It's two fairly short boss battles. It's kinda hard to get a sense of it because the fights are pretty easy. I mean it seems fun enough but there is so little content in the demo it's hard to say something meaningful.

Pretty mindless demo. I just stood behind the Chimera and slashed it to pieces using the health herbs every once in a while...the Griffin smashed down beyond the demo borders and I said fuck it and turned it off.

Its no Demon's Souls for sure.

I'll agree that the demo was a little underwhelming but I still have the game pre-ordered. "Why?" you ask...well I'll tell you. Sometimes when I see a preview playthrough I just get a 'spider-senses tingling' vibe that captures my attention for a title. It happened with Demon's Souls and Valkyria Chronicles (which I both really, really liked) and out of nowhere for this game when that OXM guy was doing his playthrough. Maybe it will actually suck but since I had $20 credit from Amazon for my XIII-2 preorder I had few qualms about plunking down for this.

From the IGN review:

Quote
Big fights cause slowdown that can freeze the screen for seconds at a time on the Xbox 360 version. Dragon’s Dogma runs much better on the PlayStation 3 than on the 360, with a smoother frame rate and fewer streaming problems; if the 360 version is your only choice, a hard disk install is mandatory to make the game playable.

Why does it sound like the reviewer didn't play the game installed on 360?  Others are saying the frame rate is clearly better on the 360 version (30fps vs. 24fps with drops) too.

IMO, games shouldn't be reviewed from an "installed disc" standpoint. It should be noted if there is a difference, though. So if the IGN reviewer played it without install then it is a legit complaint.

It's pretty fun -looks like ass in spots and would greatly benefit from a PC release, but who knows with Capcom- but it really should not be compared to Skyrim.  The game feels more like an open-world Monster Hunter crossed with Dark Souls.

So Capcom makes PC versions of almost all of their other MT Framework games (SF4, RE5, DR2, LP1/2) yet the one that would benefit the most from a PC version is not getting one?  Bleh.

Hey Fortus when you beat it please post the time it took you, thanks.

I'm probably not a good gauge on play length. If I like a game I tend to dick around A LOT exploring nooks and crannies which means whatever time the "average" player takes to finish something I usually end up doubling it. Also I restarted once and am thinking about restarting again because you can trigger main story events which sort of sweep you forward and make some of the quests you had impossible to finish. What I can say is that it looks like I'll be playing this for quite a while as it has NG+ and three different starting classes to playthrough as

I'm a little curious about this game since all of Capcom's internal staff has been making it for years and in the past I have liked internal Capcom games.  The fact that it's SP only though turns me off a lot because I've tried Monster Hunter SP and it was really boring.

But then I heard it's sort of like Dark Souls and DS single player is utterly engrossing and amazing.  But I also heard the combat and balancing and atmosphere aren't as good as DS.

How does the game differ from SP Monster Hunter?

I'll probably grab this (and Asura's Wrath) when it drops in price since there's no PC version.

I rented this for 360 and it's pretty awesome! IT reminds me of Demon/Dark Souls in a way.

Basically it's "multiplayer" in the sense that you summon the characters of other players and they act as NPC teammates in your game with their gear and skills. You don't actually play side-by-side, you just use their dudes.

How does the game differ from SP Monster Hunter?

Dragon's Dogma was designed as a single player game.  While some elements of the game feel like Monster Hunter, the two do not play the same and DD is an open-world action/adventure game.  You're not wandering around barren areas looking for one monster...you're in a huge world with towns and dungeons and the like, and there's enemy encounters all over the place.

I would say that it does feel like a more-accessible version of Dark Souls.  Combat is much smoother (I love how quickly you can transition between the multiple attack stances and melee/ranged weapons) and faster in comparison, but DD also feels a lot easier to me so far.

Also I don't think that DD should be compared to games like SKyrim.  Yes, they're both open-world fantasy RPGs, but the game play is completely different and DD has far less of a story focus...it's all about the action.

Well. I've been playing this pretty much non-stop since it arrived. I have well over 100 hours logged and still haven't "finished" the game. Don't want to spoiler things but it seems the choice I made when finally facing the Dragon (he offers you two options...or at least he offered my toon two options, might be different depending on how you play things) has some consequences that need to be addressed. Not going to "hype" the game but I definately recommend it

Well, it's like EuroJank RPG + Dark Souls + Skyrim. If you're the sort of person who flips out over the latest Bethesda RPG, buys EuroJank RPGs at full price despite poor reviews, and thought Dark Souls was one of the greatest games of the generation, then Dragon's Dogma is a game you want to have in your collection.

