RIP Chuck Brown founder of Go Go Funk

I don't expect many to recognize the name or the guy but he was one of the dudes who popularized Go Go which was a Washington DC based sub-genre of funk that people thought in the 80's would take off but never really did. The biggest crossover hit in the genre was probably Experience Unlimited's "Da Butt"

Trouble Funk was/is my favorite go go band but Chuck's Brown's Bustin Loose album is good shit.

GoGo is amazing.  I love that new beat stuff like Mambo Sauce and the really synth heavy stuff the kids were making before I left.


It is kind of annoying to see NYC based music blogs who didn't write word fucking one about him when he was alive suddenly devote coverage to him when he died.

I don't really know much about Go-Go apart from hearing it in passing mentions... is it kinda similar to Miami Bass and Baltimore Breaks?

it is in that it's a regional black music, but stylistically it's totally different for the most part.  It can get kind of synthy (there was a weird year or two where everyone discovered Hoover stabs) but it's characterized by predominately organic analog instruments that you find in Afro-Cuban style sounds

Go Go can vary like anything. As someone who came to it fairly late, at first I didn't notice anything at all different about it than regular funk. But it has some noticeable difference. You hear congas a good deal more than you would with typical funk stuff. There is a sort of latin influence a bit in the music. There is often a sort of low-fi old school rap thing going on. Call and response makes up a part of it.

Like I said Trouble Funk is my favorite group although go go can sound very different from them especially the modern stuff.
