MINECRAFT, sub-HD 360 version
« on: May 10, 2012, 11:15:19 AM »
Anyone buy this?  Is there any reason to do so if you already own—and don't play—the PC version?

Wait, it's not HD on 360? Minecraft doesn't seem like the most stressful of games to get running...

Wasn't interested on PC. Not interested on 360. Although it should do pretty well as those mine-craft clones on the indie section sell very well.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if it broke the one-day record set by Trials just a few weeks ago.  Wouldn't be a bit surprised if it broke the rest of the sales records, either.

I was gonna be all over this if I could afford it. Tried Minecrafting on my Macintosh but the inferior hardware couldn't  render the awesome graphics.

If only XBL marketplace allowed other users to donate MSP....

I don't know. Using friend's list as anecdotal evidence is always sketchy but my friends list was full of Trials the first day it launched. Minecraft had a decent number but not nearly the way it was with Trials. I have a pretty decent mix of hardcore and casual types and its full at 99 so I'm often surprised by how close it relates to game popularity/sales.

Not that I don't think Minecraft will do well in the long run. I think its more of a word of mouth get your friends to buy it and play with them kind of thing. The fact that its $20 while all the clones are like a couple of bucks hurts it a little too.

I bought it and I already own a version of it on PC......an old pirated version.  In fact the 360 game is a newer version than the one on my PC.

Seems alright for the time that I've spent with it and if it's not true 720p then I certainly haven't noticed.  It's not like Minecraft is much to look at anyway.

Heard the worlds are small but I haven't ran into any issues yet but I mostly just build stuff in Minecraft.  Don't really bother with the "exploring" part.

For MS I'm surprised most of these weren't part of their summer line-up which is generally their most promoted and heavy sales lineup. Fez, Minecraft, and Trials all sold well. It's hard to imagine the summer stuff selling better than these.

trolling aside, I agree Stoney. That was the big ticket downloadable line-up, what could be in store for summer of arcade? Recent trends have told me if a game isn't promoted several months before release, it will tank.

I agree.  All those titles have been promoted and were known to be coming for a long time.

I could see maybe Tony Hawk being a summer of arcade title since its been known for awhile and is a pretty big ticket item for XBLA. Hybrid might make it too, and while I'm very interested in it, I'm not sure most people have ever even heard of it. I would love a stealth Shadow Complex 2 drop but that seems unlikely. There will be at least one Kinect horeshit style summer of Xbla title most likely also.

I just looked at the leaderboards and there are over 400,000 people playing…so that will give you an idea at how well it is doing.

Earlier today, creator Markus 'Notch' Persson revealed via his Twitter feed that the console version of his game was profitable within an hour of going on sale.

However, his Tweet then set off a little consternation at Fez developer Polytron, who suggested Notch might have been singled out for preferential treatment by Microsoft.

"How did you get those stats from MS?" asked Phil Fish's crew. "We still don't know exactly how much Fez sold almost a month later. You get stats in 24 hours?

Notch replied: "What? Really? I thought it was standard procedure! That sucks. :( "

The Fez studio then stated that "standard procure [sic] is: you find out how much you sold when you get your first check 3-4 months later."
"You're also getting free updates," they added, "which is something every other developer on the platform is told is simply not an option."

Notch responded by explaining that "we had to fight for that, and we got a limited number of them. Not sure why they don't like it."

artsy fartsy games or games that allow gamers to create artsy fartsy things = same shit

I like the survival aspect of Minecraft the most. I find having to survive by crafting your way from the hordes of the night to be endearing and really refreshing. I treat Minecraft like a survival "sim" almost. It has an element of survival that modern survival horror games are lacking.

Seriously? Enemies spawn in dark places, especially caves. You have to venture out to get better supplies, so you'll have to encounter monsters. Not to mention, your swords, shields, and tools will eventually break, and you'll have to craft some new ones, sometimes in the middle of a monster raid. Going deep into caves, REAL deep caves always reveals monsters that are trying their hardest to kill you as caves are dark places, especially since things like torches are not infinite.

On one level like I always say as long as people get enjoyment out of something on an individual level that's all that matters. And enough people like minecraft that I don't dismiss or attack the game because clearly it is giving a lot of enjoyment to a good number of people.

For me personally there is just not enough game there. I don't mind certain free form experiences. The Sims, Civilization, Sim City, etc all provide a sort of sandbox experience of creation and such but to me those are still designed games. Even the free form modes have pretty good design intent in them. For my specific gaming tastes Minecraft doesn't have that. I do like the survival element. I think that's immersive to me and the closest the experience actually comes to feeling like a game rather than just a toolbox. I would be interested in an experience that had that survival element to it but was more designed. Like maybe that thing Epic is working on.

torches don't burn out i don't think, it's more like, you aren't going to find much wood inside a cave full of gravel and stone. so naturally you're going to run out of supplies some time.

What I've always enjoyed most about Minecraft is how downright freaky it can be, and I don't think it gets enough credit for its haunting atmosphere and the real sense of isolation it creates when you're tunneling miles below the surface.  It's among the "scariest" games I've ever played, really.

yeah it's a bizarre blend of being soothing and relaxing when you are wandering around outside during the day, then terrifying when you're a mile underground and being stalked by zombies and skeletons.

Because the enemies are such a major threat makes them way scarier too
