TBH he does have a point but he delivered his point rather crassly. Japan lost it's leader status years ago and i don't think they'll ever get it back. I'm old enough to remember a time when a game from a western studio was looked at suspiciously by most western gamers in fact many were seen as a joke and Japanese games ruled the roost unchallenged.

The broadband age has really screwed over Japan devs. The actual success of a western made console, also probably knocked less smarter japanese devs for six. Smart devs like Capcom saw what was about to happen and jumped on the Xbox 360 early. Internet connected gaming was going to grab hold hard. Add onto that loads of western PC devs coming over to the consoles and that sealed the deal. Most Japanese devs were left in the dust when the 'HD' generation started. Many still haven't caught up.

That being said there are a handful of Japanese studios still outputting quality games but even those don't sell much over here.

I think the reason this is getting more play on gaf is because he told a Japanese guy in a crowd for some indie dev documentary, it's about Japanese games on forum that voted MGS4 as GOTY twice, and the guy's ~~game~~ experience (pixel art 2D platformer) hasn't been released after half a decade of being shown.

That PC comment was also pretty dumb, and combined it's like someone who is way too nostalgic for the 80s. It's hard to imagine that both were real comments, so I'm assuming this is a character, like a lazy version of Bob of Bob's Game ~~fame.~~

I'm from the UK and speaking more from a Master System,NES, Megadrive, SNES viewpoint. The Commodore64 and Amiga etc i didn't have home access to :'(

The first time I've seen a trailer for this indie dev documentary was the moment I realized: "Man, that Fez guy is a total hippster". The reason I'm not looking forward to Fez isn't because he doesn't know how to behave himself, but because I've got the impression that he's more interested in pulling off some pretentious ideas instead of developing a game that is actually fun to play. I've got the impression that his priorities might be a little wrong; at least in regard to what I usually enjoy.

There's nothing wong with following pretentious ideas and Fez might very well be a fine game, I just don't think anymore that it's a game that I personally will enjoy.

I don't really know how anybody can say with a straight face that 100% of games coming out of a nation, especially one with a storied game development reputation like Japan, are shit. It's a completely disagreeable opinion. And a one hit wunderkind, I think that's what I find so frustrating about these muppets: They create one game/just have one mediocre idea and make some indie darling and think they are in a position to criticise the rest of the industry. It's not just western indie devs either, I remember the Katamari designer being pretty arrogant about how stagnant the industry was after his success too, but what has he made since? More Katamari and a mildly entertaining experiment and already he's moving on to making childrens playgrounds or something.
