It's shameful that Wii U is the next console I'm most likely to buy  :'(  Depends on what the launch lineup is.  New Zelda or quality Mario (NSMB or 3D Land, I'll pass) or maybe even Retro's next game.  I was burned by the PS3 and 3DS for buying them without any real compelling software in the first year.  Sony and MS don't have a lot of exclusive software that'd get me stupid.  There's not much from MS that I'd care about now that PGR is done; Banjo Nuts and Bolts 2, a proper Crackdown 3, um, Halo series in in a weird place so it depends on Halo 4, maybe another Shadow Complex.  For Sony, Naughty Dog's next gen game (depending on how The Last of Us turns out cause Uncharted 3 was disappointing) and Sucker Punch's next game.

I'm mostly excited for next gen for better looking PC games than more hardware.

Star Tropics is almost as bad as Kid Icarus, plus it already got a crappy sequel.  Mole Mania is awesome but there isn't much potential there for a sequel aside from some kind of e-shop thing.  I'd love to see a sequel to Drill Dozer though.  Maybe whenever that team's other series becomes unprofitable they'll get a chance to sequel DD.

StarTropics is great! (and I don't think Zoda's Revenge is that bad!) the series doesn't get the same obnoxious reverence as Kid Icarus or Mother.

another series that was great and more or less killed by weaker games is Wario Land.  Wario Land VB to 4 are great.  Wario Land Wii is a pretty (but) dull game, and that DS game was poor.

If I meant first six months I would have said six months.  3DS still hasn't been worth it.  Resident Evil Revelations in February is the first game that might be worth it, which is just about a year since the thing released.  About the same length from PS3 release until Uncharted 1.

Like the PS3 there were good games between release and that.  I liked Resistance (multiplayer was great), Folklore, and Heavenly Sword.  For the 3DS, I like Zelda 64 port and Mario 3D Land; I haven't played Pushmo yet but I heard enough praise from trustworthy people, but include that too.  Neither library up until that point has been worth the cost.  Actually, PS3 was slightly better because I used it a lot for watching blu-rays and playing PS2 games.

btw, this is a general sentiment, but whenever someone opens a post with "Eh" there's a zero perfect chance anything that follows will be worth reading, so I don't.

Oh early PS2. I didn't bother with The Bouncer but I had the awesomeness that was Onimusha along with the half of a game that was Zone of the Enders. I feel Wario Land VB really has an undeserved unicorn status thanks to being one of the few VB games worth playing.  When it came out and I got it, at no point was I going "hell yeah, this is awesome" - rather, I was going "well, this isn't awful, how refreshing".  It's only above average in the context of the VB's library.

I'd agree if it was just Wario Land VB, but the Gameboy games that followed were great.  Out of the four between the gameboys, the only one I don't remember fondly is 3. 

To chime in on the extreme 3DS value debate, I feel like it's been worth it to me.  Just barely, but yar, between Ridge Racer, Starfox and Zelda ports, Super Mario 3D Land, Shinobi, Pushmo, Mario Kart 7, the wealth of roms they have dumped on me and the few roms I bought myself (Gargoyle's Quest, Bionic Commando)... I'm okay with it now.  The first six months was awful though - reminded me of the PS2 where I didn't play anything but PS1 games and SSX until GT3 came out.

Shinobi was the one I forgot.  I want to pick that up for the 3DS.  Those other ones I didn't buy because I didn't want them.  I'm sure I would be more favorable towards it if I did, which is like saying I would've liked the PS3 more if I didn't have a PC or 360 at the time.

As for PS2, since we're dipping into the past, I didn't buy one at launch.  I was still a kid in 2000.  The reason I wanted one was for Armored Core 2.  It took saving up, selling my PS1, and a holiday to convince my parents to buy one.  I never really noticed the dearth of games for it, or the Gamecube, N64, and other systems, until I was older.  When I had enough money to buy anything I wanted, I got a different perspective about these things.  Back then Armored Core 2 or Chameleon Twist was the one new game every blue moon.  Now I buy games and let them sit in my backlog 

I think Zone of the Enders might have been my second PS2 game.  I had Yanya Caballista City Skater at some point too but returned it after two days.

to be fair, it's not just a linear rail shooter.  a big part of the game is a third person shooter/brawler.  there's also online versus multiplayer.   plus there's a collectible AR card game component.

I don't know about this system seller stuff, but it seems to be feature packed.  I'm thinking it's the online multiplayer that's supposed to catch on or something.

Gonna have to disagree with you there.  And I'll take the 3DS launch over the PS2 and PS3 launches...especially since I imported the PS2.  It had jack shit for almost a year, and that's not hyperbole.  RRV wasn't as good as RR4, SFEX3 was a rushed mess, Tekken Tag was good, and there was a port of DOA2 (not Hardcore, just DOA2)...yay.

star tropics bad? wtf, it is an excellent Zelda 1 clone with a tougher challenge. It was pretty bad ass at the time.

Those games are lightgun games and while fun, are't exactly the type of rail shooter I'm talking about. I prefer shooters where you have control over your avatar but no freedom towards where you can really go, hence games like Panzer Dragoon or Sin and Punishment. Nintendo has revived the genre with recent efforts coming from Sin and Punishment 2, Starfox 3d, and the new Kis Icarus. Child of Eden, too, is a recent rail shooter.
