I'm no expert on dubstep, but basically the current dubstep wave is pretty different from where it started out. The beats are similar in rhythm, but the basslines changed from deep and subby, stuff that you can barely hear on laptop speakers to those high, overdriven, modulated and aggressive basslines ("Brostep"). It's origins are deeply rooted in the UK scene. Some english producers started to do these more aggressive basslines (Rusko for example) and things got turned up to 11 by american producers (like Skrillex or Nero).

It started with stuff like this

Got more aggressive

And then developed into the current wave like Skrillex.

The original dubstep wasn't very popular in  europe outside of the UK, however, the brostep sound is also very popular now in Europe, especially with a younger crowd, from 16 - 25. Basically dubstep went UK -> USA -> Europe/Rest of the world.

To me the current dubstep sound is electronic music for people that don't normally listen/dance to electronic music, but I'm a bit of a snob.

Haha yeah I just didn't see the thread yet. I'm not big on dubstep at all, it's fun to listen to every now and then but like Chinner I much prefer deep house as well. I'll have to go through this thread again when I'm not at work and check out all the links...

But it's seriously amazing how popular electronic music in the states is nowadays. When I first started getting into the genre, people would give me the weirdest look when I told them I listened to house.

Basically if you don't like doing drugs you won't like dubstep, that's all there is to it.
I can buy that, I feel like that's the case for a lot of niche music genres.

Really? Even in terms of electronic music, I think deadmau5 (deservedly) gets more hate than Skrillex. Since deadmau5 is much more of a jackass to people. From what I've seen, Skrillex mostly gets hate for being the figurehead of an obnoxious genre of music (brostep).

if you want to make a joke about a mediocre electronic musician in your CBS comedy you'll pick Skrillex

I tried listening to some Deadmau5 and his music is utterly unremarkable in every way. Just generic techno. Think he got over due to wearing a stupid mask on his head. Glad to see some proper dubby stuff got posted here, the eerie atmospheric burial/digital mysticks(sp?) type stuff is fuckin' awesome, the wub wub shit is lame. It's not like bending and distorting pieces of a track is a new thing. Here's a nice old example that isn't as bassy but still the same thing:

Why this is considered to be a new idea by anyone is baffling to me. Think it's due to a lot of the kids digging this wub wub stuff not knowing shit about the genre and being a bunch of nubs. :gun

I don't like Skrillex music, but I have to give him credit that he at least put his own spin on a certain sound, which is a thing you can't say about 99% of electronic music producers, be it 'real' or more pop oriented genres.

His legions of fans that act like he is EDM's personal jesus are crazy obnoxious tho.

As far as kids saying "Where does it drop?" when I posted the Aphex Twin song on Facebook... I wouldn't say it's appalling, but it is weird to me. There are a couple things you have to realize. One: The people commenting on Facebook have opinions that are really loud and, a lot of times, those opinions are considered more than they need to be. There's a broader general audience. But the really opinionated people always want to defend or offend: "Fuck you, it's the fucking Aphex! Skrillex should never..." Then there's the other guy that's like, "Dude! There's no drops!" But I know every break and hit to "Flim" verbatim; I've listened to it more than any other song in my whole life.
Yeah. If we're posting the stupidest dubstep mixes we can my vote goes to this:

I like electronic music, but usually of the New Age/Ambient or 80's/chiptune variety. So, I basically only care about this tiny sliver of the entire genre.

This one got a lot of play on Sirius XM actually. Very good song:

I will tell you, I'm addicted to these big rolling-bassline melodic/techy deep house tunes (Crosstown Rebels, Culprit, Hot Creations, etc), even if artists like Maceo Plex are everywhere at the moment. Definitely pushes all my buttons!

Chinner and Fifstar, let's hijack this thread and turn it into a deep/tech thread:
