Following its first failed attempt with Neo Geo Pocket, SNK is lending its name to a new portable gaming device.

Famicom Plaza has a look at at the new device, which carries official licensing from SNK Playmore. The device, currently going by the placeholder name of "Neo Geo Portable Device," has 4.3 inch screen, two gigabytes of internal storage, and ships with 20 Neo Geo classics built in:

    1.WORLD HEROES
    2.ULTIMETE 11
    3.TOP PLAYER'S GOLF
    4.SENGOKU
    5.NAM-1975
    6.MUTATION NATION
    7.LAST RESORT
    8.KING OF MONSTERS
    9.FRENZY
    10.CYBER LIP
    11.FATAL FURY SPECIAL
    12.ART OF FIGHTING
    13.SUPER SIDEKICKS
    14.LEAGUE BOWLING
    15.METAL SLUG
    16.MAGICAL LORD
    17.BASEBALL STARS PROFESSIONAL
    18.SAMURAI SHODOWN
    19.KING OF FIGHTERS '94
    20.FATAL FURY

The games are all the North American versions with English.

According to the Famicom Plaza report, the device is 170x72x15mm and is a bit larger than an iPhone-like smartphone. It has a 2200mAh battery.

Controls on the device include four face buttons, a d-pad, four shoulder buttons, a menu button, a start button, and buttons for volume and brightness. Ports include headphones, AV and an SD.

No details yet on pricing or release date. Famicom Plaza's report does not list the maker.

I had the idea for an Android gaming handheld that was pretty much this.  :-\ Although, boneheaded move putting the SD slot on the side. Missed a perfect opportunity to put it where game carts normally go.

Is this Android or Linux-based or something?  Not sure what's so amazing about this, unless it has a lot of power to hack, otherwise you might as well just get a Wiz or whatever's popular now.  Oh boy, preloaded with a bunch of old-ass Neogeo titles that I've played millions of times now!  One of these days SNK will release a set of good games that are from the latter half of the 90s.

if it's a microswitch stick like on the ngp or neo geo pad, it's actually better than a d-pad (for fighting games at least)

SAMURAI SHOWDOWN FUCK YEAH

Who the hell wants the first game though?  2 and 4 would have been much better choices.  Every time SNK releases some sort of history pack it's a bunch of old-ass games that are hardly the best that they've put out.  I just don't understand why everyone is all excited about this handheld from what we know, other than having a nice design.

It's real after all according to Famitsu:

http://andriasang.com/con0b8/neo_geo_x/
Quote
Visit neogeox.com and you can register to receive information about a new Neo Geo X portable system.

The system is an actual SNK Playmore sanctioned device. Famitsu.com confirmed with SNK Playmore that the product does have official licensing.

(Image removed from quote.)

According to Famitsu's report, Neo Geo X will be released in the second quarter of 2012 and will come bundled with 20 Neo Geo classics, including King of Fighters '94, Metal Slug, and Samurai Showdown. Tommo Inc will release the device in America. Blaze will handle release duties in Europe, the Middle East and Australia. A distributor for Japan and Asia will be announced shortly.

This does seem to be the same device that a retailer revealed a few weeks back. See our original story for specifications, more pics, and the full list of included games.

haha for a guy like diun they might as well have announced the price at a jillion gabillion dollars

or twenty bucks, that'd probably be equally out of reach

Since you know your sales, just how well did those $200+ Neo Geo games sell?  It always blew my mind that SNK would charge outrageous MSRPs for them.

Since you know your sales, just how well did those $200+ Neo Geo games sell?  It always blew my mind that SNK would charge outrageous MSRPs for them.

I have no doubt that the majority of these games sold right out since Neo-Geo AES titles became a total collector's market.   We had to special order them for retail sales and brick and mortar stores stopped carrying the games very quickly after the system came out.  I only saw used games in Japanese stores back then.  Games from certain regions also had more value; U.S. games had way lower print runs even though the only difference was the box art and manual.  Euro versions were even rarer.  Then you had guys making bootlegs (put MVS cart guts into an AES cart and slap on a fake label!) and/or ruining carts by stamping their names all over them (the infamous "Neo-Geo Freak" duo).

I used to buy and sell AES games for a profit when I was done with them.  The "worst" I ever did was break even on a game I'd had for a year and the craziest thing I ever did was buying two games at once (Waku Waku 7 and Kizuna Encounter for $300+ each)...I was a teenager and could barely afford one Neo game 1-2 times a year.

As crazy as it sounds, $275-$325 is also pretty cheap for a relatively-new arcade game.  The MVS kits new could cost as much as $1,500....THAT was crazy, especially when MVS cart prices would fall to crazy-low prices after the AES releases hit.

The most insane thing I ever saw was a dude who sold the majority of his Neo MVS collection to buy SNK Vs. Capcom: SvC Chaos NEW.  That game did not have an MVS cart release and instead was released as a board.  It was $1,500-$2,000 and he sold off so much shit to pay for it....then the game was a huge disappointment and nobody cared about it after a week.  SNK released the home AES version and a PS2 version only a few months later, too.

I kept on buying Neo games until 2003.  By that point I had a modded XBox and was playing new games on an emulator, with filtering and in 480P, before they even came out on cart.

Thanks for your post, lyte.

I just don't see a 500 GBP Neo Geo handheld doing that well outside of a few thousand people who are hardcore collectors.  I suppose they assume that price because of all of the games that are built in but I don't see how anyone outside of crazy collectors would bother.  I'd rather just download some illegal ROMs and play them instead.

Nah, the price makes no sense no matter how you look at it.  Neo-Geo collectors are also anti-emulation and wouldn't want this thing anyway.

This handheld is now coming out for a more...sane...price at $129.99 standalone or $199.99 for the handheld, TV-out dock, and Neo-Geo joystick.

I'd be more interested in this if it can be easily hacked and loaded with all the ROMs, especially when I now have the Neo-Geo emulator running on my PSP Go.

It's also being made by Blaze, who has a bad reputation for putting out shitty hardware/using bad emulation for other similar devices like a portable Genesis emulation handheld.

The only reason that would be worthwhile to be hacked is if that's a microswitch dpad like in the ngpc. The perfect way to emulate motm if true.
