In a move that will rock the next generation of console gaming, Sony is close to agreeing an acquisition of a high profile cloud gaming firm, MCV understands.

It was reported earlier this week that Sony was to reveal a partnership with a cloud gaming firm – specifically either OnLive or Gaikai – at E3 next week.

Subsequent chatter had seemingly calmed the rumours, suggesting that the proposed agreement was to do with Sony streaming TV services, and not consoles.

However, MCV understands that the deal is far more extensive than anyone could have predicted and will see Sony fully acquire one of the two firms. The deal, our source says, “is close to being signed”.

Sony's rumoured cloud gaming deal with Gaikai is to allow current-generation hardware to play PlayStation 2 and PSone games via a streaming solution, GamesIndustry International understands.

According to sources, the service will offer first-party games and be open to third-party publishers to sell back catalogue to players. The partnership is likely to be announced at E3 next week as part of Sony's conference on Monday.

my experience with onlive was pretty bad the first time i tried it, but my isp upgraded recently so i bought red faction armageddon and gave it another shot during that "buy any game for $1" facebook promo they had

it still wasn't optimal, but there was noticeably less pixelization and the input lag wasn't nearly as bad as it had been before, so the experience will likely get much better (but never perfect) over time

i guess this is about the best anyone who likes playing older console games and bc can hope for going forward, the alternatives are spotty hd remastered releases or nothing at all

i'd imagine there'll be a gakai app for vita at some point, and considering there would never have been any ps2 bc there to begin with, i guess that's...okay?

This thread on GAF is utterly hilarious I know it's "only" £18 dollars but Sony has played a blinder into getting people to buy PSN+ cards for a 'surprise'.
I'm happy to wait as surely Sony will want new buyers to have an incentive to buy in,if this news is actually any good.

This also lays the way imo for Sony's next gen machine. They must be itching to put online play behind that paywall. Next years E3 is going to something to see if they do it.

I wanted to say that PSN Plus has been a good value for me thus far, getting Infamous FoB at $5, other deals, "free" games and such.  But then I remembered that I got in on that Target deal when PSN cards were ~$15 instead of $50.  Unless there are big changes at E3 I don't think $50 is worth it.  Then again, I don't use cloud saving much* or those hour long trials.

*I would if it were a feature on the Vita, especially with how broken the Vita's save system is where deleting games also deletes your saves.  I'm guessing Sony will show off Plus and PS1 games on Vita and act like these weren't features that should've been there day one.

PSN Plus actually seems like a good deal.  It's just that with the scant gaming time that I have, it just isn't worth it financially.

It actually becomes a better deal the more hardware you own. If you own a PS3, PSP (or presumably a PS Vita after E3), then the handful of minis, PS1, and PS3 games you get each month can be shared amongst all of them.  Plus the discounts are usually pretty nice. I never would have bought inFamous 2 at $35, but with the extra PS+ discount I bit for $23.
