Raid Mode sounds appallingly addicting, and by that I mean I already have MH3 sucking my time I don't need another thing too. I'm actually quite baffled Capcom's put this level of dedication and production values into a 3DS/handheld game (an exclusive* one at that.) Whoever was asleep at the wheel for Wii seems to have woken up for 3DS.

* Capcom, exclusives, yada yada yada I never heard from him again

I liked the demo a lot.  I'm picking it up along with that second analog thing.

What exactly is raid mode? like mercenaries?

Much more fleshed out version of Mercenaries I think, GT compared it to PSO, missions and stats stuff, basically it's sort of like an RPG.

yeah, I saw pictures where numbers popped out of enemies borderlands style.  so there are stats and stuff? I know you can upgrade weapons in the main game since you can find parts in the demo.

I mean are you going through the main game with this new mechanic or smaller redesigned levels?

I think I read it's online co-op too which is nice

Played through chapters 1-3.  Took like four hours for just those alone!  They did a great job of making this game work well as a portable title, with scaled-down areas, but there's still moments of intensity and a lot of enemies CAN appear on the screen at once.  Although there's been several enemy types, the game seems to keep them all separate and there hasn't been an area with more than one kind of enemy yet.  Hope that changes and is not some sort of system limitation.

Beating chapter 3 makes Raid Mode available to be unlocked (on the Missions menu).  I tried the first stage and...it's all right.  They just recycle sections from the game with altered versions of the same enemy you encounter in the first few chapters during the ship sequences.  Kind of disappointing but there's a lot to unlock.  Right now Mercenaries >>>>>>>>> Raid Mode though.

Mercs the watered down 3DS game? I think your opinion may change, just going on reviews.

Glad to hear it isn't just a console experience but has been tailored appropriately.

the circle pad pro is kinda bad.  somehow with all its bulk it's less comfortable to hold than the 3DS alone.  it's hard to explain but it feels like it's missing a place to grip.  worse is that the second stick is awkwardly placed at the very right edge.  since portability is gone with the circle pad pro, it would have been nice if the thing had been designed to feel like a normal controller.  the new shoulder buttons are good, though.

using two sticks in RER is really helpful, and aside from a dumb decision to make the Y button the "MASH TO ESCAPE" button (it's the furthest button away from where you thumb is, the buttons are well mapped to put most actions on the shoulder buttons.  I just wish there was a more comfortable grip.  Seeing as it's just an IR input, a third party could release its own second analog.  I'd buy one that had real grip and possibly a real analog stick (instead of a slider).  The Hori Wheel grip is very comfortable and makes the 3DS feel like a console controller.

oh, and there's also some weirdness where you're used to the screen being in the center of the device, but now everything is offset to the left.  that doesn't bother me because I don't use 3D.

edit:  the lack of grip actually reminds me of the original wii classic controller

also  the thing blocks the stylus

I really loved Mercs on 3DS because Mercs is the best part of RE to me, especially coop. Then again I only paid $19 for it. Will probably pick this up once it gets cheap.

First three chapters are giving off a Halo ODST vibe.  There's a main hub area that's mostly quiet (the city in Halo, the boat in RE:R) and it cuts to flashbacks or w/e for the action/shooter missions.  It's weird.  The boat stuff feels like old Resident Evil, but when it cuts to missions it feel like a random linear third person shooter.  I'm not sure if weapon upgrades even count in those sequences, since the limit for pistol ammo is 40 on the boat, but 100 in the shooter level.

I'm liking it.  Wishing the entire game was like the boat, but it is what it is.  Also forgot how bad the 3DS battery is.  Game clock says around 3 hours played and the battery died (forgot to charge last night; it was fully charged when I started playing).  I'm thinking the circle pad pro drains battery because IR is constantly on or something? I had 3D off and not the maximum brightness.

the other minor issue is the dodge mechanic.  I would've liked it if simply pressing B was the dodge.  as it is I can't consistently pull it off.  I also can't figure out how to melee enemies, but an achievement says "do 10 powered up melee attacks."  shooting in the knee doesn't do anything.

