DayZ - Arma II Zombie mod.
« on: May 07, 2012, 04:08:15 AM »
So this seems to have taken off like nothing I've seen before except Counter Strike, DotA and Minecraft. You guys playing? I might give it a go later.

It wasn't ready when I went to check now, a friend at work has it and was going to set it up so we can play. I do agree though, not paying $29.99 to play a pre alpha mod

The videos I've seen of this make it out to be both amazing and terribly unpolished. I'd love to play this once the #1 cause of death isn't Video Game Ladders.

i've put about 4 hours into it. starting to get an idea of how to survive.

i dunno if i like the way the night time is presented. the colors look really fucked up like the color depth is 16bit or something.

would like to play with a bunch of people though.

I've been reading about this for the past few days.  Will try it out when I have the time, but it mostly sounds incredible.  It's very nearly a dream game of mine.

Outside of general bugs and jankery, the main issue seems to be the lack of a melee option.  It's built into ARMA2 so that would be a problem, but as it is you're stuck with guns and ammo.  There's talk of making it a stand alone project and that's pretty exciting.  And while they'll stick with zombies, because zombies, a STALKER version with anomalies and mutants patrolling the world would be perfect.

For what is essentially a pre-to-early alpha this mod has gained a fuck ton of traction. I sold my co-workers on this so easily as well, it's like this is just something we've been waiting for forever.

there's def a HUGE STALKER vibe when playing it.

so Momo, does night-time look really odd to you as well? like i said, almost as if the color depth is 16bit. i also noticed that the color hue would shift between blue/green/purple. it seems like a glitch but i dunno.

Every video I have seen has that 16bit weird colour at night. I havent played yet, we never got to setup Arma today sadly.

had no problems installing it. there's a video on youtube that walks you through. it's literally just two folders, extracting some files inside, and setting a launch switch. pretty simple.

this is crazy buggy, but worth dealing with all the problems.  for some reason everything I typed was backwards.  at one point I was in a small building and the door opened and I freaked out typing "YLDNEIRF TIAW TIAW"

the servers all seem real time, meaning everything now is nighttime, meaning you can't see shit.

ArmA2 is now on the 3rd place in the Steam top ten list.

i see DayZ becoming it's own product pretty soon like Red Orchestra.

yeah, it'll definitely be its own thing eventually.  can't remember the last mod that grew this fast.  maybe garry's mod.  I bought ARMA2 for Dayz and ARMA2.  I'm sure more will jump in for a standalone product if they just want Dayz.  iirc you could play the free version of ARMA2 and just buy the expansion pack for $16 to $20 (cheaper on BI's site), but it has the lowest quality textures and more bugs.  I just went for the full package.

looking at that map, I think started near Nizhnoye.  I climbed his big crane and lit a flare to see if it would attract anyone.  Then I walked towards Solnichniy, because I found a compass showing I was heading south.  I died somewhere south of there.  Again, playing at night for the first time is rough.  It's not Tomb of the Giants dark, but the only way I could tell zombies apart from any other object was their silhouette against the sky.

So I've been tempted to buy Arma II off steam for DayZ but I can't figure out what exactly you're supposed to be doing in it.  Is there a goal besides just surviving as long as you can?  I'd probably be more willing to drop 30 bucks on the thing if you're trying to do something besides shooting dudes in the face.

yeah, it's pretty much about survival.

It’s the interactions with other players that make it more compelling than just exploring, avoiding zombies, and finding supplies.  Some players will try to kill you for your supplies.  Others want to join up and travel together (or join up to kill other players).  You worry about killing zombies because your gunshots could attract players, and more zombies, or lighting a flare for similar reasons.  There's a humanity system where killing players turns you into a bandit (there's a window where you can fight back once attacked without lowering your humanity).  Saving other players by healing them and whatnot increases your humanity.  Players can break bones, lose blood, starve, etc.

You start with a puny pistol, some food, water, and a few flares.  You find can files tools like a compass to help guide you to other locations on the map, which you have to find too.  You can find vehicles, including helicopters, and better weapons around the world.  The main thing you do is survive.  There's no real end goal, yet.  This is still a really early mod.  I'm not sure what the overall ambition is for it.  It's really, really rough in its current state.

This sounds cool.  How many players are in the world that you are playing?  Is it like 32-64 player game?  Or is it like an MMO where everyone in the world is in the same game together?

