Help me with picking out my DSL service......
« on: January 03, 2007, 10:05:51 AM »
Just moved into a new house, and unfortunately there is NO cable service in the area at this time, and i'm being told to not hold my breath.  Stupid fucking town and there stupid fucking agreements with companies.  ::)

So, i'm pretty much forced to go the DSL route, and i've never done it before.  I'm basically ready to sign up with AT&T, and their Yahoo DSL service.  I generally just do your regular web browsing, and console online gaming.

So, i'm wondering if 1.5 download, and 768 upload are good enough, are should I pay the extra for 3.0 download, and 768 upload?

Thanks. :)

Finally decided to pay for internet, good for you :)

If you have speakeasy, go with it, they were kickass for me, and they have good service.

You won't lag, but I think other people may if you're the host and it's 16 players.

Oh yeah, in the craziness of the past 2 weeks moving, and the holidays, I had forgotten I started that thread about stealing my neighbors WiFi.  :lol

Honestly, my reason for now paying for DSL is too fold.  (1) My neighbor's WiFi is suddenly dead.  The router signal is still there, and it's wide open, but the actual internet service seems to be dead.  Weird, but maybe they didn't pay the bill or something.  (2) The free WiFi was only usable in part of the house, and my consoles were in the unavailable part of the hosue, so if I want to play my games online, I have to pay for my own service.

Help me understand this.  I've been told before that hosting relies heavily on your upload speed, and 768 is a good upload, right?  Does the download really matter when it comes to gaming?

Gaming depends on latency when you arent hosting.

As for DSL, its FINE for gaming. Im on a DSL service thats 30 a month at 1.5 downstream capped and my ping is fine. Plus its a whole lot more dependable than cable. Never go cable if you live near a school, or you am fucked.

I live on the same street as a school, no more than 1000ft away and my Cable is rock solid.

Oh god, get this shit.

I just got off the phone with the phone company.  I'm basically going through the motions getting my new phone line set up, and then i'd add the DSL to it.  The guy does a check on my info, and says I owe them $44 from 6 years ago.  :lol  I tell him i'm not paying that shit, and he says he can't set up my new line until I do.

What a crock of shit.  I haven't had a land line for years now, as i've got a great cell phone plan.  Now i'm stuck either paying this old bill they claim I owe, or not having DSL.  What's even funnier is that they claim I owe them this money, but it's never shown up on a credit report, and i've bought 2 homes, and 2 new cars in the past 5 years.  ::)
