let's talk about the DS
« on: February 24, 2012, 06:25:07 PM »
we've had like 2 suggest me games PSP thread and at least 1 "what you think are the best games on PSP" so i think it's only fair if we do this

so what's your favourite DS game? mine obviously

this game it's on fucking PSX square level and show to me that in the sakaguchi/nomura double team, nomura was the important one,the music is simply awesome, the plot is pretty interessing and can be basicaly be descripted like a kiddie version of gackt, sure the battle system is kinda stupid with having to pay attention to both screens but most of the time you can ignore the top one and the touch screen combat is in itself different from your usual rpg

the thing that impressed me most in the game,it's is new game+ feature,TWEWY new game+ let you warp between any part of the game you want, best of all as you replay the game you get new hidden bosses and secret objectives which unlocks some more plot

I like TWEWY a lot, that and Devil Survivor 1 and Strange Journey are probably my favorites.  And Ouendan/EBA, can't forget those.

And I like Layton and Igavanias.

That's about it.  Lots of good games, but those were the standouts for me.  One of the first Nintendo systems where I can't think of any 1st party Nintendo games I cared about.  NSMB DS was barely decent, Mario Kart DS was solid, Metroid Pinball was a lot of fun.  But was there even a single AAA Nintendo game?

Best ds games:

DQ remakes
DQ9
SMT: Strange Journey
Devil Survivor
Phoenix Wright 1-3
Elite Beat Agents
Bangai-O Spirits
Contra 4
Broken Sword remake
Etrian Odyssey
Ghost Trick
Final Fantasy IV remake
Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes
Brain Training
Chrono Trigger ds
Rhythm Heaven
GTA: Chinatown Wars

I think that Igavania's were a let down on the ds. Dawn of Souls was easy as shit, like...completely brain dead. The other two are completely forgettable. There were zero great Nintendo games except Kirby: Canvas Curse and arguably Yoshi's Island 2. The system is great, but only at its own specific niche areas. Even the Wario Ware title wasn't that great.

That said, I need to catch up on some stuff. Still haven't played the likes of Pokemon B/W, Laytons, and Radiant Historia or even 999. Between the adventure games and the rpgs, DS is too much of a story-based system to my liking. I prefer arcade and pick up and play games and ds is lacking in that area.

Eh forgot Henry Hatsworth and Animal Crossing: Wild World.

Mega Man ZX was great for what it was, aside from the back tracking too, but once again, it was a step down from its gba predecessors. I can say that for almost every ds exclusive that had a game on the gba. Sad.

there are a lot of games I like on the DS and others I still need to get around to.  still don't like the hardware and think the disparity between hardware quality and content quality is massive.  but like I said, it had tons of great games.  tons of original or surprisingly great games (dragon ball origins, spider-man metroid games).  actually, the most disappointing games were the nintendo franchises.  nsmb, both zeldas, starfox, metroid, wario, and others have the worst entries on the ds.  mario kart and the kirby games were great, though.  another bitching point is the shitty gap when games used both screens to show a single image.

I certainly hope not.  I don't want any nice looking imports for the 3DS.  Chou Soujuu Mecha MG, Jump Super (and Ultimate) Stars, and the Ouendan games are some of my favorite DS games but Nintendo had to fuck that all up with the 3DS.  I have a bunch of other imports from Japan and Europe, like that Tingle game and Hotel Dusk 2 that I still gotta play.  Also some games I double dipped on like panel de pon, bangai-o, and some others.

some other stuff i would like to remember

trauma center - completly original, super hard, awesome to play
meteos - kinda okay but the menu music.... THAT MUSIC

they should have used this as smash bros brawl theme instead of that stupid chorus

another code - lot of original puzzles,i remember one where you have to clam your ds so you can see a code trough the reflection caused by two screens and another one that was solved simply by closing your DS
contact - a weird and wacky rpg a-la earthbound,i always tought this game was cut short of development because if you keep playing and grind the shit out of yourself you can find tons of neat secret but otherwise it's super short... i heard it got some sort of sequel which was stuck in japan land?
tingle - does this count as the last attempt of nintendo doing something offbeat with one of their IP? okay it was kind of frustating how you had to guess everything but still....
suujin taisen - a decent puzzle game, made by mitchell corporation, you get a bunch of stones with number and trails on them and connecting them in special manners score points, kinda like super domino, apparently it got a DSIWare rerelease? i didn't know that, here's a video

I wasn't into the normal Picross but found Picross 3D ridiculously good.

and because no one else mentioned it, the final fantasy chronicles rings of fate game was fun.  haven't played the sequel.

In terms of quality, I'd call Picross, Canvas Curse, and Advance Wars: DS very high/AAA/ultra-combo level fun.

But yeah, oddly the DS, for how great its library is, probably had the weakest first party titles of any Nintendo system.

Canvas Curse for sure.  Best Kirby game!

I can't think of a criteria that Pokemon couldn't be called AAA handheld games. SS in particular is the best Nintendo-published game for the system.

The rest of it was, as Oscar said, mildly disappointing, but I was just glad to have Pokemon in top form again after it had lost me with the GBA games.

Best DS games I've played, in order roughly

Ouendan, Ouendan 2, Elite Beat Agents
Trauma Center 1
Devil Survivor
Ghost Trick
999
Order of Ecclesia
Phoenix Wright 1
Ketsui Death Label (this game kinda became obsolete once the real Ketsui port came out though)
Dawn of Sorrow
Mario Kart
Pokemon Platinum (didn't play HG/Black)

I still need to play the Advance War series. Not that big into strategy games though, so they're low priority.
