I've never owned an ipad.  Not sure why I would need one other than to play the iphone games I don't play anyhow on a bigger screen for $500.

As someone that has owned an iphone since '08, I never thought I'd ever want or need an iPad until I bought one out of the blue last year.  Now I can't imagine going a day without it.  It's replaced my laptop and netbook as my portable browser.

Well, I don't have a laptop or a netbook either...

When I'm at work I have a computer.  At home I have a computer.  At my couch watching tv/playing a console, I have my iphone to check e-mail/websites.  When out I have my phone and it's not like I'm going to lug an ipad with me wherever I go walking down the street.  Pretty much the only use I see for an ipad is to internet browse and stuff in bed.  Which I already do on my iphone but it would be easier with a bigger screen.  And well, to play iOS gaming which I am not a fan of in the first place.

This is going to be a "buy first and then figure out why you like it" product for me.

I thought ipad was crap too but it was pretty fun playing with my sister's ipad 2.  Watching random videos or web surfing on the couch or while eating is exponentially better with an ipad than a smartphone. 

I still won't support Apple though.  If I'm gonna buy a tablet, it's probably gonna be something like a top of the line Asus.

But not really, if you can't afford/justify a $500 luxury item I doubt that $100 drop is gonna be the tipping point, especially if just saving up a bit longer gets you dat resolution and dem graphics. Most budget folks are probably still gonna keep their eyes on the Kindle Fire.

Also, MCD has a good point, most stuff is gonna be upscaled all to shit - text and pics will look great, games maybe not so much. Forget about the 16GB, file sizes are gonna be nuts.

i downloaded a bunch of android comic readers and the quality varied wildly

i wish comicrack would come to ios, it's the shit - there's even a setting that will automatically "trim" the white borders around a comic page to make the main image bigger, awesome feature for older comics

What stopped me from ordering my first ipad was thinking about this upscaling thing.  With the specs it has, there's no way most games will run native res unless they want to run at 5fps.  So stuff will be upscaled along with all the apps/games that aren't patched to ipad native and things might look kind of janky upscaled. 

Might still pick one up.  Not sure.  I think I'll wait until people get it and give some impressions before I decide whether to jump in on this model or wait for another.

google started their google play bullshit thing today and ran a .49 sale on a bunch of apps

i couldn't get dead space, need for speed, or n.o.v.a. 2 running - the android cm9 i am running on the touchpad has some compatibility issues, and i don't feel like fucking with editing the build prop. one cool thing about the android market is the 15 minute refund window. i did get world of goo and shadowgun, though. it's not a great game, but the graphics kind of made my jaw drop, and it ran really smoothly. if ipad xtreme can top that, then wow.

There's plenty of Japanese games on Japanese store.

But most major Japanese cellphone games (from Square, Namco, etc...) are still being made for shitty Japanese phones like Docomo.  I want iOS to start getting things like FFIV The After Years, Super Robot Wars M, etc... Japan needs to give up on all their other phone platforms and just makes iOS games when making phone gaming.

Something that bothers me about the pricing though; or rather, the options available.  Apps are going to be piss-ass large now due to the resolution, particularly games like Infinity Blade or Batman.  They should've dropped the 16 gig model (or just offered the iPad 2 at 16 and 32) for the decreased pricing model.  Then start the new iPad off at 32 gigs for its base model at $499.

Regardless, I'ma probably get the 32 gig wifi iPad.

It's really not. My iPad 1 was 16 GB. Apps are increasingly larger and larger. My 32 GB iPad 2 seems about right, with some management.

I think one problem I have with the cost is how it will be outdated in a year.  When I spend that kind of cash on a videocard or a console or something I know it's going to last me 3-5 years.  My iPhone's last me about 2 years and then they're totally outdated and I have to buy a new one to play the latest iOS games.  I can't afford to buy a $700 toy that I'll need to replace for another $700 every other year to keep up with the latest games and apps for it. 

The main reason I want an iPad is for business stuff because everyone I work with also busts one out at meetings to show documents and stuff.  Hell, I've seen attorneys at court use iPads in front of the judge instead of bringing a folder of papers.  It seems like a popular device with a lot of uses in the business world.  So I kind of want one.

Maybe I'll buy just 1 as an experiment and see if I like it enough to replace with better models in the future.  I guess reselling them helps lower the cost but I'm too lazy to resell things.  With my phones I just trash them or give them away when I get the newer models.

If it helps, my 1st gen iPad is still in constant use.  Battery life is still great, still in great shape despite never being put in a case or using screen protectors...if I got the same usable life out of a notebook, i'd be thrilled.

Plus, it's always useful to have extra devices around. I still use my old 3G iPhone a lot (as a remote, for the Sleep Cycle alarm app, for Skype calls over wi-fi, games for the kid...). In a house of 3 people all hungry for screens, I'll get a ton of use out of the iPad I already have even after the new one arrives.

I promise you if you buy this particular iPad, with the res bump, the beefed up cpu and quad core gpu, and 4G if you want it, you'll get PLENTY of mileage out of it.  Apple products really don't get great until the second or third iterations after major design changes, and once you get a good one, you'll be set for two years at least.  I'm still on a regular iPhone 4 and I can see myself with it for ANOTHER year before I jump ship to a 5 or even 5s or whatever it'll be called.

Not to be rude or presumptuous but based on your posting history I don't see why you would buy an ipad for gaming. It doesn't seem like it would be for you at all. The vita seems far more your speed.

As far as business I think yes an ipad can have some legit business uses but if I was serious about using one for business I would still most likely end up using some version of a laptop for that.

Ipads are great tweener devices. They do a bit of everything and do a wonder job with ios style gaming. They are great for surfing, podcasts, music, watching videos etc and other kind of lazy ass pursuits. It's the perfect lazy man's device for the 21st century. If that doesn't fit you then you probably shouldn't get one.

I say this with the opinion that I think an ipad is wonderful and for my uses has utterly replaced my laptop. But then I'm not demanding that it function as a psp/laptop and perform better than what those specific devices are good for.

Ok, bought a black (prefer white for aesthetic and less noticeable fingerprints, but someone mentioned that black is better for watching movies with black bars and it makes sense) wifi 32gig model.

I convinced myself by deciding to buy it as a shared item for the office.  Going to give it to my dad to use for work and home stuff and then I'll borrow it whenever I go on a trip or need it for work.  If I fall in love with it, I'll buy one for myself.

Well, the thing is I carry around a shit load of devices already that do most of that.  Like I have all my music on my phone which is always with me.  Can use that for podcasts too.  For games when I'm traveling I have a Vita/3DS/PSP/DS.  For Netflix, the Vita is pretty nice, though obviously a smaller screen than the iPad.  For books I have physical books because I prefer them to ebooks and it's not like I'm ever reading more than 1 book at a time so I can carry "a book". 

What I think the iPad will excel in, that none of my other portable products do or do as well is:

-Reading webpages
-Reading pdf/.doc files from e-mails 
-Creating a document/editing a document  (I'm assuming there are apps that let you edit .docx files?)
-Showing photos to people
-Reading comics or digital magazines

That's actually enough stuff, that, in addition to having Netflix streaming on a bigger screen and access to full screen-size iOS gaming, seems to make the iPad worth it from my perspective.

I think you won't see major bumps in resolution for a while since Apple has drawn a line with the Retina standard (the PPI needed at a certain viewing distance to make individual pixels indistinguishable). In the case of the iPad 3 its made to be viewed at almost arms length, where the iPhone 4s is much closer to your face. Screen size difference are also a factor of course.
