legend of grimrock
« on: April 05, 2012, 12:11:50 AM »
for personal computer and later ipad
coming out 6 days from now.
$12 US dollars if you preorder.  Normally $15.

buy here: http://www.grimrock.net/buy/

Buying from the website (goes through the humble bundle store) gives you a steam key and standalone installer.  you get the key right away and can register it as a preorder on steam; supposedly had steamworks and achievements and all that stuff.  community features like creating maps and stuff.

GoG version is DRM free.  Steam version is steam version, and you can't preorder yet, or at all.

videos with people talking over it:

(I haven't watched this one.  I'm just taking it from the gaf thread.  much better thread : http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=469066 )

I was going to post nearly the exact same thing, haha.

I kinda wish I hadn't went with a vanilla party, though.  My rogue seems to be dead weight and I would have rather had two mages in the back line.  :(

I also noticed there is an option for picking dungeons.  I guess there will be DLC in the future.

My first party didn't make it very far. I went with a fighter, a rogue, and two mages in the back. The mages can't do crap apparently until you get scrolls, but my fighter and rogue were doing alright until I got to the first skeleton warrior and he ripped me a new one.

you can use magic before finding scrolls if your mage meets the skill requirement.  I learned fireball way before I got the scroll just from messing with the casting menu.

that and a creation kit of some sort for community dungeons

one of the rogue's upgrades allow her to attack from the back.  for now I just gave her a spear, but that upgrade + affinity for daggers should make her more useful.

Looks a bit too twitchy and not enough looty for me.

Will give it a shot after I'm done with Avernum

It's not twitchy, you just move out of the way when a monster is about to hit you.

yeah, some enemies are much faster than others.  the rogue has a mean backstab attack that only really works on those slow ass guys in armor.  those small parasite guys who shoot poison blobs at you are some spry fucks and I'm constantly missing because he's on the next tile.

So I bought this because they helped the disabled kid.  It's not really my thing but will give it a shot tonight.  I never got into 1st person dungeon crawlers much.  Even EO kind of bores me after a bit.  The animations look good.

One thing I like about the combat is how much difference it makes whether you're in a corridor or a room. I got myself in trouble a few times trying to dodge those poison projectiles and there being nowhere to dodge to, or backing myself into a niche and being unable to get out.

Good thing I've got Avernum to play, then.  With Avadon/Avernum, this, and the BG ports the ipad is totally turning into an awesome old school rpg machine.

I suppose this wouldn't be terrible for the iPad since you mostly click on things. Is the new model powerful enough to render the game in full resolution with details set to high?

I like the atmosphere. SNAILS! MUSHROOMS! TRAPS! AAAAH!

They really ought to mix up the appearance (or at least the location) of the "hidden" switch though. So obvious.  :-\

I also blundered into heroically plunged down a trapdoor once and was surprised to find a mini dungeon down there, instead of being resurrected with less health somewhere nearby. I like that. I really really like that. Hopefully there will be some sort of rope or featherfall spell later on. I shall explore every nook and cranny of that dungeon!

Game's definitely worth the coinage so far.

Wish list: turn based mode and random dungeon generator for supreme time wasteage.

I misplaced one of those scrolls when I accidentally dropped it inside a teleporter. When I finally found it again and solved the puzzle I was very happy with myself until I realized what I'd just triggered.

im kinda stuck i think? im at level 2 and there's an area where i have a blue crystal in the center and two branching paths. both paths get me a key. i get both the keys and then open the door to a teleporter. the teleporter takes me to a room with a locked gate and some plant monsters on the other side. i cant see a way to get by the gate.

I don't remember that particular problem, but I get stuck every fifteen minutes or so. Look around for switches, pressure plates or notes with hints written on them. If you can't solve it, take a break for a few hours then try again. I've made it to the 10th floor without having to use a FAQ.

I've yet to discover any bugs in the PC version. What's the fighter's challenge? Playing with a party of only fighters?

It's a place you access by finding a secret in level 6. It drops you in the middle of a big room with like 20 to 25 of those green lizard creatures that pound away at you from all sides. The name of the place is very apt because my rogue and mage survived for about 30 seconds. Kept my fighters alive by mixing potions on the spot, got a cool shield out of it.

Oh yeah, that was pretty hectic. I have two fighters in the front and they do a decent job of absorbing damage. In retrospect I would have preferred replacing one of them with a monk focused on evasion and unarmed combat.

Put in a little over an hour today and I like what I've seen so far. Got my mage casting some fireballs [with his sweet staff] and my fighters on the front are bashing away with a machete and a polearm, my thief's not doing much in the back, though.

I know there's something awesome in the "Enter thy grave" room, but no way can I beat that setup. :(

Give you thief the polearm so he can attack from the back. When the first soldier comes out try to get in the hole he came from so you can only fight one soldier at a time. Consistently use all you attacks and fire magic and switch you team members from the front to the back if they get low on health. You should be able to get through it with this set up.

Dungeon Editor looks nice.

I'm not one to make levels but it looks easy enough for others to make cool levels/campaigns to play.
