Okay I've been watching a lot of Dragonball Z (lolz) and I'd be keen to watch some other anime show.

I'm quite interested in the look of Gundam and 80's style anime drawing. Is there an awesome 80's Gundam serial show someone can recommend? Is Area 88 good?

I second the Zeta Gundam recommendation. It's fucking terrible and genius at the same time. Epic war drama written and directed by a schizophrenic person. So entertaining. The mech designs are straight out awesome too.

Gundam? It meets the bolded requirements but it's semi-hard sci-fi and can have anime stuff.

For fantasy you could watch Record of the Lodoss War, but it's not going to meet all those requirements. It's like Fire Emblem but more mature.

The Vision of Escaflowne is really good fantasy like you want, but it's got a tooooon of animu. It has the original catgirl.

If you want something like Song of Ice & Fire but not as good and just as unfinished you could watch 12 Kingdoms.

Actually Berserk meets all those but it's the opposite of "no one is safe" because everyone who isn't the main cast always dies and the main cast is always safe.

It's quite awesome. Unfortunately it's an unfinished mess in the current state with no clue whether the author will finish the story before he dies as he's too busy playing Idolmaster and enjoying his lolis.

The anime is self-contained though, it's the first major arc of the story. If you like it you can jump directly into the comic from the ending as there's been several more large arcs since.

I was kind of bummed at the set up though. They tell her if she spills wine, she has to lick it up. When she spilled wine it looked like she spilled it in one of the dude's crotches. But instead they were like "oh you spilled it on the table, lick it up trollolol." I was kind of hoping...well nevermind $:-\$

First ep of Berserk was alright. Kind of throws you into the story with no explanation of what's what or who's who, but I'd imagine later eps will fill me in.
