So far I am enjoying my iPad 2. I feel a little silly that I'm mainly using it for this site so far.  :-\

Shoulda went with our proprietary model, although I find the borePad's touch screen a bit too grabby for my liking.

Looks like iPad 3 with retina display might be released in just two months this Feb.

http://9to5mac.com/2011/12/08/citi-next-gen-ipad-to-launch-in-february-with-retina-display/

Really really hope the retina display part comes true or there is no chance I will upgrade. But I can't see them not including it.

It did. Everyone was just pissed it had the same design as the iPhone 4. 4S was the iPhone 5. It just didn't meet every wish/rumor people wanted from it.

There will be a  new iPad early next qtr. There always is and they are already in production. But what exactly will be in it who knows. I won't believe the retina stuff until anything is annouced.

I'm just using that as an example to doubt the retina display, since everyone seems to assume it's happening.

Oh yeah I agree completely. Everyone wants it so people of course will claim rumors it is coming. I am iffy on it till they actually annouce it. They could easily just do a iPad 3 that is simply iPad 2 + better specs + better battery + better camera + Siri like 4S was to the 4.

The camera on iPad 2 is terrible.

There was word of a 4 inch iPhone screen, also it was supposed to come out n June, then July then August, then September. There was also supposed to be an iPad 2s or 3 before Christmas.

We shall see

So I just read a rumour that The 3 will have res. about 2k x 1.5k and 4-core CPU. Pretty fucking impressive if true. I just hope they do not bump the price up :(
I would be shocked if they would. They don't bump the price up as they upgrade the "i" line as far as I remember. Especially with the competition from the $200 low-end tablets.

The big money comes from the App store anyway.

Actually, I think there is a market out there for an even larger tablet, say somewhere between 13-15".  It would certainly make magazines, art "books" and comics look gorgeous, and give multiplayer board-style games some needed extra screen real estate. Not as portable, to be sure, but I think there's room for a home-oriented tablet.

That 7" Asus tablet (Memo) looks pretty sick. Tegra 3, 1GB RAM, 16GB storage for $250. I think these specs are at the sweet spot for media consumption and web browsing. Any more and you start talking about needing the extra power for games and apps for content creation.

Yeah something like that or kindle fire is great for media consumption. iPad 3 (or one of those really high end windows 8 and androids tablets at CES) if you get a blue tooth keyboard are basically a laptop computer.

And I'm that market! It's one of the main reasons why I'm keen on the Lenovo Yoga, or a similar form factor. Basically a combo tablet/Ultrabook. Nowhere near as convenient as the iPad but looks like it would be awesome for work and entertainment at home....even comes with its own stand.

I really like the idea of the high end Windows 8 tablets but it's really MS's first OS where they are emphasizing tablets equally alongside desktops and laptops so I dont expect it to match iOS. I bet there will be some really wonky stuff about it in usage due to that. A few iterations later I can see myself considering it.

i'd be happy with a larger screen android tablet at a decent res and acceptable specs, doesn't have to be all superrezzzz like everything else seems to be this year

People are definitely catching on to the potential for board games.

My favorite IOS game is Ticket to Ride and it works so freaking well. I'd love to see so many more boardgames on these style devices.

For what its worth I love my Ipad. I use it far more than I ever thought I would. I'm one of those dudes who always regrets his purchases but I have no regrets about that thing.

I'm not opposed to tablets, it's just that I think the technology needs to advance a couple of more years before they're worth it to me.  I might have some money but I am a tightass and the iPad just doesn't seem like a good value at this point.

Hell, the iPhone 4S is my first foray into smartphones.  I'd just prefer the kinks to get worked out.  I'm glad early adopters are taking that plunge though.

I guess if I was looking at the iPad feature set objectively I would say that it is still not great value compared to a laptop for the same price or whatever. But that is only a small part of it. It's a fantastically capable and adaptable device that's a joy to use. It scratches an itch you didn't know you had!

Tablets are the perfect bed, couch, and toilet devices for me.

100% of my iPad use is for audiobooks, surfing the internet, streaming video from my desktop or Netflix, and playing games. That's all stuff a laptop can do but it feels so much more convenient on my iPad. Hard to explain unless you do the same.

I don't have a commute anymore - the iPad is still in use for hours every day (either by me or my daughter).

It can't be overemphasized how great they are for kids. You don't want to give a kid your laptop just to watch Toy Story on, but I know that she won't be able to do serious damage to the iPad and she can operate it herself thanks to the touch controls. It's gonna be a lifesaver on our next trip to the UK.

