I know PD is going to call this a magical negro film, but it doesn't look like one to me and I want to see it badly.

I think this is technically a magical Negro film but it's a mutation of the usual professorial/folksy style.

It looks more like a magical cripple film, which may be a new genre.

I like how the black man is in a position of power, yet also a servant.  So deep.

This movie made more money in France than Avatar or Titanic.

I'm moving to France.

Yeah.

It looks too sappy and obvious as a movie for my tastes, but I still find it pretty impressive it made over 300 million dollars so far (160+ millions in France).

Vanity Fair (US) already called it a racist picture, *sigh*.
Perhaps the states are extra uppity about racisl issues for some reason? :P Lots of awards in that trailer so this could do well on the fart house circuit but a mega blockbuster it's probably not going to be over here. Most likely will take off on home release ala Life is Beautiful et al.

It's not magical negro, it's another film about a black person (in a servant or help role) becoming friends with their white boss. I don't think it's racist, I just find it odd/funny that these are pretty much the only types of films white people seem to like that feature non-Will Smith/Denzel Washington black people in big roles.

Can't wait for the American remake, set in the 1963 Alabama!

I read a French film critic saying how he thought it was obvious that this would be called racist in the United States because we have so many racial issues but in enlightened euroland it was just a film about 2 people.

I was like :wtf

Now if they'd cast a gypsy in one of the lead roles...

does a magical negro actually have to be magical in order to fit the category?  I always thought of it just as a mentor roll, but I guess the characters in Green Mile / Bagger Vance / Bruce Almighty were literally magical beings that helped white people along.  Clarify PD.

For the most part, you're correct. But it's not really always the case. magical negro also refers to black characters who help the white people see the error of their ways and become better people. have you seen the blind side? while not technically magical negro, it does appeal to a subset of white guilt.

Why do you Americans see everything as racial? In Europe, we just ban people from practicing their cultural and religious views, which of course, has nothing to do with race. You Americans are so clueless and superficial.