I'm several more chapters in and it's been mostly stuff on the boat.  The flashbacks and other team segments give things a nice break and advance the story more.  The difficulty jumps up and down, which is a little weird.  The first boss was pretty easy to take down, but the second gave me some trouble and killed me once or twice.  Enemies can't go through doors, which is great for when you want to run into a supply room or go back for ammo lying around, but it also sucks when you have no life and health power-ups left, then open the door and three enemies are RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU.   :lol :-\  They also let you just sort of run around everywhere.  When I fought the second boss, I thought I could just run away and things would lead to a final encounter with it later, but...nope.  It was still waiting in the same place.

Also starting to see more than one type of enemy popping up in the same area.  Glad there's some variety as things begin to pick up.

Did you turn off the wireless too?

Dodging is definitely weird.  They also have purposefully made it so that you cannot dodge multiple attacks in a row.

I'm still working on melee stuff.  In Raid Mode I noticed that after stunning an enemy and then doing some knife attacks, the Y button icon came up and I was able to do a melee attack.  Maybe that's the key?

I did Raid Mode level two and it was fucking BORING.  You just go around killing the large blob-things from the beginning the of game.  ZZZZZzzzzzz.  Sorry, Mercenaries beats this all over the fucking place.  But I will reserve judgment for later levels and a higher difficulty.

yeah, I keep wireless off.  Battery went from full to a red blinking light in just 3 hours.  Last game this bad was Ys 7 running off the UMD.

Raid mode is fun-ish.  It's basically Borderlands lite.  Rudimentary loot and upgrades for weapons, currency/store, leveling up, scaling leveled enemies, and those missions for bonuses; there seems to be a streetspot pass for more missions but I haven't messed with that much.

I played the first few up until the first boss until I hit level 7.  Initially I thought you had to level up each character, but it seems like the different characters just have different perks.  Some have different knife moves.  Like Chris has a wide area slash while Jill has her lame little poke.  I'm hoping some of the unlockable characters are good; the alt-costume for Jill is pretty lame.

I agree that Mercenaries is better because I preferred the arcade game feel.  Learning the levels, getting better each time, entirely skill based, and all that.  Plus in general the shooting and combat rhythm felt better in those other games (haven't played RE Mercs 3DS, but RE5 is probably the best for stomping and strafing).

I'm still not sure how to 'daze' an enemy ('daze' seems to be the word it goes with, as one of the perks in Raid is "40% more effective at dazing enemy").  When it happens, the leech tongue thing falls out of its mouth and you can run up to melee it.  Pressing it once seems to do minor damage.  If you hold the attack button and wait for it to launch automatically, it does something like 10 times the regular damage.

This is the first 3DS game I'm going to play in 2d.  In 2d it looks nice like a normal RE game with some AA and good IQ.  In 3d it looks jaggy and rough and the 3d effect in dark areas seems really shit and ghosting everywhere.  The 3d also doesn't seem to add anything at all.  Some games just don't need 3d I guess.

I've found that games that have very smooth / colorful texture work survive the 3D transition much better. Stuff that's dark and grainy and high-noise like RE, notsomuch.

As for the game and graphics, let's just say I want Jill to unlock my cock.

Will buy it after a year with my imaginary DS Lite.

Definitely.

Probably has a little to do as well with the 3DS screens being below average quality screens (LCDs?) with all the problems in dark areas that cheap LCDs have.  If they do a 3DS Lite in the future with 2nd analog and all, it'd be nice if they could use a better screen for the main 3D screen.

There are different control schemes.  I'm sure R+X is one of them.

I also picked up a Circle Pad Pro for this game and Rz (the second R button that gets added) is for firing, using control layout D.