I enjoy my HP Touchpad because it does what I like (namely read comics and PDFs in a way that's more comfortable than my desktop) but I would love something a bit larger with higher resolution.  I will probably pony up for an Ipad 3 if the resolution is to be believed.  I really want some of that sweet sweet ios boardgame action as well.

Thing is if one was going to get iPad 3 due to the games a Windows 8 tablet wouldn't make too much sense. It'll have to gain a pretty sizable chunk of market share and even then it'd still take quite a while for it to catch up to Apple's wide lead in tablet games. Even Android after all this time is rather far behind in that area in smart phone gaming, it basically has the big titles but all the smaller niche stuff is still a no go.

Windows 8 is going to do a lot of great stuff, stuff better than Apple's iOS. Particularly Office work due to being able to switch at any time to a traditional desktop setup (Which is a pain in the ass to do on iOS. Apple really needs to add some sort of document folder system in iOS). I suspect it will  have all the cut the rope, angry birds nonsense but not the weird awesome more unknown titles.

I do wonder if Windows 8 will be able to compete with Apple in the Tablet space. Android unlike on smartphones has been a complete dud in tablets.

If I had infinite money I'd want a Windows 8 tablet in addition to an iPad (the Yoga probably  :heartbeat) for the hell of it since it looks like a fun OS but I am way too invested in the App Store to make a switch cold turkey like that.

I love my Ipad 2 but I've tried to keep my machine in tip top shape along with all the boxes in great condition so I can sell it for the 3.

Quote
Apple’s not holding an event in February — strange, unusual or otherwise. But it is holding one in March — to launch its next iPad.
Sources say the company has chosen the first week in March to debut the successor to the iPad 2, and will do so at one of its trademark special events. The event will be held in San Francisco, presumably at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Apple’s preferred location for big announcements like these.
No word yet on a street date for the iPad 3 (assuming that’s what it’s called), though my guess is retail availability will follow roughly the same schedule as that of the iPad 2: Available for purchase a week or so after the event.
As for the next-generation iPad itself, sources say it will be pretty much what we’ve been led to expect by the innumerable reports leading up to its release: A device similar in form factor to the iPad 2, but running a much faster chip, sporting an improved graphics processing unit, and featuring a 2048×1536 Retina Display — or something close to it.
If 2011 was the year of the iPad 2, will 2012 be the year of the iPad 3? Said a source familiar with the device: “What do you think?”
An Apple spokeswoman declined comment on the timing of the event, saying the company does not comment on rumors and speculation.

According to sources who have been reliable in the past, Apple currently plans to hold their iPad 3 announcement on Wednesday, March 7, 2012. Along with the 2048×1536 Retina display, the iPad 3 will feature a quad-core Apple 6 system-on-a-chip, and possibly 4G LTE networking.

The March 7 date fits with what AllThingsD reported last week, about the next iPad event being scheduled for the first week of March, and Wednesday is a traditional day for Apple to hold these types of events.

Whether Apple would simply improve and optimize the current dual-core ARM Cortex A9 processor found in the Apple A5 SoC, or go quad-core has been a lingering question, with 9to5Mac finding code references to quad-core but The Verge hearing otherwise. However, it sounds like they’re going quad-core.

4G LTE networking has been another mystery surrounding the iPad 3, with a compatible Qualcomm chipset becoming available, but international LTE coverage is still slim, and in some cases a year or more away. It sounds like Apple has 4G LTE lined up for iPhone 5 this October, but we’re still not certain if the iPad 3 will get it earlier. Verizon is going to want iOS devices that go faster than 2-3mbps, of course, especially with AT&T offering HSPA 14.4, and potentially faster, models. Apple could release a 4G LTE variant model, targeted at Verizon, AT&T, Rogers, Bell, and other carriers that have rolled out enough support to see demand, or they could wait and debut it in the next iPhone instead. (No doubt Apple has already decided, it just isn’t clear to us which way they went for the iPad 3.)

Other rumors from iLounge have included better cameras, either a 5 or 8 megapixel rear camera and a FaceTime HD front camera. We haven’t received any information on these, though any camera Apple includes will have to fit into the thin iPad 3 casing. Likewise, they’re probably going to want to keep component costs down low enough to maintain their $499 entry level price tag. (Even if Apple decides to keep iPad 2 around, with a low end, low storage offering at $399.)

Again, these are rumors, and an extract of a lot of information we’re still trying to properly sort, but we’ll update when and as needed to clarify and correct. Either way, we’ll only know for certain when Apple executives take the stage next month to officially announce the iPad 3.
