Rate the shmups available on 360
« on: January 23, 2012, 10:04:34 PM »
I have an itch to play some more shmups! On 360, I have Omega 5. I have Ikaruga on DC but will probably pick that up again. I've played a bunch of others on MAME and iOS. Download is preferred (not keen on putting a disk in to play an arcade game for a few mins...)

What are your faves, EB? Radiant Silvergun or Bug Princess? Deathsmiles or Guwange? Let me know!

mushihime-sama futari or that dual pack with mushi mushi pork & pink sweets would be what I'd get.

edit: and yes, there needs to be some sort of re-release of gradius v.

I would add a sentence or two to try and describe the games, but I think linking to a youtube video would be more useful:

S-tier:
Mushihime-sama Futari (+Black Label DLC) - Pretty much my favorite game of all time. Has modes suitable for players of all skill levels (from easiest to hardest): BL Original / 1.5 Original / BL Maniac / 1.5 Maniac / God Mode / Ultra
Dodonpachi Daioujou Black Label (NTSCJ only) - This game is basically perfect (port quality not withstanding). It's been out of print for years though, so it might be expensive (cost me $80-90 from ebay). Black Label Arcade mode
Ketsui (NTSCJ only) - Fun scoring system based on point-blanking, relatively difficult first loop, great music, good console arrange mode. Arcade mode / X-mode

A-Tier:
Espgaluda II Black Label - Excellent game and an improvement over the original, but it's one of Cave's hardest single-loop shooters and the subsystems are fairly complex. I would only recommend this to intermediate-advanced players. The Black Label arrange mode is great though (and much easier), definitely one of Cave's best console modes. Arcade mode / Black Label
Akai Katana Shin (NTSCJ only) - Another great game, extremely underrated. Fun scoring system in every mode, excellent music,  relatively easy to clear but hard to score well on, great console exclusive modes, very nice graphics and art. Arcade mode / Zetsu / Shin
Death Smiles II - Another underrated game, mostly because of the Dreamcast-quality 3D graphics. The game itself is very good and an improvement over the original (though it lacks polish), and the console mode is another one of Cave's better efforts. Great soundtrack too. Arcade mode / 2X Mode
Raiden Fighters Aces - A collection of the Raiden Fighters games. The main attraction here is RF Jet, which is fuck awesome. Raiden Fighters Jet

B-Tier:
Strania (XBLA $10) - G.rev game. Pretty different from the usual bullet hell, but still great in its own right. Has $5 DLC which is basically an entirely new game as well, so it's a great value. Normal mode / Side Vower Hard mode
Death Smiles - This game would be A-tier, but personally I don't think the game is fun at all when going for a high-end score, and the pacing sucks (6 easy stages followed by 1 or 2 hard ones). Other than that it has lots of content and is great if you don't mind ignoring Death Mode. The dual analog console mode is also pretty fun. Arcade mode / Mega Black Label
Muchi Muchi Pork! & Pink Sweets - Double pack of some of Cave's less popular games. Much like Death Smiles, Pork would be A-tier if I didn't dislike the high-end scoring techniques so much. If you ignore that it's great. Pink Sweets is pretty different from the usual Cave style, but it's still fun. It's just not really my thing. And the arrange mode for Pink Sweets is great. Muchi Muchi Pork / Pink Sweets / Pink Sweets Arrange
Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu (+ Black Label DLC): More beginner friendly than Daioujou, and not nearly as unforgiving when it comes to chaining. Honestly I haven't played this game a ton as it's not really to my taste, but there are some people who love it so ymmv. Personally I'd rather play Daioujou. Version 1.5 / Black Label

Eschatos is another game that seems really nice, but I haven't played it much. It also comes with Judgment Silversword and Cardinal Sins, two Wonderswan games from the same developer. I also thought Strike Witches was pretty enjoyable, but it's pretty casual and low budget. Fun for a while though.

As for XBLA, Trouble Witches Neo is a good game with lots of content. It has amusingly bad voice acting and it's only $10. Guwange is also $10, but I think this is Cave's worst game and I don't really like it (it has great aesthetics though). And Ikaruga is good of course.

