I have to remember this cartoon's name or I'll die

One of my favorite shows when I was a kid, say 22 years ago, was a Japanese(?) made cartoon with
main characters that looked like the Moomins. It was set in the future, and involved space travel. The main character was basically searching for his girlfriend (or wife?). He encounters her a few times, but she keeps running away.

The show was dark and depressing, at least for a kid of my age at the time. Lots of weird alien planets, death, blood, cults, and events/scenes that were almost hallucinative in nature.

 I didn't get most of it, but i sure loved it. And now I want to rewatch it, I think it'll be interesting to see what used to bend my young feeble mind.

Any help would be appreciated.

In Saudi and it was dubbed in Arabic. (hint for Wrath: it aired on the Bahraini channel)

One of the most memorable scenes was one where an alien race committed mass suicide.

The characters as I pointed out earlier, looked like the Moomins, generally cow-ish. The main character was short and pudgy, the side kick was taller, and there was a third character from another species. They used to wear orange spacesuits, iirc.

I really need to see it again to verify whether I'm exaggerating or if all of these themes and events really existed in the show lol. I've been looking for it for a while.

Time to compare notes. Just by taking a quick look, I'm starting to realize that most of the horrors were probably cultivated inside my head. And now thanks to another site, I got the Arabic name as well, so I can watch it in that old depressing dub.

Anyhow, I knew I can count on you guys. The show aired for a very limited time and on one network, iirc, so not a lot of people remember it.

That clip reminded me of another American cartoon, one where random characters get together from different places (or other cartoons?). There was a monster truck, a basket ball player(?) and something that looked like Cool Spot. I remember liking the show but I rarely caught it from the beginning which which pissed me off.

TBH, aside from Robotech, the Fox Kids X-Men show was the first made for tv cartoon I ever saw that had a cohesive and coherent storyline. I don't remember if Batman: TAS had aired before X-Men.
