Avatar is not a good movie.  It's pretty to look at and has cool action sequences, but as a film it's marginally better than unpolished cinema turds like, say, Speed Racer.

I've never seen Tron, but I saw Tron Legacy and I don't know what the fuck.

Which is probably why I like Avatar so much. I mean, you've got the Transformers, the GI Joes, the Tron Legacy's and what have you, all of these fucking big budget movies that are crap. At least Avatar is half way decent.

I thought at the very least it was a very competently made movie. Unlike many movies I've seen lately, the dialogue didn't make my eyes roll right out of their head nor did I hate the characters -- in fact I liked all of them. Even Clu was somewhat sympathetic, this scene is awesome cause it shows how human he is. Heck I even loved that weird bald dude. A character that could have just been a bland stand-in is given life and character.

I never got the impression anything was underdeveloped, or made me question the plot, or made me hate the characters. That's the baseline for a "good" movie so I don't get why it's hated on.

I do have complaints; the biggest I can muster is that it didn't have enough emotional resonance, but it was still there. The black and white dream skipping stones, "Goodbye kiddo." They should have played that up. People harp on the solar sailor part but I thought it was pretty crucial. Oh and obviously young Bridges CG was bad but that's no reason to hate the movie.

But I love the movie overall.

it's not that avatar doesn't have a story, it's that it's one of the most antiquated and overused stories in Hollywood showcasing some of the western worlds most banal representations of imperialism.  To me it's no better than Crash in terms of how blah and inconsequential it's message is.  It would have been so much better without a story!  If it were just 2 hours of visual art and fight sequences with no plot whatsoever it would be awesome as hell.

I saw Avatar in theaters twice.  I enjoyed it for the spectacle, though the second time the slower bits lulled me to sleep.  Great action padded by dullness.  Watched a bit of it on hbo not too long ago and still mildly enjoyed it, but not enough to watch the whole thing.  For its long run time there's not a lot of interesting stuff happening.  And I don't like the 'heroes'.  The natives are vain and the humans are creepy fetishists.  The smarmy business guy and badass super white military guy should have won.

I loved it when, before the big battle, they like pray to the tree spirit god of the forest, and then they fight and get reckt by the technofascists, but then in an awe-inspiring emotional turn of the tide the forest comes alive or some shit and secures their victory and it's all beautiful and James Cameron is a master genius.

On WYL and Twitter Costanza would constantly post the bad reviews for it without having seen it.

The set design was just godly, the director was a designer and it shows. Most convincing and slick looking computer world ever. In fact the set CG is so good I'd almost call it timeless if not for CG Bridges.

Music was on another level. I loved (I mean, really loved) Reznor's score for TSN but I think Legacy's should have gotten the Oscar nod. But that wasn't ever going to happen I guess so I'm happy they at least acknowledged the second best score that year.

I would hesitate to call Costanza an indie fanboy seeing as most of what he likes are semi mainstream movies, and he also thinks anything made before 1986 is shit so there's that.

I'm sure I'd love Avatar, because I basically like anything with lush SF/fantasy landscapes. Someone could make a movie that consists 100% of panning around mystic CG forests and stuff, with no characters or action or anything, and it would be my favorite movie ever. That's why I haven't seen it - I don't want to be in the awkward position of really liking a movie that I objectively know isn't very good qua movie