Okay this seems pretty cool. My problem is that I can't remember for the life of me what the ARMA controls are AND half those controls don't work in this mod anyway (there are a shitload of them). most servers are 50 people and it's everyone for themselves. people can group up naturally if they want.

my last session i found a dude AFK in a lighthouse so i shot him in the head and took his stuff. it instantly turned me into a bandit. so then i was making my way to Electro when i found a dude with a rifle scoping out a gas station. i fucking solid snake'd my way up to him and popped one in his brain. took his rifle. then i booked my way over to Electro.

there i almost immediately found another survivor. i dont think he realized what the bandit skin meant so i killed him and took all his pistol ammo. from here i pretty much just ran around electro. with the rifle nothing really could touch me. i finally was about to make my way out when another dude started shooting at me. i was able to quickly turn and shot him once, killing him, but not fast enough before taking a nasty wound.

i was pretty fucked up, constantly falling down and low on blood. all color was gone and it got really blurry. so i started shooting into the air and challenged anyone to come at me. ELECTRO. DOCKS. LETS DO THIS.

sadly the group that was trying to get there didn't make it in time before i got attacked by a bunch of zombz. i ran out of ammo and died.

g'damn that was fun.

also: 3rd person is much better.

I can only play at night, when all servers are pitch dark.   I really want to play on a daytime server on the weekend.

Okay this seems pretty cool. My problem is that I can't remember for the life of me what the ARMA controls are AND half those controls don't work in this mod anyway (there are a shitload of them). My Google Fu is weak because I can't seem to find a quick start guide with a list of keyboard commands  :-\

The control input scene gets so nuts I didn't bother changing anything.  Like: Pressing down is iron sight, holding down is zoom, you can hold down while in iron sights, you can press alt for free look without moving your aiming reticule -or- double tap alt to lock free look -or- use the numberpad to look around relative to your character assuming your character is '5'.  While in free look hitting right mouse button (not holding) locks your movement to those 30 or 40 degrees where you were aiming.  If you've double tapped alt by accident, you won't be able to turn; you'll press forward to run forward but move left because you're looking right.  Interactive with objects is on the scroll wheel.  Think it works by looking at an object and moving the scroll wheel? guess again! if you're in a building and scroll to open a door, you'll start climbing a ladder outside that building.  One of these keys is a salute button and forward slash is chat.  Which chat? side chat.  There are half a dozen chats.  Switch between chat channels with period and comma.  Want to change weapons? pressing F switches between a gun and throwing weapon.  Pressing middle mouse button and scrolling to the weapon name switches guns.  What does rearm do.  Plus on the number pad zooms in.  Plus/Equal on the number bar fast forwards time.  Enter on the number pad is third person; Enter/Return doesn't.  What does rearm do.

The server I was on had bandits (I think) flying around in a helicopter.  I kept seeing it in the sky and one time heard it taking off near, then someone shot at me with a sniper rifle so I ran away.  Instead of sticking to the coast I just went straight into the forest and it's literally pitch black.  Came out near Prigorodky, wanted to go to Cherno, but had no idea where west was.  Ended up stumbling back to the shore and used that as a reference to get me to Cherno.  Found one friendly guy setting up flares and we walked around a bit.  Then some random guy shot us both  :'(

big picture that shows off how dark the forest is

It sounds like a very cool experience.  But I dunno if I want to drop $30 since I don't play online games really and I'd probably just try it a few times.  Fingers crossed that the mod is still alive next steam sale.  At $15 or something, I'm in.

It strikes me it would be really hard to team up because you don't control where you spawn and it's hard to figure out where you are at first. How long does it take to move from one side of the map to the other?

When I get the expansion you guys want to group up? I'm only interested in being a scumbag though!

Does the game have built-in voice chat or do you need Vent or Mumble?

there's built in chat but i think its just global or direct which is people around you. better to use something 3rd party for grouping.

let me know when you want to play. you, linkzeldagannon and i can go around being dicks.

sucks to hear you're having so much trouble getting the game to work. hopefully you can get a refund from steam and get it all on steam.

i had a pretty good sessions tonight. my first ended fairly quick when i got killed in a town near the coast.

my second session was great. i explored several villages. found a bunch of stuff. got a Lee Enfield rifle and a bunch of ammo for it. i made my way to Stary Sobo and met up with two guys there. it was funny because i climbed up on this barn structure and was sneaking along the catwalks when all of a sudden i turned and saw a guy prone on one side aiming his gun at me. i freaked and started backing away and typed "friendly!!" as quick as I could. apparently i startled him too because he had just turned and thought i was sneaking up on him. we spent some time raiding the town for supplies. the server started lagging so i backed out and got back in. by the time i did they had left. but then another dude showed up. he and i raided a military camp and i found an AKM and a lot of ammo. that was pretty awesome.

so now im logged off in a forested area near the town.

ive already put 12+ hours into this game. loving it. if they keep updating and improving this, this could be a huge contender for GOTY.
