You fools, go buy this game right now.

http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/anachronox

It runs on the Quake 2 engine, has middling gameplay, and boasts an unsatisfying non-ending! What more could you possibly want from a weird RPG/Adventure hybrid?

Sounds better than Mass Effect 3!

Really though, it's irrestistably charming in so many ways. One of your party members is a shrunken planet of quibbling bureaucrats. Another is an over-the-hill comic book superhero. And you get to save defenseless stormtroopers from vicious ewoks.

Of course I won't be getting it as I'm so much realer than the rest of you and bought it back in the day, but now's the time for all you Johnny-come-latelies. Please, I mean no offense.

When I was a 15-year-old snot-nosed punk in high school, Tom Hall was kind enough let me into the Ion Storm offices, see the then in-development Anachronox, and have lunch with the Anachronox team. Now I make videogames full-time. :bow Tom Hall

I'm experiencing this story vicariously now. It's as if I'm really there.

I also remember visiting Ion Storm, seeing Daikatana (snort) in development, and then rolling over to the Tom Hall section of the company to get my MIND BLOWN by Anachronox.

BTW their refrigerator was labeled "Asnackronox"

Just bought this game. Didn't the producer of the game have his whole team play through Chrono Trigger before they started making this? If so, that's definitely something I can get behind...

Yeah it's strongly indebted to Chrono Trigger. The title suggests as much, but there's other stuff like having three-member parties, combo attacks (iirc) and enemies appearing "in the field."

The combat is serviceable but there's not much of it. There's a lot of walking around and talking to people, plus some slight puzzles and minigames. The worlds are varied and interesting enough to justify that.
