yeah, bought it and got that artbook too.  played about an hour, was actually just going to make a thread to ask a question.

I played for an hour or so.  Got a sidequest saying I needed to go to a lab, which was also where the arrow was pointing.  I go there, a cutscene plays, and now I'm playing as a girl.  Do these sidequests go away or is there a point when I can just go off in a party and kill monsters and explore and stuff?

So far it seems pretty cool.  It cuts out a lot of fat from jrpgs and rpgs in general.  I like that I don't need to return to the quest giver for the quest to be completed.  First thing I did when I reached that town was jump off the edge and just run around.  There were these level 70 things rushing to attack me so I hauled ass out of there, then realized I was probably too weak to take on these guys with Shulk (?) alone so I fast traveled back to the entrance.

also, game is kinda ugly but no loading and hugeness make up for it.  and the brit voices are bad bad.

If they're higher than you, you aren't meant to go there. The game is very open on where you can't go.

Quests that will expire will be labeled as such. There's so much quests that it really won't become an issue, but if it really bothers you, there are quest guides online. Honestly unless you're ADD riddled, I would just play at your own leisure. I broke over 80 hours just playing normally at my own pace.

I've had the PAL release for a few weeks, sitting on the floor. I'll finish up the games I've started and get to it when I've got nothing else going on.

Play on USB Loader!

The voices were irksome for some for me, but I grew to not hate them. I rather enjoyed them. I like Shulk's VA the most I think. Dunban's as well.

I'm not going to do every quest.  I already have like 15 and most are MMO style "kill x number of monster."  Just wondering if this game jumps between characters or if I'm still in the introductory phase and eventually Shulk is my main while this girl and that Reyn guy tag along, and then it opens up.

already installed and am playing on usb loader.  usually do that with all new wii games (last one was 5 months ago...)

I just switched to Japanese voices.  I don't mind bad VA and prefer English because  I can sit at my computer while they talk about the power of friendship or whatever, but oh god the accents are so strong.  So many Fs in the wrong places.

You are still in the intro phase. When you get Monado and some shit goes down, then the game "starts" - and you will ALWAYS play as Shulk (you can choose who the playable leader is though when you get more people)

so far this is great.  everything is so fast and there's nothing weighing you down to get bored.  if I didn't have to wake up early tomorrow, I'd probably play all night.

switching back and forth between Japanese and English, the Japanese is better but it is more convenient in English and it's not as bad as I initially thought.

Doing every quest in this game is a recipe for madness. The game is much more enjoyable just doing what you can do while exploring, anything else that seems interesting and then continuing on and abandoning the rest.

I liked the quests and it was fun doing them all.  But at times it definitely got tedious on some of them.  Plus if you do them all it'll take you 120 hours to finish it and that's a lot of time.

a lot of quest boils down to killing X monsters, they basicaly solve themselves while just dicking around... the real pain in the ass is finding the NPC that give the quests,so really just don't start wandering around the city like an idiot and you'll be fine

yeah, after the monado I'm walking around colony 9 and every two feet there's another quest.  one of them is: go talk to debt collector; uh, are you going to tell me or do I need to run around until a red exclamation point shows up on my mini-map? it doesn't seem worth it.  again, the other quests are MMO crap like collect x flowers or kill x monsters or kill x special monster.  the frequency of these quests without much reward just makes seem like a pain.

side quests and no control over squadmates are the two bitter points so far.  those enemies you could only kill with the break > topple combo got annoying since Reyn wouldn't do his move.  I'm sure he was in cool down, I didn't have a way of knowing that so I wasted my topple attack.  the only way seems to be a chain attack but that takes a while to charge up, and there are some rudimentary commands like focus or spread out.

though I'm glad that Shulk (me) has the healing ability.  No waiting on a Eugene who's too busy being a fucking asshole.

The real reward for sidequests is getting the town to 5 star so you get the best trade items and final hidden weapon quests and stuff.

The exp doesn't hurt either.  If you do all the quests before heading to the final boss you're destroy him but if you don't you might have to grind to beat him.

ugh, do you have to do every sidequest to get to 5 star? even if I wanted to do them, I think I'd have to jump between different times of day to find the right person to talk to.

Honestly I wouldn't bother with the sidequests.  The pacing of the game takes foreeever and yeah you have to keep doing sweeps through every single town at night/day at every star rank to make sure you found them all.  Plus a bunch are timed so you can't even wait until endgame and then do them all.  Just do the ones you come across if you want as you play through the story.  The best part of the sidequests is they make you fully explore every area and sometimes take you to places you didn't even know existed because they're a bit hidden.  But yeah, just do what you want.

I like exploring and finding ream level monsters knowing that I'll return later and and wreck their shit.  I don't like "go back to this cave you were just in and do these monotonous tasks;" Xenoblade seems to be doing a lot of that.  Quick travel makes it a whole lot more bearable but if it gets annoying or confusing I'll just move on.  It's just weird for how progressive this game is (relatively) for it to have a quest log bordering on broken.

everything else is great.  well, combat isn't great, but it's good enough.  just overall it's great.

also, the music is nice

The battle system is pretty good for being realtime.  It's like FFXII with a little more depth imo.  It'll open up more later on when you have to pick your crew and their active attacks.

It's fine and all, but I'd like more control.  Either pausing the action to issue commands, defining behavior, both like dragon age, or simply assigning attacks (or combat styles) to L2+Dpad.

i like the game, its fun, but don't know how long it can be fun and interesting. it seems like just from 4 hours of play I have almost all of the basic starting moves now i just get more monadno moves? I dunno.

It's only sold through gamestop/nintendo.com, so it will probably be hard to find eventually.

its cool how huge the fields are for world buildin n shit but man oh man the movement speed is slow.  frequent quick travel points help, but even so it's minutes of holding up on the analog stick to get places.

what's really cool is seeing a gigantic lvl 70 monster, getting a flashforward saying you gonna die if you don't run, and then running.
