrading iPad. Android tablets for the most part have had very little marketshare. Kindle Fire is low end but it is the first competitor to iPad to really get any attention.

If the iPad 3 doesn't have a HD "retina" display then it'll be a gigantic fuck up by Apple.  That just has to happen.
I would be completely shocked if they didn't. All their devices have something new that is easily noticable that they can market in commericals other than a simple spec upgrade. iPhone 4S had Siri, iPad 2 had cameras. iPad 3 kind of needs it.

iPad 3 will obviously have a spec upgrade and Siri but that isn't enough. I can't imagine them being stupid enough to not have retina display, and with all the endless rumors pointing to it having one. It'd be such a stupid mistake to not do it.

I wonder if they will increase from 64GB as the highest storage space to 128GB. With games  (and other apps) on iOS growng to be way more complex and taking up way more space due to this I would think it would go without saying they will have to go beyond 64GB at some point.
