Gaming news is boring
« on: April 25, 2012, 04:44:20 PM »
It's all pretty dull lately.  New Mikami game that's 3 years away and has some art?  Cool, will care in 3 years.  Fire Emblem sells a lot?  Good for FE, it's fun series.  More developers hating on Wii U?  Who doesn't at this point.  Vita has no games?  What else is new.  Dead Space 3 announced?  Big surprise.

I dunno, I think I need a new hobby as following the game industry has gotten really boring lately.  Playing games is still fun, but I need something to browse while on the internet and with gaming news leaving me dry and off-topics being kind of slow lately I am getting bored of the internet.

Well that's because we're little more than a month away from E3... I'm sure companies are saving blowing their load for the big show. Though I'm surprised there hasn't been any real Sony leaks lately.

Then again I've been pretty bored with gaming news too, we need some new megatons to shake shit up.

The whole concept of games "journalism" is farcical to begin with.  If you're someone who takes it seriously, you're also probably someone who liked ICO.

Gaming journalism died with the Symposium: http://shawnelliott.blogspot.com/2008/12/symposium-part-one-review-scores.html

It was a death by group autoerotic asphyxiation: they hung themselves while jacking themselves off.

Is it better than CR1?  I tried picking that up again when I was sick in bed and I got like 1 dungeon further but got bored again and dropped it.  There was nothing too wrong about it but it just wasn't a compelling game that made me want to get further in the story.  Is CR2 more like a real rpg?

It does SO MUCH MOREEEEEEEEEEE than CR1, it is a sequel by any meaning. But... it still follows the same format - hub area, different "levels" - etc.

But they nerfed stuff, improved stuff, made it easier to use... it's worth the $20, better quality than most DS/PSP games.

two questions

1. do the areas have more stuff to do than solve shitty puzzles and find random treasures?

2. does the game recycle content as much as the 1st or does it have as much original content as a standard jrpg would have?

two questions

1. do the areas have more stuff to do than solve shitty puzzles and find random treasures?

2. does the game recycle content as much as the 1st or does it have as much original content as a standard jrpg would have?

They removed puzzles, there's now silly little "celestial rooms" that have random treasures. You need to use certain people, who have special skills, to navigate these rooms (they are marked as such so you know who is needed) - but this is only necessary to get treasures.

They recycle by blocking passageways off due to story, which open as you progress in the game.

You can also use different party members at any time (but can only take 2 in the field) - but they force certain members on you when you get to a story sequence (this is also marked as such) for a boss fight.

One of the new things they added is a PUB system, where you can do missions that involve fighting enemies, doing a fetch quest... which give you rewards.

All the graphics are improved, easily noticable after Omega/CR1.

They included Limit Breaks, and Summons (which is more of a Pair Limit Break).

The Gene system is different, where you have to grind and unlock the skills, rather than randomly earn them. You also cannot equip the same person with the same genes, only one per person.

Equipment has different stats, instead of constantly increasing. There are also accessories that give you skills or special stuff (resistance to poison, etc.)

It doesn't follow anything from the original CR1 for story, so you don't have to play them. I could be surprised though.

They fixed the whole "Turn Break" system, instead of finding yourself getting your asshole pummeled because the meter is Red, you and the enemy only get 1 turn that increases your strength, then it resets.

it's April.  one of those months where everyone is just digging into a backlogged title or an old favourite or something while they wait for bigger releases.  one of those months right before e3 so the companies are mostly sitting on their news.

I mean, I'm playing Ys 6 and Etrian Odyssey 3 right now.  I'm pretty sure I'm the only one on this forum playing those two games right now.  Not much to talk about there.

Stratum 3?  The molten caves?  You mean that big robot boss?  I took him down in one go.

My party is Hoplite/Ninja, Gladiator/Buccaneer, Monk/Princess, Princess/Farmer, and Zodiac/Ninja.  Hoplite used Line Guard and Bodyguard to cover defense, Gladiator smashed with her club, Monk kept everyone healed and when she wasn't busy with that, smashed with her club, Princess buffed and put Ice (boss's weakness) on the Gladiator's weapon, and assisted with items where needed, and Zodiac cloned himself and fired dual Ice magic at the boss.  When he charged up his attack, I just made sure everyone was healed and blocked (well, the Hoplite did Line Guard).  Not even the Zodiac died.

