doesn't skydrive and other similar services have a file size limit of around 50megs and will automatically compresses any audio or video files you upload even if its well under the said limit

that's how it at least worked with skydrive when i used it for the first time a few weeks ago. completely useless.

This should really be the subject line

Starting today, we are now offering:

Ability to upload large files – up to 2GB – and folders using SkyDrive for the Windows desktop or SkyDrive for OS X Lion.

oooh, iOS app too, this is fuckawesome

The SkyDrive web app is really handy but the desktop one is gonna rule. I use Dropbox all the time but the size limit drives me nuts. Having said that, if SkyDrive still has the (50mb?) filesize limit, it could be annoying.

awesome. The web one def. stopped me from uploading things much smaller than that but if that has been raised, I will be using the crap out of this for moving stuff to and from the iPad.

This only seems to install to the OS drive, on which I will never ever ever EVER have 25gb free so a bit fucking useless? I suppose I can use junctions to workaround but how fucking stupid are they not to offer a choice of install directories like every program in the history of programs?

Dropbox doesn't (didn't?), had to hack up a bunch of symlinks for that reason.

can't remember how I did it but I have always had Dropbox on my D drive rather than C (I have a tiny SSD for the OS, and like 7TB of various other drives...)

I haven't tried it myself yet, but it says in the article that

You can also customize the default root of the synchronized folder (to use a different drive, for example), and this option is available during setup of the SkyDrive app.

was this not there for you?

I think it does allow you to select a location for the Dropbox "folder," that's what I assumed you meant with SkyDrive.

I remember hosting all my podcast eps on SkyDrive in the yesteryear, when it was in that "Wow Microsoft has basically forgotten about all the Windows Live stuff."

no, it just stuck it on C: without asking. I'm all for simple installs but ffs.

Uninstalled and re-tried it but it did the same thing. It also creates a 'SkyDriveTemp' folder on C: as well.

Oh well, no biggie. Will try again when they get their shit together.

Can you mark off existing folders as skydrive accessible, or do you have to drag stuff into the sky drive folder like Dropbox?

It's been de-Meshed and Dropboxified.

don't worry, it'll be de-SkyDrived soon enough, this being Microsoft

I'm having no joy with this at all. Shame. It also sounds like there is no option NOT to sync, meaning that it will push your 25gb (or whatever) of files to any PC or Mac you install it on. Which might be exactly what you want, or might destroy your bandwidth for the month. Needs a little tweaking I think.

I'm done with my skydrive and dropbox. I'll be moving my data over to google drive when it launches, just easier to manage all my shit from one login.

Google drive price tiers

Select a plan:
05 GB ($0.00 USD per year)
20 GB ($5.00 USD per year)
80 GB ($20.00 USD per year)
200 GB ($50.00 USD per year)
400 GB ($100.00 USD per year)
1 TB ($256.00 USD per year)

OK, I finally installed this. You CAN change the folder location and the button to do it is right there in the setup sequence, but the layout of the screen that prompts you to change it is a bit odd and I can see how you might go right on by it without noticing that you can change the folder location.

For me the install process is entirely automated once I run the .exe. I did it 3 times so pretty sure I didn't miss anything. Just goes straight into 'installing..' and then it finishes without asking for any input from me. This could well be because I already had Live Mesh installed and it just kept those settings I guess.

Hmm, I also had/have Live Mesh installed and it still prompted me.

BTW, anyone know of a good third-party replacement for Live Mesh? I like the SkyDrive app but some of the features it dropped (ability to selectively sync certain folders only on certain PCs) are features I'd still like to have for certain things. I can keep on using Live Mesh but not sure I want to if it's dead code walking.

Over the past months, we’ve shared our approach to building versatile personal cloud storage that can scale to a billion people. Today, we’re excited to announce the next step towards that vision, and how this brings the SkyDrive desktop apps out of preview:

SkyDrive.com - New, modern design for desktop and tablet browsers with instant search, contextual toolbar, thumbnail multi-select, drag-and-drop organization, and HTML5 sorting
SkyDrive for Windows desktop & OS X - Faster uploads for people around the world and tons of bug and performance improvements under the hood
SkyDrive for Android - A new app that lets you access, upload and share from Android phones
SkyDrive for developers – Apps built using our SkyDrive API can now store or access any type of file in a person’s SkyDrive, plus there's a new, easy-to-use file picker API for websites (similar to our file picker for Windows 8 apps)

With these updates and continued improvements to our back-end infrastructure, we’re excited to leave preview and unlock new possibilities for a billion customers with the upcoming releases of Windows 8, the new Office, and tons of devices and apps that connect to SkyDrive.
