What awfulness is this? the only good thing about it is the greatness that is Pyramid head.

Creepy atmosphere was good with all the fog and shit. But the gameplay is just atrocious, story is even worse. All the 2001 classics seem to hold up but man what a shitfest.

Nope, it was always a mess. The first one is far better and it has certainly not aged as well. The cult surrounding SH2 is creepier than anything in the game itself.

SH2 has no cult. SH2 is a horror game masterpiece. SH2 is also among the best written games of all time, if not THE best written game of all time. SH3 has better gameplay, great horror, but worse story because of the stupid cult shit. SH2 has the better story and characters, but worse gameplay, and far better horror. SH1's story is more ambiguous but the gameplay is far worse than even 2 and controlling it is a nightmare.

The horror genre was never really about "gameplay" until this generation when they made horror games into shooters.

I'm glad other people see that SH2 is overrated. That said, the one thing it has going for it is the story. The ending twist is pretty good for the boring journey there to be somewhat worth it. Too bad the gameplay (even when I played it one-two years after it released) wasn't good, and the damn fog was thick (though an art choice to prevent seeing loading textures and shit at the time) to where it's "tension" wasn't creepy, but annoying.

the gameplay is standard horror genre fare aside from combat. the only bad thing about combat is that stuff like the pipe are more useful than guns, but that's because it's silent fucking hill. the puzzles are endlessly well made and always manage to tie into the story.
