How well has 5 held up? I thought about playing this before playing 6, which looks pretty good.
5 is a great game with some quirks. If you compare it to RE4, it's going to be a let down, but it still does a lot of very good things. The combat itself, for instance, is massively improved over RE4, mostly due to the melee improvements; on the other hand, the boss fights are mostly pretty bad or average. The co-op mode is really fun, and while the game is "developed" for co-op mode in mind, you can easily play through the entire game on each mode without a co-op partner. If you've played RE4 before you should be familiar with the controls.
The beauty of RE5 is mostly in the way of unlockables. I won't say it's the best RE (RE4 gets that nod, RE2 is runner up) but it's certainly the
funnest: it has easily the best Mercs mode, especially with a buddy, it has a ridiculous amount of shit to unlock, and I spent an upward of 50 hours getting a 1000/1000 for the game.
Not to mention, and this is rare you will ever see this coming from me, but it is still one of the best looking games this generation.
I'd say give it a shot, but don't go in with certain expectations. It was easily my favorite game that year, though, so it may surprise you.
i gotta say, i was disappointed by the absence of the series' female playable characters AGAIN. make jill or claire or ada or even rebecca playable characters again! that was part of what made of the old-school games so cool imo.
Leon's new squeeze seems playable.
also, no black people. Capcom won't let Josh, the only good character in Resident Evil 5, leave Africa. Those racists.
Didn't they hint in the game's ending that

I'm sure he'll come into play.
