2011: yay, nay, or gay?
« on: December 26, 2011, 10:15:11 PM »
I think this will be the 4th year in a row I've done since being here on EB.

How was your year.

This might be the first time that this might actually be a yay year.  I was genuinely surprised.

It started out catastrophically nay, thanks to a gay 2010, but now it's slightly leaning towards the yay kind of gay.

First half was really great.  Best time in years.  Hectic and stressful, but fun.  Second half started out with some odd health concerns.  It was still good, just a drop from the first half.  Overall 2011 was good.

The entire year went by so fast.  I can barely remember what happened in September, October, and November.

I have a feeling 2012 will be bad though. Won't be herp derp end of the world Mayan bad, but bleh. My grandma's cancer came back, so we've been dealing with that. She's doing quite well but I just have a bad feeling about next year. Just hits me with a ton of bricks knowing I might not have any grandparents soon

It's been a YAY year. It started off NAY, as I'm pretty sure this is the year of My Big Middle Age Crisis. Somehow it got turned around into a Middle Age Opportunity, by an even bigger "crisis." It turns out most crises are opportunities when viewed from the proper angle.

2012 is going to be very challenging, but it will also be the year I get to do a job I'm even better at than the one I've been doing for years.

2010

Not only was it the worst year of my life, it but it was extremely terrible for the rest of the family. 2011 is definitely gonna be better, there is literally no way but up for us.

Edit: Unless I die, of course. Definitely the only possible way down.

Not really, I bought a house big enough to raise 3 children in, in a place I'm content living the rest of my life.
Also, I financed in a way that allows me to pay for it with half of my current pay, leaving me room to switch careers.

So basically, if the house prices, my career or my relationship goes to shit (or all of them at once), I'm still covered.

Well, my wife became pregnant in January of this year, and since we hadn't planned on having a kid yet, it started out as a 'nay'. However, time went on, we came around to the idea, and our son was born, and not only is fatherhood not as awful as I initially dreaded, but I'd go so far as to say that I enjoy it. So, we'll call it a 'yay'.

I have a broken down vehicle in one of the biggest metropolitan cities in the country that utterly relies on vehicular transportation. I've been trying to get a professional full time job, but no avail and it has me utterly broken. Especially since my car is so unreliable, and I have to rely upon to get anywhere to appease potential employers. No reliable car, less opportunity for a job, but without a better job I can't get a better car. Meanwhile college loans are piling up and I have to work at a fucking grocery store just to help my mom out, while my dad travels around working his ass off while he has goddamn cancer.

2011 sucked.

Been married for... 17 months now. We've been together for closing in on five years now, and known each other longer than that.

Parenthood is an interesting change that I had thought was a few years away. It's certainly... something. It's not all sunshine and roses. The first month to month and a half -- while still rewarding -- lead to many days of walking about feeling like a zombie given the inexperience and anxiety of dealing with a baby that is completely reliant on you and also has no concept of your sleep schedule.

But, eventually you simultaneously get used to less sleep while the baby starts to develop something of a routine. And you forget that changing diapers once disgusted you, and the child starts to show signs of being a real human being with emotions other than incessant crying. It all comes together and starts to feel incredibly rewarding.

The obvious downside is that more responsibility means less time to do whatever you want. But, it's all worth it. Why that is can only be articulated poorly, but it is.

Fairly nay :'( Dad died, I dropped out of uni ('taking a break'), working in a kitchen, relatively poor compared to previous years working in IT though kitchen work is mindless and easy as well as physically tiring which is satisfying, a weird ongoing health issue with worrying symptoms (esophageal varices) and a yet to be solved mystery cause  which has forced me to stop drinking (too much  :P) and my doctor also wants me to stop smoking and drinking coffee  >:( my life without such vices is a little hard to comprehend. Got 2 months worth of nicotine patches I'm going to try after the New Year and I've finished my current pouch and am down to 2 coffees a day while working and 1 or none when I'm not. Still have the odd beer but haven't been drunk for a month or more.

On the upside lifes fairly easy, I've got a supportive partner and enough quality vidja backlogged to last till the apocalypse. I'm kind of looking forward to 2012 as a bum year filled with doing whatever!! Booked in for a holiday north of Auckland which will be HOT and full of golden sandy beaches.

Thanks Business. I plan on continuing IT but it's hard to find a good job and I'd already had three years experience working front of house and was interested in getting something in hospitality again but didn't want to deal with stupid customers anymore so I'm trying out kitchen life. Pay cut definitely sucks, but there's nothing quite like good, physical, fun work. Hope 2012 is smoother for you now you've found a career you enjoy, I toyed with the idea of trying officers training a few years back because they pay your way through uni if you get through, but I'm too lazy.

There have been a number of TV specials in Japan about salarymen who were laid off after the Japanese economic bubble burst. Some of them left the city to become farmers; apparently Japan's countryside has become tremendously depopulated due to young people moving to the cities, and the government has some kind of program which pays people who are willing to relocate to the "inaka" (rural areas).

What I noticed is that the photos they'd show of the salarymen working in the office were these pale, meek, stolid looking guys, and then they'd cut to these same guys in the present-day. They're thinner, skin like raisins, commonly missing a couple teeth which I'd consider necessary to my continued self-esteem... but their whole aspect is healthier, and they are full of (gap-toothed) smiles, nearly constantly. These guys are getting up at 04:30~05:00 every day, and busting their ass, but they look like they're going to outlive their co-workers who are still in the office.

The job I just left, I'd seen several people have nervous breakdowns, and many more times their number quit the company to "go somewhere better" which actually turned out to be the same or worse.
