Totally agreed, they're divisive idiots. And I think it was definitely a good idea that they were held at a distance. Jackson supported Obama, Sharpton supported Clinton. And of course Jackson had the "cut his nuts off" thing which probably helped Obama even more lol

What I hate about them both is that they're the face of black American leadership and are a contributing factor to holding the people back.

It's so easy to make too. Haven't had it in awhile since it's rather unhealthy, but mmmmmmmmm.

I've heard Red Tails has some great action scenes but the acting/drama is wooden.

You mean you heard it was a George Lucas film?

summed up:  Tree of Life somehow didn't win cinematography.  Hugo won everything else.

Oh shit @ that article. I haven't seen the film, but everything I've heard about it just rubs me the wrong way. Most people I know who saw it loved it though

It seems like these films films about the compassion of white people towards black people come out every other year and win awards or make money; think The Blind Side. Outside of that, the only other big black films are Tyler Perry bullshit. I've heard Red Tails has some great action scenes but the acting/drama is wooden.

Oh well. Can't wait for Django Unchained.

I liked The Help but didn't think it was some great pro civil rights film.  I haven't heard feedback from black people about The Help but after reading this article, I could certainly see why some would be offended.  The lack of strong black male characters is certainly glaring.  Although I don't agree with all of his points, it's always nice to see Hollywood being called out for its subtle racism through stereotyping.

My main qualm with The Help is that its popularity screwed up Jessica Chastain's nomination for The Tree of Life which would have given her a far better chance at winning an Oscar (although she did look fantastic in The Help).

It's nice to see something different win.  Maybe Hollywood would stop pumping out so many formulaic films.

Seriously? It's a period romance about a silent film actor with almost no spoken dialog. If that's not pure Oscar-bait, I don't know what is.

And it was distributed by the Weinsteins.

How many silent films have been made in the last 20 years though?  It might be Oscar bait but it was also a very likely bust.

I felt extremely indifferent to all the nominees and winners, except for Meryl's speech. A lot would say her sincerity is questionable, but it was really sweet nonetheless.

Only thing I felt strongly about was tree of life winning cinematography.  The only other acceptable option would've been Moneyball, just to give Wally Pfister another one, but that wasn't even nominated.

I mostly didn't watch after that.  Just listening to it, the show seemed to be: shit happening, Natalie Portman spoiling The Artist, other shit happening.

Didn't watch it, but glad Hugo won some stuff.

Hugo & Drive were my two favorites from 2011.  Though I still need to see The Artist.

And yeah, Tree of Life not winning cinematography is lolz.

What won best score?

I need to see Hugo so bad, but that's one movie that I'd feel weird watching at home I think.  From what I've read, you owe it to yourself to experience it in a theater.

Definitely see it in 3D.  Everyone I know whose only watched it in 2d has been less than impressed to say the least.  I thought it was good in 2d, but fantastic in 3d.

The Artist doubled its budget from American theaters alone.

The Artist was a fun romantic comedy nothing more, the fact is they gave it all these awards just because it didn't have any dialog which I find pretty pathetic.

Midnight in Paris was the same Woody Allen movie that we've had a million times, but this time it was in Paris. Good movie, but I liked how he was branching out with Match Point and Vicki Christina.

Or the fact that it cleverly used its lack of dialog to carry the film.  It's silence is a plot device, not just a choice by the filmmakers.

The Artist is fine but I find it hilarious because it was semi-obviously made as a tongue-in-cheek pastiche but ended up getting taken deadly seriously. I'd keep my mouth shut and take the statues, too!

I really need to see the second OSS film, as the first one is fecking great.  I think The Artist winning the big one ain't right, but its a pretty good 2nd or 3rd choice.

Match Point was freaking awesome and totally unexpected from a Woody Allen film.  Who'd have thought that Woody was capable of making a thriller?

I enjoyed Midnight despite it being similar to many other Woody Allen films.  The cinematography and score were spectacular and I like how the romance was mostly about something other than love between people.

Isn't the whole point of The Artist that it's formulaic?

Actually, the main villaness is a true redhead.  Emma Stone is really a blonde.  Also, Chastain wore a blonde wig to cover her real red hair.