There are a few games on the JP Games on Demand store as well, but I haven't played most of them: Shooting Love 200X, Mamoru-kun, Radirgy Noah, Bullet Soul, and Otomedius Gorgeous (I've played this, it's okay. Not as good as any of the classic Konami shooters though.)

this post is pretty messy, but fuck it I'm done.

OK, i've ordered Dodonpachi Daioujou Black Label (4,500 yen!) and Mushihime-sama on disk (played the latter a fair bit on iOS already), looking forward to 'em. Will work down the rest of the list later in life perhaps. Many thanks.

The Mushihime-sama for iOS is the original game actually, Futari is the sequel (and I think literally everyone considers Futari superior). Mushi 1 is the only Cave game I haven't played (well, that and Ibara Kuro), which is partly why I'm dying for a 360 port. :(

Pink Sweets is amazing for many reasons, although you have to play it very differently from other shooting games and it's very punishing if you screw up.  I can talk about this game all day, lots of people don't understand how to play it and shit on it for that, although at least it got a bit more cred once it was ported.  Love all those people who hear descriptions or watch youtube videos and make strong judgements!  Probably the same folk who were screaming about how Daifukkatsu was the best game ever and then reversed their opinion once they actually played the damn thing.

Speaking of, I'm in the camp that really likes Daifukkatsu.  The arrange modes are really well-done, most people like them even if you don't like 1.5.  Black Label is also worth picking up, it's a completely different game.

Bullet Soul is a great game if you're not a hardcore scorer and just want to mess around and play a 90s-style game with lots of explosions and fun shit to do.  It's perfect for casual players.

Mamoru-kun is average, similar to the old Pocky & Rocky games, I had fun with it.

Shooting Love 200X has awesome multiplayer, the games are pretty generic but they're fun to mess around with.  Don't know how much it is on GOD but I wouldn't spend too much on it.

Raiden 4 is all right, you kind of know what to expect when you go in.  Solid shooting action, nothing mindblowing.

Be aware that many of the CAVE games have stupid-ass first-print DLC shit which you cannot get through other means, you can't even buy it in the marketplace.  Some shit is dumb like voice packs, but other games have special arrange modes which are a lot of fun and you're really missing out by not having it.  I really like Daifukkatsu's 1.51.  If you're worried about that stuff, you better be prepared to do a lot of searching to find a sealed first-run copy.

Discovering that with Mushihime-sama Futari Platinum Hits version - it won't let me buy the DLC. Did they put a code in the initial release or something?

Yup, first-print editions get special bonus DLC codes that are impossible to obtain otherwise.  It seems like a good idea to buy a bunch of sealed copies and sit on them for a few years, I'd imagine the value of a sealed title with the codes must skyrocket.

You'd think they would have some sense and charge money for them once the first wave of copies are out of the marketplace.  I can understand encouraging people to buy right away and discourage used-game sales, but after a certain point you can't easily find these copies anymore and reprints don't come with it.  Now us consumers are stuck with an incomplete version of the game, seems like it would be easy money to charge 400-800 points for it.  Oh well, guess the CASUAL gamers weren't loyal enough to blindly throw your money down on release-date, they ain't true shooting fans, they deserve to be punished!

You're trying to buy the Black Label DLC right? I don't think there should be any problems with it, and it's available on every region's marketplace (for 1200 points). Might just be a problem with XBL or something. The DLC originalz is talking about is for version 1.01, which was the first-print bonus. I never got it either, but I don't think you can even see it on the marketplace without a code for it.

huh. I hit the Marketplace button in-game and got an error saying 'No DLC available at this time' or somesuch. I thought it was probably a connection error or something 'til I saw this thread. Will try again.

Although it's not top priority. The base game alone is plenty for now. Plus, I just got Dodonpachi working on iCade thanks to DCharlie :bow

In other shmup-related news, Cave is going to start releasing one game a month on the Games on Demand service.

Doesn't say what regions it will be available to though. And I assume that this will only be games that Cave has published, so Ketsui and especially DOJ probably won't make it.
