I gotta believe that he's trying to precipitate a crisis now because it'll force Obama's hand during an election year, rather than next year, when if re-elected he could conceivably tell Netanyahu to go screw.
Apparently the growing numbers of hyper-Orthodox Jews and the big wave of post-USSR immigration are big factors in tilting Israel to the right, and there's no sign of it letting up.
