"Beastie Boys" rapper MCA -- real name Adam Yauch -- has died.

In 2009, MCA announced he was being treated for a cancerous parotid gland and a lymph node. He has since undergone surgery and radiation therapy.

So far, it's not clear if the death is related to the rapper's battle with cancer.

Russell Simmons' website GlobalGrind.com first reported the death. We have spoken to people independently connected to the rapper who also say he is dead.

Yauch co-founded Beastie Boys in 1979 with Mike D, Mix Master Mike, and Ad Roc. The group has won multiple Grammys.

Yauch became a vegan at the recommendation of his Tibetan doctors.

Yauch is survived by his wife and daughter. He was 47.

Check Your Head was one of my favorite albums of all time simply because by this time they were considered a joke by most mainstream people (Despite Paul's Boutique being great and nobody buying it) and it put them back on the map with the most innovative rap album of that time.

$:-\$ Not a huge Beasties collector myself, but this sucks. Really liked Yauch's docu Gunnin' For That #1 Spot as well, will have to watch this again now. Especially the bonus clips of him playing one on one with Michael Beasley

Man, definitely one of my favorite bands. They had multiple music videos that I would watch all the time back in school.

Intergalactic is such a nostalgic song for me.

You know what was so great about them? They were just really fun to listen to. Music takes itself waaaay to serious these days.

You could listen to the Beastie Boys and just enjoy yourself.

someone brought the tape to a summer camp i attended (when i was 11, i think) and it spread like wildfire. Me and some friends acted out Paul Revere that year for a talent competition. Another totally separate group acted out Girls complete with boys and balloon bosoms.

i have spent a ridiculous amount of money on Beastie Boys music over the years.

I can't think of another group I've liked for longer than the Beastie Boys. First heard Licensed to Ill when I was in like 4th grade, and I promptly turned into a budding juvenile delinquent. Check Your Head was I believe freshman year of high school? I'm reasonably sure the first time I ever saw/played with a girl's boobies that album was playing.
