THQ has announced the development of Saints Row: The Third – Enter The Dominatrix, a standalone expansion to the game for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 which adds super-powers.

The expansion takes up where the core game left off with alien warlord Zinyak prepping his armada for invasion. Zinyak has captured the leader of the Third Street Saints, imprisoning him in an “elaborate virtual reality simulation.”

This simulation program looks and feels like Steelport, “but it is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth. Here, you are a slave. Welcome to the Dominatrix.”

Righto. Don’t look for this to go down well with the Saints.

Upon release this fall it will run you $29.99.

In what was initially intended as an April Fool's prank, THQ has made Saints Row: The Third - Enter The Dominatrix a reality.

The "groundbreaking" standalone expansion pack to Volition's over-the-top open-world title is due for a release this fall. The DLC add-on, which will release on the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC, follows the direction of the game and adds the most requested gameplay features stemming from the Saints Row community - "freaking super powers."

"Faster than a speeding cyber jetbike, more powerful than a roided-out Luchadore, able to leap flying aircraft carriers in a single bound... That's the power you'll find inside the Dominatrix. Use it for good. Use it for evil. Use it for whatever you want. As always in Saints Row, it's up to you," said Danny Bilson, THQ's EVP of Core Game Production. "With a franchise with more than 11 million units shipped globally, it's incredibly gratifying to have the flexibility to give Saints Row fans the features they want most."

Enter the Dominatrix takes place after the events of Saints Row: The Third. "For centuries, alien warlord Zinyak has eyed Earth and its precious natural resources and females with a watchful eye. As he prepares an armada for invasion, he has only one worry: the Third Street Saints," said THQ on the expansion.

"Once a simple street gang from Stilwater, the Saints have evolved into a global empire, replete with bombastic TV advertising and tasteful consumer products, the kind of TV advertising and consumer products that would give any alien warlord pause. Clearly, the Saints are the biggest badasses on Earth."

To prepare for invasion, Zinyak captures the leader of the saints and traps him in the titular Dominatrix, a virtual reality version of Steelport. Like the simulation in The Matrix, it's designed to pacify the people hooked up to it. The Saints aren't so easily controlled, though.

More details and gameplay footage of Saints Row: The Third - Enter the Dominatrix will be unveiled during the summer.

yeah, I got the game for $20-some on the euro-THQ site that included the DLC.  Played the alien and clone ones, maybe around an hour of game time between them.  If I payed the $7 for each, I would've felt ripped off.

SR3 Off the Record is $30 and set in the same city.  That plus the DLC experience doesn't make this very appealing.

The first quote is shoddy writing.

The second quote makes more sense

I dislike this a lot. we've known about the mars crap since red faction: guerilla had shaundi in space, but I don't want third street saints fighting aliens, that sounds dumb. TOO DUMB. I just want to be a boss gansta leader who who takes over other gangs, no space shit.

Hey, I'm all for an expansion pack if they handle it right.

However if it's like the DLCs, and is just 15 hours of new missions in the same city with the same gameplay and nothing new besides some superpowers (which you already had in trouble with clones)....might get kind of boring.

It needs new places to explore, new properties to purchase, new character levels to gain, etc...

Also you shouldn't be allowed to use your SR3 character.  It's less fun when you're using your max level character who is invincibile to everything and has infinite ammo and all the best weapons because there's no sense of any progress.  I hope this Expansion restarts you to level 1.

In my case, I don't like it because it's unoriginal. How many games can we think of that is about an alien invasion threat? Countless. Saints Row is unique because it subverts the gangsta open world style tropes and storylines into something fresh and funny and unique. I guess that's why I'm not down for making it all about space crap, but I'm open for it if it's done well, because if SR3 showed us anything, they're great at handling satire towards any genre.

It doesn't sound like the expansion is "all about space crap" anyway- it's gonna be (virtual) Steelport with super powers.  Re-using the same city worked for Grand Theft Auto, so why not Saint's Row?

Actually, it worked 90% that way for Saints Row 2, so I don't know why anyone is surprised. Stillwater in SR2 added some islands, a mountain, and a college, but it was largely the same map.

The DLC missions were pretty meh on the whole, but I liked Gangstas in Space and the one mission in The Trouble With Clones where you got superpowers was awesome. It was worth $10.

Saints Row: The Third - Enter The Dominatrix will no longer be released as a standalone expansion, THQ has confirmed. Instead, it will be folded into a full Saints Row sequel due in 2013.

The move appears to be the first major decision made by Jason Rubin, the co-founder of Uncharted developer Naughty Dog who was appointed THQ president last month.

"When I looked at the Enter The Dominatrix expansion in production at Volition, I was blown away by the ideas and desire to expand the fiction of the franchise," Rubin said. "I asked the team what it could achieve given more time, more resources, and a broader scope for the project. We all agreed that we wanted to play that game.

"When it comes to Saints Row, it's clear our fans want bigger, better and even more over the top, and that's why Enter The Dominatrix will now be incorporated into a vastly expanded, fully fledged sequel, scheduled for calendar 2013."

Intriguingly, it seems a multiplayer component is in the works, with Rubin adding: "We believe the potential for this sequel is far greater as a full-priced, full-length, high-quality connected experience."

If they're just folding it into what would have been Saints Row 4, I don't really mind. It sounded like something they were going to stick into the gap between games anyway.

Especially if 4 takes the leap 2 did. I'm holding out for that hero.

I'm :hyper anyway for a fourth Saints Row game. One of the best uses of this generation easily.

It sounds like they're just taking the Enter the Dominatrix content and working it into Saint's Row 4. Which is probably just as well, because none of the SR3 DLC was really that good on it's own. I'd rather them have all their resources going into a full-fledged SR4.

I think they'll do something on the order of SR1 to SR2, in that it will be the same basic environment with enough geometry changes to support the new and varied gameplay. And we'll all buy it on day one anyway.

My only worry is THQ staying in business into 2013, which is by no means certain.

Vigil will be purchased by EA, Bethesda, or Activision to handle some new property, or even to continue Darksiders if THQ fire-sales its IP. The worry is if THQ jettisons a mess of staff after completion of Darksiders II, but before putting the studio and/or IP up for sale.

Yuke's is independent, its stock isn't doing any worse than many other stock-offering Japanese companies, and they're diversified. Other Japanese companies also enjoy working with Yuke's because they deliver on-time, if not massively AAA titles. I'd be surprised if this was more than a speedbump, in the long term.
