So, if true, why has SEGA held off on releasing them?

According to our insider, SEGA chose to sit on their release until it had a clearer picture of the future for the Shenmue franchise, namely, whether or not Shenmue III would ever see the light of day.

SEGA teased earlier this week that it “may be working on” an HD port of Shenmue.

An XBLA release has been rumoured since April 2010 when the game allegedly turned up on a secret developer test network.

I think people are going to be surprised to see just how badly this game has aged. Open world games have evolved so much from Shenmue's time, not to mention all of the QTEs, which are rightly reviled today. Shenmue pretty much embodies the very worst of open world style games, without any of the positives.

The only plus side I can see in this is that if these two games do well, we might continue to see further Sega HD re-releases. I'd kill for an HD version of Skies of Arcadia.
