PS2 had a lot of really good RPGs, but the PS1 is the RPG king.

Haha, yeah, I'm not sure what enticed me to buy it back in the late 90's, but it was an RPG on the PS1 so that was probably enough. It had an amusing sense of humor at times, but that's about all it had going for it.

Ps2 RPGs had better gameplay and more experimental mechanics.

PS2 RPGs also started the introduction of embarrassing animu filth, so, yeah, trade-off.

Someone clearly didn't play Tales of Destiny or Xenogears.

In Chrono Cross you turn into a furry. Ps2 wins.

ps2 might've had better games, but the ps1 was the golden era where jrpgs transitioned from "those weird games that never get translated" to the standard that all other genres borrowed from.  respect the classics

Made it more mainstream maybe... some of us played Thousand Arms

PS1 had a lot of cool rpgs that don't hold up at all anymore due to shitty load times, bad controls, awful framerates, and generally not-that-great battle systems.

PS2 had a lot of cool rpgs that still hold up very, very well with acceptable load times, good controls, solid framerates, and generally deep gameplay systems.

Xenosaga defined the RPG genre so PS2 is the clear winner.

The PS1 games that hold up the best are the 2d games.  Suikoden I & II still hold up extremely well, especially II which is amazing any time.

PS2 RPGs started the introduction of removing world maps and adding ridiculous amounts of padding and shitty voice acting. PS1 RPGs >>>>>>>>>>>>>> PS2 RPGs real talk.

Also, Arc the Lad 2 :bow :bow :bow

Front Mission 3:

Tales of Destiny 2 (Tales of Eternia):

I dunno how you gonna say PS2 introduced padded worlds when the entire child arc of BOF3 as well as Tales of Destiny (well, Tales of in general) are nothing but pad and shitty voice acting.
