Not necessarily, imo. You might miss out on some characterizations, but all some of my friends went into this movie with no prior knowledge of those lead ups, and had a blast.

should I watch Thor and Iron Man 2 and Norton Hulk and Captain America (Christ, so many superhero movies) before watching this?

The only ones you would probably need to watch is Thor since the villain ties into that film, and Captain America to a lesser extent since it's somewhat of a sequel to that film as well. The others you can skip.

I didn't watch Captain America :lol

But yeah, Thor is probably the *only* one you might wanna check out, for the sake of Loki. The 5 seconds where Chris Hemsworth wears a jeans will make it worth it.

What is The Avengers, an expansion pack? Go see it if you want, or don't. Thor and IM2 probably suck, I haven't seen them.

Thor is the only one with a substantial connection.

Iron Man 2 if you want to learn more about the SHIELD characters (Samuel L Jackson, Scarlett Johanson, Clark Gregg).  It's on Netflix instant if you care enough.  You could skip most of the movie and just watch the SHIELD bits.

Captain America, maybe? If you know the basic story, then from the movie there's
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Hydra were Nazi, Tony Stark's dad was a character in it, and the macguffin from it is the macguffin in Avengers.

Norton's Hulk has no connection.  The one connection was retconned out.

There, now you're ready to see Avengers.

don't know if it's even worth spoiler tagging, but

spoiler (click to show/hide)
post-credit scene of Norton's Hulk has Tony Stark meeting General Ross in a bar, mentioning that he'll help with the "Hulk problem," or something along those lines.  Presumably an early idea was to have Hulk as more of an antagonist or something.  This was all back in 2008 when the only Avengers business was the post-credit scene from Iron Man.

When actual plans were forming that didn't align with earlier ideas, they made this short clip called The Consultant with Coulson explaining: "oh, Tony wasn't serious.  Secretly Ross wanted Abomination in The Avengers, and we didn't want that, so we sent Tony in to annoy him ( ???) into dropping that idea."

Also, originally The Hulk was responsible for finding Captain America.  Banner went to kill himself on a glacier and hulked out, smashing it, revealing Captain's body.

If you have to and i would recommend it. Watch Captain America and Thor the only two films with a real connection to events in The Avengers.

IM2 is a waste of time and the Hulk films are an acquired taste. (I liked them but ADD audiences demand more smashing for their money) Plus the Avengers version of Banner is a lot more genial.

from what i recall not many others here liked it, but i thoroughly enjoyed captain america

i thought it was a good old-fashioned superhero movie, and liked the fact that they gave the "pre captain" steve rogers a decent amount of screen time

and i totally geeked out over a montage towards the middle, which to me was like all those kirby double page spreads come to life

I thought Captain America was fun. Nothing fantastic but it worked.

Gonna see Avengers next Friday night at the drive-in (double feature with John Carter), should be a blast.

My biggest problem with it was the same as the Green Lantern's: the action scenes sucked.

The action in CA was 'pedestrian' but it still beats that shitbucket of a movie Green Lantern into the ground. That film has no redeeming features at all. Such a shame for a great character we'll probably never see another one done properly.

Thor is my favorite Marvel Hero and Green Lantern is close to the bottom DC wise for me.

Just got back from seeing The Avengers, aka. the movie that's the worst Marvel film yet for the first 90 mins and then is pretty solid for 40 mins and then ends.

I'm a pretty big Whedon fan, so I'm not sure what went wrong here.  The directing was really poor for the bulk of it, the script was super cheesy and often lame, the story kind of sucked, and the acting was B-level all around except Ruffalo who was fucking AWESOME and Hemsworth was pretty good.  Then again the Firefly movie wasn't particularly good either.

It's weird coming from Cabin in the Woods Whedon where the script is really sharp, witty, and clever to Avengers Whedon where the script is really dumb, spelled out, and cheesy.  However when it kicks into COMIC BOOKS MODE in the last 40 mins, it feels like a comic book brought to life and is great.  But man, so much of the film was bad and boring.  You'd think a man like Whedon who is GREAT at doing ensemble pieces with characters cleverly playing off each other like Firefly and Dollhouse would be perfect! for an ensemble superhero film.  Again, I dunno how they botched it.  Guessing a big movie like this had a shitton of executive producer control which screwed with Whedon.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
When AGENT GUY dies I was like "noooo, not AGENT GUY"  :lol  and then when he goes "It's ok, for this plan to work they need someone to avenge!" I was rolling my eyes so hard they were falling out my head.  And then cuts to ALL THE SUPERHEROS ARE CHANGED AND BROUGHT TOGETHER BY DEATH OF AGENT GUY.  Wow, this is like fan fiction amateur bad eeek.

But in the end Hulk was awesome and they made him BEYOND-GOD-TIER like he is in the comic universe and it was really satisfying seeing him fuck up shit.

I dunno, the script was hilariously bad.  Like Loki would have all these scenes where he'd give his BAD GUY SPEECHES and they didn't even bother to give him any sense of intelligent logic.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Instead you get him saying the same 3 min speech over and over again "PEOPLE DON'T WANT TO BE FREE.  THEY REALLY WANT TO BE RULED.  HOW DO I KNOW THIS?  BECAUSE I AM PULLING IT FROM MY ASS"
[close]

I think if I turned off my brain everytime someone talked in this movie I'd like it a lot better.  Which is probably why I really enjoyed the last 40 mins!  It's so weird because I love Whedon dialogue!  But I think the script sucked here.
