Got a Kindle Fire for Christmas. What are the best apps for this thing?

Read Romance of the Three Kingdoms kindle version for a bit, and it's pretty good. Much better than using my ipod touch to do the same job.

The Kindle store is easy to navigate.

This is my first android device.

Bad power button placement and no hardware volume buttons I think. Something about bad privacy too? Don't really know. A lot of people just seem down on em.

I like it a lot. The power button placement IS bad. It's at the very bottom so if it hits your jeans or something, it'll power down. I've got a case for it, though, and I'll try it out with the case to see if it happens more frequently. Navigation isn't as smooth as ios related stuff but I chalk that up to android due to my inexperience with the os. On the other hand, the thing is a FANTASTIC reading experience if you're a reader. The screen owns.

I'm going to try out my free Prime membership so I can watch some video later.

From what I've seen this thing is mostly an e-reader with tablet features, not a full on tablet. Which is exactly what I wanted and given the price (I mean, it was a gift though) it's a pretty damn good product.

If I wanted to get a tablet, I'd get the Samsung Galaxy or Ipad 2 or something.

Browser supports flash. It's not as fast as it's going to be on your computer. It's very barebones but it gets the job done, but it's not great either and the interface is troubling. Wrote this post from the browser btw. If there's one issue with the browser, or interface, it's the keyboard; it's very cramped, but it's nothing horrible.

This Xmas seems to be a real breakthrough point for tablets. I know so many people who are getting iPads or kindles this year.

TBH, I don't wanna be a dick but I don't see the point of full on tablets which is why I stuck with the kindle fire, which I mostly got for reading books, magazines, and comics. I mean, i like the novelty of watching movies or browsing, but for the most part, I can do those things on a completely superior device: my laptop. Which is why I find tablets so pointless - we already have mobile devices that allow media, and superior to boot. So I never understand why tablet fans make such a stink about features that tablets have, but can't do exponentially well, that you could do just as easily, and better, on a laptop. Most of these tablets have the same battery life, or even worse battery life than the average laptop as well.

I don't get it.

So I'm going to read Neil Gaiman on my Kindle Fire.

Watching movies and playing iOS games and using ios apps is much easier on my iPad than my laptop. If I was forced to choose between one or the other I would take my laptop but a tablet provides a device that is just more comfortable and convenient than a laptop for a lot of leisure situations.

someone at work has a kindle fire and i messed around with it a little bit. compared to the kindle e-ink reader in terms of just reading, it's a terrible experience. you're just never get a favorable reading experience out of an lcd based reader over an e-ink reader.

for other stuff, browsing, and stuff like that. it seemed ok.

I'm on one now. Its too small for comics. Too much spanning and zooming because the screen is so small. Great device to browse the net and read casually.

Free ebooks on the Fire:

1. Download Caliber
2. Set up a Caliber server.
3. Torrent a shitload of .mobi books.
4. Download books from Caliber server using the Fire browser.
5. Use the free ES File Manager app to transfer the books from your Documents dir to the Books dir.

I dunno. I got a Kindle Touch for Christmas as well. Oops. I tried it out and...I like it way more than the Fire.

I'm going to see if it's possible to return the Fire because I much prefer the e-ink screen and other features.

Did you pick up a case for your Touch, Himu? I'm hesitant to spent $60 on the official case with the light when most impressions I'm seeing appear to be kinda cool on it. I'd like to get something like the DODOcase, but they don't make one that fits the Touch.

Lotta folks seem to be saying the official cases for the Touch feel cheap and flimsy and the light is cheap shit and shines directly in your eyes unless you hold it at a particular angle. Not what I expect for nearly half the price of the unit itself, but I don't see a better alternative.

After reading the OP I was about to say you need a touch if you wanted a kindle for reading since the e-ink screen is 1000000000000x better than LCD but you were one step ahead of me.

I did a lot of research before going with kindle over nook. And it came down to two things:

Amazon has the better ebook store. I found about 15 books I wanted to read on Amazons store but not B&N. And none the other way around.

B&N as a company is struggling. Brick and mortar book stores are a dying breed. Amazon is not in that situation. In 15 years which of my electronic purchases are more likely to be still around? Easily more likely answer is Amazon.

nook has: better font choices and scaling, actual page-turn tabs on the case, a MUCH nicer UI and a richer feature set. the kindle touch is super bare-bones as touch e-ink readers go.

Eh I don't want to put my faith into a electronic library I don't expect to be around in 10 years. Especially for drmed software which I don't want to have to take the time to remove and back up.

I doubt B&N is going anywhere. They will adjust and survive. there will always be a need for physical book stores and there is no other corporation to take that spot.

It happened to music, don't want to take the chance especially with what I hope spend on ebooks. Rather go with the stable market leader.

it's light, covers the screen (mostly, slight gap) when i am not using it, and has a textured back for a steadier grip

i don't like bulky cases so i wanted to keep it as close to "bare" as possible

If you want to check out the quality before you buy you can see the one on Diana's kindle if you come by. It's pretty small and doesn't add much to it. It still easily fits in her purse and is lightweight.