I mean, he wasn't easy or anything, but he followed a really rigid pattern and had an easily-exploited weakness.  If I had needed to go at him a second time I would have just equipped my guys with Bash charms to turn that big attack of his into a dead fish.  As for it taking five minutes to reach him, if you have all the shortcuts unlocked and use that skill that stops random attacks, it's more like two minutes.  And you can bring tents to completely heal up just before him, too.  You need to stop being such a baby, man.  You'll grind for hours to unlock dumb shit in other games, but have to walk to the boss again when you die and it's the end of the world because Atlus made it.

Anyway, I'm futzing around in the fourth stratum right now, just finishing up quests and stuff.

yeah i mean the big robot boss,i had a similiar party but i used a ranger and one of those binding guys instead of a zodiac and a hoplite, since my experience with etrian odyssey 2 indicated that bindings = OP,hoplite = pointless

and it's the end of the world because that death feels unfair,it's not like i went to the boss, put a nice fight and then died, nope, the boss busted one attack and the whole party was dead, even under the princess buff AND guarding, what the heck i'm supposed to do? pray to some atlus god? and that's really just one of the many frustation i have with etrian odyssey in general, for example i spent point in that multiple attack skills of the gladiator but as you upgrade the skills, the MP cost becomes more proibitive and the chance of it missing becomes bigger... why the heck a skill get worse the more effort i put into it? but ehy the game tells you about that right? sure that's why i was using the ranger skills that make attack more precise, but the end result still sucks and now i'm stuck with 2 pointless skills
there's being hard and there's being obtuse, etrian odyssey is the later

I'm a pretty big supporter of indie games but think a lot of them are less accomplished than the games that inspired them, and I don't find the artfag indie stuff terribly interesting from a design or gameplay standpoint. The artfag stuff is the stuff that usually gets all the praise on them... you'll see people blow their load over mechanically bland stuff like Fez and Limbo, but you won't hear anything about Orbitron Revolution, Protect-Me Knight, Apple Jack, or Shoot 1UP - indie games with solid gameplay but no pretentious postmodern hipster bullshit thrown in to look cool.

I don't know what to tell you, magoose.  If you got taken out by his first attack and you were under Guard Order and blocking, I have no earthly idea how you even *got* to him.  He was taking out about 60% of my guys HP with that attack and I not only didn't spend time grinding, I actually had rested three of my guys, so I was kind of underleveled.  There are like a million different ways to break EO3, all you have to do is find one, haha.

But sure, you're going to die sometimes.  Particularly if your party isn't set up with diverse strengths, you can run into trouble with FOEs and bosses.  You'll get game overs sometimes.  You'll lose progress sometimes.  That's called "challenge", man.  It's what makes the games worth playing.  How you can sit through 50 hours of horseshit for Star Ocean 4 but grouse about a five minute walk in EO3 is beyond me.

i had a lot of trouble with the previous boss too (the 2 ancient guys, the one that is one physical while the other cast magic) in fact i rage quitted at first at those two, picked the game some times after, beated those 2 guys and then got annoyed by it once again,i don't think the game is challenging,it just like to have random bout of meaningness and difficulty spikes and other various annoyance, which is what i hate in other atlus game too (like take persona 3... see mudo on MC,exploding enemies, that stupid miniboss that charm your companion and heal himself full, that other stupid miniboss which deals a bajillion "sword" damage so it's impossible to fight under normal condition but is easier than a normal fight when you become immune to "sword" damage)

that is why i enjoyed strange journey so much,it had all the good bits of etrian odyssey but none of the bullshit that plague atlus game,it felt fair and that's how i can go trough a lame rpg like star ocean 4 and complain about dying in EO3

i also have a burning hatred for class system and skills tree cause in the end it feels like i've always got the short end of the stick and that's another thing that make the game frustating, like i know that if i'm giving another chance at the game i'm 100% rolling a new party without the binding class, cause they nerfed them, hard!

uh anyway i'm sorry if i'm turning bebpo gaming rant thread into my own atlus rant thread so carry on with the other rants people

The last 4 years have been really boring for sfags because it was obvious that Sony is never gonna make a comeback.

I stopped paying attention to game "journalism" when they all of a sudden started to deride Japanese games to circle-jerk over the latest "indie cred" shitheap or bland "cinematic" "AAA" title.

One of the nice things about being primarily a retrogamer is I have a 30 year library of games to keep me busy, so I don't have to constantly wait with baited breath for updates.

don't hate on indie >|

There's a lot of retro styled indie titles to enjoy.

Well I like the "postmdern hipster bullshit". At least in games like Limbo, that take a basic mechanic and use it to do a lot. I like the oldschool stuff too.
