XSEED Games to Start Publishing on Steam

First two titles to be Ys: The Oath in Felghana and Ys Origin from developer Nihon Falcom

Torrance, Calif., (March 13, 2012) – XSEED Games, an independent-minded publisher, is proud to announce that they will be bringing Ys: The Oath in Felghana and Ys Origin, both from acclaimed Japanese developer Nihon Falcom, to PC on Steam. Ys: The Oath in Felghana will launch on 3/19 at a price of $14.99. More details on the launch of Ys Origin will be provided at a later time.

“People have been asking for Falcom’s great catalog of PC games to be officially made available in English for a long time,” said Jun Iwasaki, President of XSEED Games. “To start our new publishing arrangement on Steam with two standout entries from Falcom’s action-based Ys series, one of which has never been made available in English before, is an ideal situation for us, and we are excited about the future possibilities.”

Ys: The Oath in Felghana & Ys Origin
XSEED Games delighted RPG fans in 2010 and 2011 when the company published several Ys titles from legendary RPG developer Nihon Falcom to the PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system, and now Ys fans can celebrate once more as two of the series’ most revered titles, Ys: The Oath in Felghana and Ys Origin, are heading to PC as digital downloads via Steam.

Ys: The Oath in Felghana is an action RPG driven by fast-paced combat and paired with an intricate puzzle-filled world, and an enhanced port for the PSP system garnered many accolades when published by XSEED in 2010. This Steam release is true to the original Japanese PC release from 2005, but with added Steamworks features such as Steam Achievements and Steam Cloud support. The game follows the ongoing adventures of series hero Adol Christin and his trusty companion Dogi.

Conversely, Ys Origin serves as a prequel to the original Ys, and is the first Ys title not to feature Adol Christin or Dogi. This will mark the first time that the game, originally released in Japan for PC in 2006, will be officially released in English. Set 700 years before the first title in the Ys series, the game’s story focuses on the twin Goddesses and the mysterious Black Pearl made famous in Ys I & II, and follows the adventures of several playable characters as they ascend the menacing Darm Tower.

Oath :bow2

I got Origins a while back, but I'll buy it for Steam.  Xseed will probably buy the fan translation that game out last year.

You could start anywhere since the stories are loosely connected. If you were to choose one just go with the one releasing next week, Ys: The Oath in Felghana, since it's considered by many to be the high point of the series (though the other games are just as fun).

Ys: The Oath in Felghana comes to Steam this Monday, and we're ready to please worldwide gamers with its actiony goodness!

In addition to the $14.99 price point for the US market, we've also set prices of 9.99 pounds for the UK, 11.99 euros for the rest of the EU and 299 ruples for our Russian fanbase.

Other territories will have the price set automatically, but no region restrictions have been specified -- as far as we're concerned, this is a worldwide English launch.

To address other common questions we've been receiving as well:

- This release is based off of the original PC version of Ys: The Oath in Felghana, which means it does not contain the voice-acting or other additions present in the PSP version. It does, however, contain Steam achievements with unique icon art, leaderboards for story mode and Time Attack best times and Steam cloud support.

- Widescreen is supported, but as the game is designed for 4:3 resolution, all widescreen settings will result in a stretched display. We're looking into the possibility of at least partially addressing this via patch in the future, but as the game was originally programmed specifically for 4:3 displays, we would recommend using a full-screen resolution during your initial playthrough.

- Both Ys: The Oath in Felghana and Ys Origin natively support all Windows-compatible gamepads, and this is the recommended input device to use when playing the game.

Adventure awaits this coming Monday. Make sure you're ready for it! ;)

Good to see that this is going to be a little more than a straight up port.

I would have waited for a sale, but it's $15 and if they sell a lot (it's no.1 on the charts!) it'll convince them to release more Falcom stuff and maybe other J-rpgs on steam so I can pay a few bucks to support them.  Like I'd love it if they got Ys 6 (XSEED has said it's a possibility and they have a fully translated script ready to go) on steam since I never played it and I'm too lazy to install the boxed JP version I have.

I'm with Bebpo - torn between "I am not gonna play this now!" and "I should support it, it's just $15 and bringing JRPGs to Steam makes everybody happy"

Carpe Fulgur seems to have done pretty well releasing more obscure Japanese stuff on Steam, so there's definitely a market there for those kinds of games.

How has anything stopped you from "I am not gonna play this now" on Steam?

Does $15 bother you that much?

Let's be real, if you really wanted demi to love you again you'd gain 15 pounds.