Here's what I like:

-Huge world to explore, lots of little areas to find
-Good sense of scale in the environment [some places look HUGE]
-Lots of equipment and equipment upgrading
-Lots of quests to do
-Pawn system is a nice touch
-Combat is fluid and fast-paced
-Game looks nice, graphics aren't the best ever but it's supported by some good design
-Doesn't try to force too much story and too many cutscenes
-No enemy scaling, so you can stumble on an area where you will get totally slaughtered if you're not careful

Here's what I don't like:

-Some enemies just aren't very fun to fight
-Enemy variety feels kinda limited
-Camera gets in the sometimes

For me, this is absolutely my favorite kind of game and something that I can probably sink 50+ hours into easily.

I like it, but it has many flaws. But I somehow just can't stop playing it. Already spent almost 50 hours with this game.
Spent probably 10 hours just traveling from A to B. Traveling is such a pain sometimes. You can only teleport back to the main city. You'll have to revisit all the other places on foot. And teleporting is fucking expensive too. I've read that you can buy portcrystal landmarks in NG+. But that's too late. And they seem to co 200k gold a piece.:-\

The game somehow feels unfinished. It's pretty bare bones. But it still mananges to be good.

What I'd like to see in the sequel:

- Better fast travel mechanism
- Better menu. The current one is pretty messy.
- Better quest menu. It's not always clear if the current quest you're doing is a main quest or a sidequest.
- The worldmap is pretty huge. But there's no variety. I want to see more variety in the environments.
- Weather system. It's always summer in the game.
- More enemy variety
- Better system for searching specific pawns
- A better told story. It can compliment the game universe. Games such as Nier or Drakegard had some really weird and obscure stories. Those stories made the whole gameworld pretty interesting. DG lacks any of that.

I like the graphics. The game can look pretty stunning at times. Especially dungeons. The lighting is pretty good.
The difficulty is acceptable. You're just probably using the wrong vocataion or wrong pawns if you suck at this. I personally keep my pawns balanced.

My team:

I went from Fighter>>>>Assassin>>>>>Mystic Knight. I think I'm keeping Mystic for now. I like the melee/magic combo.
Main pawn is a sorcerer
Mage Pawn for curing and positive buffs
and another sorcerer pawn with different skill tree for extra damage

Basically a sorcerer team. I've breezed through the game with this set up. Finished the game at lvl 46.

After finishing the game:

Been using the archer/ranger class, but thinking of switching to mystic knight.

I like that the enemy levels don't scale.  Makes exploring feel more fun and dangerous at times.  Have stumbled upon some crazy areas that I look forward to returning to later on.

Small hint for those just starting out: There's a shortcut to the Shadow Fort directly west of the main city on the map.  You go through mines to get there and there are enemies inside -including some that you probably want to run right past when you're first starting out- but it's much faster than the long way, which is also filled with some nasty enemies.  I saw a dragon walking around near the fort.   :o

-Enemy variety feels kinda limited

You'll encounter a larger variety of enemies as you get further into the game.

Finished it today. Also beat the hardest optional boss in the game. Took me 59 hours to beat the game, that's including post game. But I didn't do all the sedequests.

Wanted to start a New Game+. But unlike Demon's and Dark Souls, the game doesn't scale the difficulty. So I'll have to play the whole game overlevelled. LAME. Not really interested in that.

But yeah, it was a fun ride.

Digging the game, although it has some problems. Kinda like demons souls where the systems are either explained poorly or not at all. There is a lot of meat to the game apparently. Graphically it's a total mixed bag.

Dragon's Dogma is one game that desperately NEEDS a sequel. Some games, like Bioshock or Mirror's Edge, are perfectly fine as stand-alone experiences, but DD could just be so much better if some things were smoothed out and expanded on.

With the money Capcom had to throw at it I'd be really surprised if they don't reuse/harvest assets to create at least 1-2 games. They already stated they want to turn it into a franchise (i.e. we want to recoup losses), and I can totally see them releasing Dragon Dogma G (or something of the like) in a year. Handheld ports would be sweet as well.