The CPP definitely makes things smoother and is pretty comfortable.

episode 5 suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks

this game really needs a dodge or run button.  enemy behavior isn't the same as RE4/5, and even if you can move and aim now, you're so slow and the dodge mechanic isn't accurate enough to be an adequate means of defense.  and the fatalian asshole literally stands there not helping.  as the game ramps up the action the weaknesses are so much more obvious.  things like how levels are either an arena or corridor; only the first boss area had some interesting level design.

Is the combat just pew pew pew pew pew 20 bullets or so until 1 enemy goes down in this one?  I tried playing it like RE4/5 with the pew pew -> run up and melee and I couldn't find the melee.  Plus like you said, the run is really slow in this one.

The melee move rarely comes up and it's unpredictable like in RE4/5, where you just shot the knee.  Just shoot enemies in the face for crit damage.  It's not the same as RE4/5.

there's a weapon upgrade that 'dazes' an enemy faster, but I'm ~4 hours into the campaign and still haven't unlocked it.  It makes melee pop up more in raid mode.

I think you have to shoot certain areas, then use the knife for more damage and THEN melee comes up, but I never get the chance to do so.

I'm on Episode 9 now and shit is really beginning to get difficult.  What's cool is that there's still new enemies being introduced.

The Circle Pad Pro definitely helped.  Made holding the 3DS a hell of a lot more comfortable and let me circle-strafe in a few situations.

I just beat the game and it was overall pretty damn enjoyable.  There were one or two spots that frustrated me a bit (cheap deaths), but I just turned the system off for a bit, came back, and beat those sections.

I can't say much about the game without spoiling stuff, but one thing that's NOT a spoiler is that this game is a prequel to Resident Evil 5 and leads into in nicely, and I also assume that part of the ending ties into Resident Evil 6.

This game ended up being REALLY story-heavy, but still had enough action to balance things out.  I don't think it's as replayable as RE4 and RE5, but with Raid Mode there's not much of a reason to replay the campaign anyway, unless you're trying to unlock all of the mission-achievements.

I barely used 3D in this game, too.  Weird since I thought it worked really well in The Mercenaries 3D.

Story/game play spoilers for those who don't care:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
-During the boss battle on Episode 11, you're given four rocket launchers.  If you're quick enough and have enough ammo for your other weapons, you can keep one of the rocket launchers and use it on the game's final boss.  I read it's a one hit kill.  :o
-All of the main characters survive in the end.
-Keith goes to the African branch of the BSAA.  Is this is the same Keith who ends up biting in a helicopter in RE5 Desperate Escape?
-Footage of the very beginning of RE5 Lost In Nightmares is shown, with the epilogue saying that this is Jill and Chris's next mission.
-Parker meets up with Jessica in a scene after the credits and gives her a surviving T-Abyss virus vial.  I assume this is something for RE6?

I'm only doing an episode or two a day.  So if I just finished episode 7 (last bit was annoying) and there are at least 11 chapters, there's quite a bit more to play.  Not to do the ranking thing (but totally doing it), so far it's not as good as RE5, or nearly as good as RE4 (and REmake and RE2).  This is somewhere above RE3 and Zero, maybe CV.  It's moving away from what I liked most early on to just a lot of action.

What bugs me the most is how it's not as competently made as the other games.  It's hard to explain.  Other than the general roughness, it's a lot of bad decisions that are just annoying.  Like how the screen gets desaturated and covered in blood after a hit or two.  And in these games it's often best to save healing items for important points.  So I'm playing on a small screen, covered up to have less viewing space, and the frame rate starts giving out, and the dodge move doesn't register, and now I'm on the floor mashing Y.

There are a lot of things I like too.  Early in episode 7 I went exploring in old areas with new keys (since the boat is somewhat open) and didn't know how the game would repopulate the areas.  Turns out they just throw in an old boss as an optional battle.  I like that you venture off for ammo and return with less than before, but now you have some cool parts.  The weapon upgrade system is great too.

and I'm surprised by the reaction to the 3D.  Testing it out with the very super depth option it looked really nice.  I never play 3DS games in 3D because of the small viewing zone.
