TBH I started watching this cause I thought Idris Elba looked like a boss and I recently started browsing this shit hole again and Himu is trying to be cute by calling himself Stringer Bell.

I dunno I watch anime mostly these days but I like this show. I'm not into detective shows or whatever and shows like CSI piss me off with their nonsense needless to say this show is nothing like it. I'm only in a few eps and it's incredibly memorable. Almost every scene seems to be meaningful. It's pretty awesome. I've read some stuff about people calling this the best show of all time but the show is good, but not "I can't believe my eyes" good, you know? There's no reason why other shows can't be this good... it's kinda sad...

Avon gonna get got, yo

I'm on season 2.

It's definitely better than the Sopranos which gets/got a lot more praise.

Not really. Sopranos got an tremendous amount of praise, but The Wire now wins most "best Tv Show of the last 20 years" rankings. Maybe it was talked about more by the media/public, but that's understandable given it's higher ratings and that it was the show that started this thing of high quality tv dramas.

Why are you comparing it to lesser shows? It's not a good season, period; that's not to say it's bad. It has some great moments but ultimately is way too heavy handed.

IMO:

1. The Wire
2. The Shield
3 The Sopranos

depends on the sub plot.

the fake killer sub plot was bad, and the newspaper angle was wasted potential

That plot felt like Simon directly preaching to the audience. I get the point, I agree with the point, but it was just handled so poorly I couldn't take it seriously.

And I've been going through The Wire again, I still really, really like Season 2 but it may be due to the change in venue. Just started Season 4 which I remember I didn't like as much the first time but for some reason I'm really curious about Marlo this time around so I think I'll appreciate the season even more.

Also The Shield is fantastic. They somehow maintain a sense of tension throughout the whole run of the show.

The Shield is very consistent for a show that lasted seven years. I remember enjoying each season (I've only seen them once). S5 is one of the best seasons of anything ever, and it has the best final season/finale

That's the thing: consistency. Basically the Wire felt like it ran out of creative steam in the last season, an awful lot of it just felt flat. Whereas The Shield opened strong, and finished strong. There's also an f-bong dropped by Shane when he fights the Armenian foot-chopping Jesus guy, but they left it in for some reason. Also Forest Whitaker was on some serious superbolic acting juice.

Yeah more stuff sticks with The Shield. We can at least all agree on that, thank god.

The Wire is ok. its not the greatest thing ever like people treat it, and The Shield is WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY better. But The Wire is good. I think in the echelons of best tv ever it goes:

1. The Shield
2. Twin Peaks Season 1
3. Larry Sanders Show
4. The Wire
5. Parks & Rec

Dunno about that argument Mr. Raperman, the first four seasons of The Wire are basically amazing television; the third and fourth seasons may be the best of anything I've seen. The fifth is meh, but doesn't mar the series; at least the finale episode was very good. So in that sense it's an incredibly consistent series.

I need to watch The Shield again. It just doesn't compare to The Wire's writing, but then again nothing does

You and PD must have thought I was talking about the Wire when I was referencing OZ going off the rails. Probably my fault. Anyway The Wire maintained a good series throughout. Just sayin' OZ has a lot of overlap with actors and writers.

the wire definitely has the best dialogue, but the shield is a better DRAMA. the wire never hits the crazy high notes the shield does, but the shield never gives you much to think about. the shield knows it's TELEVISION first and foremost and makes an art out of that; the wire considers itself art (not in a pretentious way), and makes tv out of that.

the wire makes you go HMMM; the shield makes you go WHAT THE FUCK. it depends on what you're in the mood for.

You have good taste. I haven't seen twin peaks but otherwise I agree with the list. The Shield was a better written and more consistent show. It felt like it just got better and better every season while The Wire got more mellow and just transformed into a soap box in the last season.

It went off the rails in later seasons but any of you who haven't seen OZ really need to.

I watched all of Oz in like 10 days, like 5-6 episodes a day. The show is very engrossing but weird and depressing as fuck.

ty for the compliment :). i like lots of tv shows, and that list was excluding some of my favorite british tv shows like JAAAMM but I figured i'd just list shows most people have a idea of.

also I didn't think Sopranos didn't get bad until THAT episode, the one where they lose the guy in the woods. from that episode on it went to shit.

I like The Shield more than the Wire and this is confirmed after multiple viewings of both.

Not that I think that The Wire is a bad show, on the contrary, it is excellent.  You can't go wrong with either one, really.

Good lord Devo you need to get on that. Twin Peaks has an overall tone that no show has ever achieved, for me at least. Drops off in the second season but gets awesome again 2/3rds in.

Wait what? The Wire hits some amazing high notes in every season except the last one, especially towards the end of seasons.

I can certainly think of some huge Oh Shit moments in The Shield, but I can only think of two (I'm sure anyone who has watched The Shield can guess one of them) that had enormous emotional resonance with me. Whereas The Wire has a multitude of those.

But like I said it's my second favorite show, so overall arguing The Wire v The Shield is sort of like asking who you want to bang: 70s Pam Grier or 70s Claudia Cardinale. You can't lose, just go balls deep and salute your excellent taste

Twin Peaks really nailed the feel of lurking terror with the saccharine and humoristic tone overtone. The music of the opening credits hits this tone perfectly.

s2 is amazing

Loved the sort of allegorical take on the working man having to steal what they couldn't make. You really feel for the dock workers, something I never felt with the East Side West Side stuff. The ending and how it all wraps up is damn amazing. Fucking Frank Sobotka man.

Season 2 is the peak of the series, which is a bit of a shame for something so spunked over by the gushing press that it looks like one of the dead blonde twins Reggie Fils Aime (which almost means I love young boys in French) keeps in his basement for 'playing changing nappies' with.
