My son is right at that age where he likes to hear stories and have things read to him. I found a Shel Silverstein poetry book and brought it home. He loves it, but I'm looking for more material that is actually a story. I'm trying to find stuff that doesn't have pictures, because he's already got a ton of picture books.

Does the Bore have any suggestions for books to read to him, books your parents read to you, or favorite books from you childhood?

Hardy Boys and The Three Investigators were my bread and butter back when I was a little guy. These days, I dunno, the kids seem to like Captain Underpants.

That was my wife's favorite when she was a little girl. We still have her copy. It is a very heart-tugging book.

He's 4 going on 5.

All these are picture books, but The Moomins are mainly text.

The Neverending Story is great - way better than the movie (which is good but yeah).
The Hobbit, naturally.
The Prydain books.
Last three I guess are for older kids, a little.

I can only recall a handful of books that I really loved to death.

Anything by Lloyd Alexander, which used to drive me crazy looking him up in the library. It was hard for me to grasp that someone may have a last name which could also be a first name. I always thought he should have been named Alexander Lloyd. But his Celtic based fantasy books were amazing to me.

John Bellaires. These books set me on a course to loving horror. They're scary gothic books for kids. They may be a bit too intense for your young one now.

Hank The Cowdog. I spent a huge chunk of my childhood in Texas and these were absolutely hilarious. It's even funnier if you start to think of George W Bush as Hank.

I remember having one of those Accelerated Reader programs at my elementary school. I started reading the Boxcar Children books and had the most points of any kid in my grade. When I finished the series I just quit reading all-together for a while. LOL

I picked up the first six in a boxset a few months ago and they're still as great as ever.

The other main author, Edward Packard (who I think many would say wrote slightly better stories), has started doing books again in digital form. I'm not so interested in digital, but I think print versions are coming too according to his site. http://www.edwardpackard.com/. You could always pick up the original books second-hand.

basicaly it describes the fauna of an imaginary land called "strangeland" that feature animal such as a parrot-cat hybrid

a lion architect and a mouse that makes a poop 10 times it's size

the island also features the most racist indigenous ever
