Dragula in 2012! (Twisted Metal demo)
« on: January 31, 2012, 10:38:05 PM »
it's up on PSN

had server troubles earlier today and could only play deathmatch, but it was pretty damn fun.

Game feels really old.  Every button does something different.  You use the face buttons to accelerate/break/powerslide.  Really fast too.

Those are compliments, btw.

Downloading.

I am a huge closet TM fan.  I loved Black so much.  Going through all those story modes, seeing the endings and then having Paint it Black start playing on the credit roll each time...bliss.

I was initially pissed it seemed like this new TM was cutting back on the story mode (no unique characters, GANGS instead :|) in order to be a MP online game.   But I've heard from the demo impressions that it feels REALLY good like old TM, but that the AI is bullshit hard in the demo.

If it plays like Black and the story mode is not terrible I might buy.

HOLY FUCK

WOAAAAAAAAAAH

DAVID JAFFE HAS SURPRISED ME BY MAKING A GOOD GAME

This is incredible.  Like you said, it's straight out of 90s REAL GAMING design.  So fast, so complex.  The stage in the demo is HUGE with tons of secret areas.  The speed is insanely fast.  I'm gonna have to pull an isamu and ffffuuuuu omggggg  this demo has blown me away.  I thought the game was going to suck but I AM RACING TO PRE-ORDER this as fast as I can now.

I have hated on Jaffe for years because I think GoW1 kind of sucks compared to its sequels, but my god, he freaking did it with his under-budgeted small staff over the years.

I love this game. Meat Wagon owns. I'm not getting all the complaints about the difficulty. The only vehicle I died easily with was Reaper but then again I've always died easily with Mr. Grimm.

Anyone else catch Sammy Hagar's You Can't Drive 55 on the soundtrack. I couldn't help but laugh. That was a nice touch.

lack of replies/interest shows why they didn't bother to make a new TM for all these years  ;)

Great series, but very niche.

It was on the soundtrack for TM4, so maybe!  Oh yeah and you could play as Rob Zombie in the Dragula so maybe he's in this one.  Gotta check it out

Nuke mode doesn't work with random people online.  It went 2 matches, each match was maybe two times attacking and two times defending, and neither team scored.  Your entire team needs to be defending the person carrying the guy at the rocket.

And controls do need some work.  The main one for me is the circle button as brake/reverse.   Press to brake, double tap to reverse -or- right stick back to reverse, right stick back + R3 (stick click) to turbo reverse.  That and the motion controlled boost attack are bad.

Eh, motion control SUPER BOOST is rarely used and for those rare moments a simple swing doesn't bother me.  You're mainly using double tap square boost anyways when driving.

Reverse is a little weird, I just never use it haha.  But if I did I'd probably use back R3.  I mainly just drive around with square boosting and X sliding.

The game literally ran out of buttons, so the least used things were put in slightly awkward positions.  I'm just thankful you don't need to press D,D,U,U to shoot a freeze ray or D,D,L,L to use a shield or whatever the special commands used to be.  Having to learn and remember the moves was a bit off-putting.

Reverse is incredibly useful.  I'm totally blanking on the vehicle name but the motorcycle chainsaw attack has a little delay before it launches so it's hard to get a hit normally.  Driving backwards as another car is driving at you gives you a clear shot.

And when another car is chasing you, instead of turning around, just do the turbo reverse and watch the other guy drive right past you.  Great time to use freeze or a power weapon.

Super boost is basically your melee attack.  If you time it right you can do a lot of damage with the heavier cars.  I got a few kills that way.

When I'm driving in reverse and L/R become opposites I get really confused.  Hate mirror controls!

I can see how that would be useful in the game.  But there's soooooooooooo many options to fighting a guy in this game, it's just one of many.  The game is really deep.  I hope all the stages are as complex as this one.

Yes, Dragula is on the soundtrack. I've heard it a couple times. I'd love to hurry and see the full soundtrack listing. I'm pretty stoked that they included custom soundtracks too.

As much as a fan of Zombie I am I hope he's not in it. There's so many Twisted Metal vehicles that haven't been shown and are said to possibly be DLC that it would be stupid to include him and not them (Spectre, Mr. Slam, Pit Viper, Twister).

Best strategy for Nuke with strangers is to load up on homing rockets and power rockets. Get the leader and as you're preparing the sacrifice use the shield as much as you can while firing those rockets backwards. I haven't had much problems launching rockets that way. I'm using Outlaw and Meat Wagon mainly. I think Nuke is an awesome spin on the whole capture the flag match type.

The Trophies look great. The best one I've seen is "That Just Happened." To accomplish that you must freeze an opponent that has already been frozen and allow the freeze to richoet back on you killing you. The richochet damage is only 1 pt so it's going to take a miracle to get that to happen  :lol

I watched some video of this on youtube. Kinda looks bad ass. If I had a PS3 I would buy this game.

I finished the story mode last night. I love the stories, wished there were more. It sucks that the only way to unlock Warthog is to get golds on all levels on Twisted difficulty. There is no way in hell I can do that.

demo is on the hardest difficulty.  Spread out the pack by exploring the map first and then take out dudes one at a time and collect health powerups.

On a side note, I got this a few days back but haven't had the time to put it in the PS3 because of still trying out Vita software.  Maybe sometime this week.  I really want to play this.

Getting new hardware is rough because you just want to play with it.  At least that's my experience, with the exceptions of the PS3 and 3DS.  Also why I wish Twisted Metal was on Vita as well.

Played through about half of Sweet Tooth's campaign.  Game is great as expected.  The real winner besides just having a good game engine is the maps.  They're humongous and each has dozens and dozens of hidden areas and secret jumps and discovering all that stuff is a ton of fun.  I tried using Sweet Tooth's Ice Cream truck and it was sooooo slow.  Hated it.  Went back to Death Warrant which is what I used in the demo and the game feels fast and just right.

The only downside is the Story mode is probably about 3-4 hours long since it's only 3 campaigns of 8 stages each and each stage is around 8-10 mins + retries.  It's really good for what it is, but yeah it's going to be super short.  You can tell they went this way instead of having unique story modes for every car because they didn't have the budget to do live action stories for like 12 characters.  Oh well, after the SP is over, it should be a great pick up and play MP game and fun SP w/bots game for a while.  Because it's so pick up and play it seems like the kind of game that will have an online community for some time.

Tried out the online MP.

FUN.

Game reminds me of Quake 3 Arena.  Super fast and arcade-like with a lot of depth and fun.  I mainly just play Team Deathmatch in these types of games if I'm playing with strangers since you don't need communication (because there are no objectives) and you don't get ass raped (since you have teammates).  Played a match based around only the stadium area in Sunsprings and kicked lots of ass.  I love the shotgun, riding up all close to a car and then point-blank shotgun to the car.  Good times.  After I finish story mode I should probably learn how the objective-based modes work.
